Does this sound like a nice list for a 9yo?

Dd's has only just got into reading independently and for pleasure via the Enid Blytin Brer Rabbit stories. She like them because they make hard laugh, involve animals and are short enough for her to read at one sitting. She has now asked for a library for her birthday. I have been looking at threads on here and these seem likely to please.

My DD will only read animal stories!
Holly Webb has written lots, you can buy them in sets on Amazon.
Gill Lewis books are 10+
Jenny Oldfield Dolphin Island series
She does enjoy the Famous 5 too.

My 9 yo dd reads things like diary of a wimpy kid, dork diaries, tom gates, Harry Potter. However they are all very different from what you have listed so maybe ones to bear in mind for a year or so!

Sunnyshores - may I ask if those series of books are sad at all? She hates sad things. She only barely tolerated Charlotte's Webb.

Toomanycats - I think she would probably like to have those read to her as they sound funny, and yes - I am saving Harry Potter for later - I'm hoping they will encourage her to devour books the way I used to.

Worst witch - there's a series on CBBC too. Not wholly faithful to the plots but the characters work well.

Tbh she mostly reads on her own these days. I dont think they can be too sad, certainly not at the end, as she is fairly sensitive. I know she didnt like any of the Michael Morpurgo books she started as they were sad (ie War horse).

PS just remembered last summer she read a Roald Dahl boxset and loved them.

My DD is of a similar sensitive disposition. She has the Enid Blyton's Malory Towers and Famous Five boxsets which she loves. The Book People sell them cheaply so might be worth looking there if they deliver to where you are.

She also enjoyed Jacqueline Wilson's Hetty Feather series.

The World According to Humphrey and the rest of the series Betty G Birney were among dd's favourites.

Is Hetty Feather set in the olden days? She's quite keen on the olden days, you know, when I was young

If she likes Enid Blyton then the mallory towers series and the naughtiest girl series would be good. I enjoyed them when I was that age.

Those are quite young for a 9 year old.

Yes the Hetty Feather books are set in Victorian times.
Michael Morpurgo has lots of animal stories though some can be sad.

I loved The Adventures of a Little Wooden Horse! It made me weep buckets though!

Thanks again for the suggestions. She is a young 9. Brer Rabbit is the first book she has ever picked up and read without being asked, despite my best efforts. Something naive and naughty or funny is good.

I can't remember the exact title but it's about a rabbit and it's called the wondrous adventures of Edward Tulune or something similar. The adventurous life? It does have some parts that could make your daughter upset, for example there is a part where a girl is sick and dies and the dad is a bit abusive. A lot of teacher friends in the US have read it to their classes though, some have read it to second or third graders and they said their classes really loved it.

I don't think they sound too young for a 9 year old at all. I still enjoy reading similar to/ with my DC and I'm over 40.

DD (8) is very much into Malory Towers at the moment, having re-read the Naughtiest Girl series many times. I held off giving her Malory Towers until now. She now realises that there is the prospect of St Claire's ahead too.

My DS is almost 9 and we read, over and over and over and over again all of the Swallows and Amazons series, they are his absolute favourite books.

What about Judy Blume's Ramona series? I really loved those as a child.

Mrs Pepperpot is quiet young for 9... I'm reading them to my 5 year old! I know that this is a thread about independent reading, but I'd says Mrs P is quiet young stories too.

ALL the Michael Morpurgo are sad and spoiler alert quite often the animals die.
DS1 was traumatised.
What about the Animals of Farthing Wood?
