Appendicitis??

AMR123456 · 23/08/2016 16:58

My DD has abdominal pain 10 days ago(rolling around in pain) visit to walk in said her bowel sounded quite active & to expect vomiting as they thought it was a tummy bug. Pain settled later that day no vomiting.
Fast forward 8 days vomited 3 times bit of tummy ache.
Yesterday worsening pain moving to right side.
Today we've now had our 2nd visit to hospital(1st being last night) they admitted her for 6 hours today. Scan showed nothing but apparently wouldn't always with appendicitis. She's come home in worse pain than she went it but because they can't tell for sure they've sent us home again. Said I can observe her at home & bring her back if no better/worse.
Has anyone had similar experience?
I obviously don't want her to to have op unless it's necessary but just wondering how long they'll leave her like this until they do anything?

Terrible typing. It was an ovarian cyst.

AMR123456 · 24/08/2016 22:53

Thanks Julia on scan they couldn't see the appendix so wondering if it's tucked up somewhere hiding behind the bowel??
She knows I'm on her side she thanked me today for being a good mum -bless her. she's just getting distressed that basically nothing has been done In her eyes as she's still in pain.
If she can manage on painkillers until Friday I'll keep her at home. If she can't or she stops eating completely I'll go back sooner. She's had a few breadsticks & few bites of a muffin all day(usually eats like a horse!!)

Poor girl. Really hope she's ok.

Tell her she has a fan club on here, amazed at how brave she is being. Mine went on like this, I was an adult and I can tell you she is much braver than me!

Sounds like they are taking it seriously and going for the better option at the moment.

I do wish her better very soon. Hope you're ok too, must be very stressful Flowers

AMR123456 · 25/08/2016 10:06

Thanks Ron she is being brave
So this morning she's vomited & has a low grade temp. If vomiting carries on she'll have to go back today I think or pain will be worse with not keeping painkillers down.
She eaten 2 mini breadsticks. I'm not too concerned about the not eating. I'm just trying to make sure she doesn't get dehydrated.
I guess it's just wait and see at the moment X

What do they actually think it is, if not appendix?

AMR123456 · 25/08/2016 11:13

They don't know really. Said it could be a bug which i think is not likely as when she gets a bug she's a full on vomitter constantly until there's nothing more to come plus the initial onset of pain was now 12 days ago.
Also said they cannot completely rule out it being her appendix. But because she's not the classic presentation that's why they're not rushing to operate.
It's frustrating

I'll bet you're frustrated. Rock and a hard place though, isn't it? I understand their reticence to operate.

Poor thing, just dawned on me that's it's the summer hols. What a shame. When is she due back at school?

datingbarb · 25/08/2016 11:31

PLEASE PLEASE keep a careful eye on her.

When we were growing up my sister then 12 had a bad tummy (same symptoms as your dd for 2 weeks, despite lots of trips to doc etc they kept telling my mum is was tummy bug/growing pains etc . On day 14 my sister collapsed her appendix had actually turned septic and she had blood poisoning, she wasn't expected to pull through (thank god she did) she was very poorly and spent over a month in ICU and they had to cut her tummy right across and wasn't sole to stitch it because of the poison.

honestly I'm not trying to scare you this was 27 years ago but like you say scans ext don't always show up appendix, if you think it's something more than a tummy bug keep taking her back until they sort it

Mybugslife · 25/08/2016 11:39

I've been admitted to hospital with suspected appendicitis on more occasions than I care to remember, as a child and an adult. Whenever I get a bug (not necessarily sickness) the glands in my stomach swell so much that it causes symptoms of appendicitis. I've even been prepped for theatre twice and then not taken down.
Each time the hospital has been great (especially as a child) and I've never once been sent home. So it's unfair of them really to send a child in clear pain home.

I would defiantly say take her back in and make a fuss. Hope she feel better soon.

Ps. I'm in no way saying it's not appendicitis just giving another option on what it could potentially be. Obviously I'm not dr/hcp

You describe it perfectly Ron - rock & a hard place. I want her sorted but don't want her to have op unless definitely necessary
Yes school hols stuck either at home or in the hospital. She's back in 2 weeks so she needs sorting

AMR123456 · 25/08/2016 11:50

Jelly head crp was normal on Monday. If we go back I'll ask them to repeat them.
Dating barb that's exactly what I'm concerned may happen if they let it continue on much longer if it is her appendix.
Bugs how long do your episodes last for if you don't mind me asking?

Sounds a lot like symptoms ds had (and a few other children I know too) all turned out to be appendicitis. Ds was 3, so it was tricky to describe the symptoms but his burst and we were in hospital a while. Really hope it is resolved soon

Mybugslife · 25/08/2016 12:22

I've spent longer than a week in hospital, around 10-11 days but the pain starts before that and gradually gets worse, enough for pain killers not to touch it, which is when I usually get admitted.
It's not been as bad since having my tonsils out a few years ago (weirdly enough) but in my early teens it was really very bad.
I always got ''tummy ache'' whenever I was ill as a child and no one ever believed me until it go really bad.
There is a name for it but I can never remember. X

AMR123456 · 25/08/2016 12:25

Hooty how lond did your DS have pain for before it ruptured?

OP posts:
Mybugslife · 25/08/2016 12:25

I thinks it's best she gets checked out again though as appendicitis, as I'm sure you know can be very dangerous.

AMR123456 · 25/08/2016 12:26

Bug is it mesenteric adenitis?

Bug is it mesenteric adenitis?

OP posts:
Mybugslife · 25/08/2016 14:51

Yes I think it is.
This was partly why I had my tonsils removed as an adult (wish they'd done it sooner) as the infections I kept getting would cause my stomach to flare up X

AMR123456 · 25/08/2016 17:37

Bugs I am worried it could still be appendicitis as my mum was told when I was a child I had a "grumbling" appendix. This carried on for years then I was told it was mesenteric adenitis. Eventually in my early 20's I had my appendix out. No further problems.

Sleepinghooty · 25/08/2016 17:52

He only had pain that we knew about for 2 or 3 days actually. But he is very tough and rarely complains (and very young) So I suspect it may have been off and on for a few days before that.

Mybugslife · 25/08/2016 18:10

AMR which is why I've said to get her checked out again anyway.

RonSwansonsBestFriend · 25/08/2016 21:07

How is DD tonight, how's she been today?

AMR123456 · 25/08/2016 22:34

She's still sore, miserable & has vomited again this afternoon. My mil suggested it was in her head tonight AngryAngry
She's now asking for painkillers a couple of hours before it's due so I know she's in pain
Taking her back in the morning. If they say no surgery I'm fine with that if they are certain not her appendix. I'll be asking for referral to appropriate speciality (luckily DH in Bupa) for further care

GlitteryFluff · 25/08/2016 22:53

Oh your poor dd.
Hopefully she can get a bit of rest tonight before you head back to hospital tomorrow.
