Appendicitis??

AMR123456 · 23/08/2016 16:58

My DD has abdominal pain 10 days ago(rolling around in pain) visit to walk in said her bowel sounded quite active & to expect vomiting as they thought it was a tummy bug. Pain settled later that day no vomiting.
Fast forward 8 days vomited 3 times bit of tummy ache.
Yesterday worsening pain moving to right side.
Today we've now had our 2nd visit to hospital(1st being last night) they admitted her for 6 hours today. Scan showed nothing but apparently wouldn't always with appendicitis. She's come home in worse pain than she went it but because they can't tell for sure they've sent us home again. Said I can observe her at home & bring her back if no better/worse.
Has anyone had similar experience?
I obviously don't want her to to have op unless it's necessary but just wondering how long they'll leave her like this until they do anything?

Any better this morning? Hope so

RonSwansonsBestFriend · 26/08/2016 18:32

Just checking in to see how today went?

AMR123456 · 26/08/2016 19:26

Hi thanks for asking after DD. we've been in all day. Bloods done not indicative of appendicitis. Waited 8hours for senior review who was going to discharge again despite hardly taking oral fluids & not eating for over 24hrs. Plus shed being vomitting this morning before going in. Said to come back Tuesday if still in pain!! I wasn't happy. Feel we've been really messed around TBH. This all started nearly 2 weeks ago.
They needed wee sample before she went.DD then vomited a moderate amount of bile so they said we'll observe for an hour see how she goes- cue lots of sick. So now staying in & for iv fluids.

Oh gosh, what on earth is it, if not appendicitis? Somebody needs to have s plan, you can't wait till Tuesday.

They must be pretty sure it's not appendicitis?

Thinking of you both, really hope you get a proper diagnosis and plan soon.

AMR123456 · 26/08/2016 19:55

Ron they were suggesting a stomach bug. It's a funny stomach bug then!! Yes they were expecting us to go home until tues. when we were discharged on weds it was on the understanding that if she was still poorly today they'd do something about it. They seem to keep moving the goalposts so to speak.

Just waiting for the "magic" cream to work so they can put cannula in so she can have iv fluids. No plan been made thus far

Oh poor lamb. This reminds me of the constipated dd thread, where the hospital kept saying go home.

I think you need to stand your ground. Difficult over the bank holiday, but there will be a consultant on call all weekend. Ask to speak to them and the nurse in charge to discuss before she's sent home again.

You're doing great-just keep plugging away at it Flowers

mummyof2kiddies · 26/08/2016 20:08

Docs bug me. Just god it's not classic presentation. When I was admitted with a do pain they said it wasn't my appendix as one of my blood tests wasn't high enough. Cue me waiting from Friday morning (ambulance to hospital from GP!) to bring rushed to theatre on Sunday night with an almost perforated appendix! They not always right, trust your instincts X

Sleepinghooty · 26/08/2016 20:13

Oh poor thing. I agree keep pushing. Why are they so sure not appendicitis?

AMR123456 · 26/08/2016 20:20

Thanks juliaI'm not going to stand for them sending her home until she stops vomiting & can drink enough to not be dehydrated.
mummyof2 they are saying not appendicitis because her bloods not high enough but clearly in your case that roves they don't always go up!!
Hooty did your DS bloods go high(inflammatory markers) when he had appendicitis?

OP posts:
SellFridges · 26/08/2016 20:20

I am not a child but I had suspected appendicitis recently. I had horrific pain, a slightly raised temperature and some slightly off blood work. They couldn't spot anything on an ultrasound and in the end just ruled out some other things and gave me IV antibiotics which improved my temperature and bloods and eventually the pain eased.

I was in hospital (and messed around but that's another story) for four days and felt much better a week later. I was told that they try not to take your appendix out now if you respond to antibiotics. Might be worth asking why they are not trying that approach?

Sleepinghooty · 26/08/2016 20:51

Nobody would even take his bloods as they said it wasn't appendicitis! Then it burst and levels were very high. Although a friends dc recently had appendix taken out ( was v swollen) and story v similar to you, no inflammatory markers and kept being sent away.

The be sick sounds v similar to ds though

AMR123456 · 26/08/2016 21:08

Sellfridges they're still saying it's not appendix. Glad you recovered

Hooty she's still being sick 3 hours after last time she's drunk anything. Still waiting for cannula I've just asked nurse to chase doctor as she's in pain but can't hold anything down.
I'm worried what happened you your DS is gonna happen here!!

RonSwansonsBestFriend · 26/08/2016 22:03

Poor little girl. How can it be gastroenteritis? I've never heard of vomiting for 2 weeks with a stomach bug? I am prepared to be corrected as I hope that your DD just has that and nothing more but I find it bizarre that this has been suggested.Blush

I think you need to keep being insistent and ask for a 2nd or 3rd opinion, you know your child.

Thinking of you.

AMR123456 · 26/08/2016 22:57

Thanks Ron I'm quietly fuming. It's been over 4 since they said they'd start iv fluids. She's still vomiting & needs painkillers but can't hold anything down. The cannula was put in 2 hours ago. Still waiting for fluids painkillers & anti sickness meds to be prescribed!! FFS when they knew she needed all that why didn't they prescribe it hours ago. I'm fed up of asking!!

I went through something similar with DS 15 in May. Pain out of nowhere Monday evening. A&E Tuesday morning, straight to surgical ward. Bloods showed CRP (inflamation marker)normal. Sent home. back for review following day. Everything exactly the same, not eating or drinking, some vomiting, bloods still normal.Ultrasound scan. v detailed. took an hour, also normal, but kept in as his pain was increasing. Early hours Thursday morning after 2 doses of morphine, they put him on theatre list for appendicectomy. Op finally takes place at 11.30 pm Thursday night. Appendix normal. He was out of pain for about a week, has been in chronic pain since. Had an absolute barrage of tests, all normal. Been diagnosed with nerve pain, still ongoing. Sometimes despite everything, there is no simple solution. Sorry, I know this doesn't help you now, but I understand what you're both going through and how it feels

RonSwansonsBestFriend · 26/08/2016 23:26

I know it's frustrating but you just have to keep pestering, I understand that they're busy but she's really suffering.

Really hope you been sorted and she can sleep (do you have a bed too?)

AMR123456 · 27/08/2016 00:32

At last she has just had fluids put up -just as well as her blood pressure is now low. She's finally had some painkillers & meds to stop the sickness. Sleeping DD-yay!!Smile

OP posts:
RonSwansonsBestFriend · 27/08/2016 08:39

Your poor DD, what a rotten time for her. How was your night? Did she sleep?

How is the pain?

AMR123456 · 27/08/2016 10:31

Hi Ron. It was a pretty sleepless night. No more vomiting after anti sickness meds. But lots of observations as blood pressure was low. Docs have seen her. Asked how I'd feel about taking her home. You can imagine my response to that!!
They are saying they think it's a stomach bug. I'm puzzled how they came to that conclusion. She vomited last Sunday then no vomit until Thursday (just twice) then once yesterday morning. Then constantly last night until the anti sickness was given. And why would you get pain in a specific area with a stomach bug?

OP posts:
RonSwansonsBestFriend · 27/08/2016 11:30

How on earth can that be a stomach bug and why is she not getting better? I'm not a doc but I've never known a bug to present like this.

What do they say, that this is typical of bugs?

Sleepinghooty · 27/08/2016 16:58

just checking in again - did they make you take her home?

AMR123456 · 27/08/2016 20:26

We're still here
Further scan has shown enlarged lymph nodes which didn't show up on last scan. They were talking of discharge this morning but I expressed my concerns that she wasn't eating & drinking & I wanted to make sure she could at least keep fluids down for few hours before I was prepared to take her home. So another night to make sure she's fit to go tomorrow. She's drinking without vomitingSmile not much food really but that's ok as long as she hydrated & pain under control I'm more than happy to go home.
Thanks for all advice & support.

Keep at them AMR,
You know she's not well.

IMO, sending a child who's suffered for this long in pain home is not right,it seems to be a guess work non-diagnosis.

I've been through similar with my DD & I wish I'd pushed harder at the time instead of being fobbed off!

Don't get me wrong, the NHS is amazing when it works but sometimes you need keep asking, pushing & questioning.

If the symptoms & pain haven't changed since they admitted her then surely going home won't help ?

Hope they can make her more comfortable & find the problem ASAP.Flowers
