Does this sound like a nice list for a 9yo?

Dd's has only just got into reading independently and for pleasure via the Enid Blytin Brer Rabbit stories. She like them because they make hard laugh, involve animals and are short enough for her to read at one sitting. She has now asked for a library for her birthday. Smile I have been looking at threads on here and these seem likely to please.

Mrs Pepperpot
Ottoline and the Yellow Cat Chris Riddell
Clever Polly and the stupid wolf stories
The World's Worst Children - Walliams

What do you think. Any suggestions to add very welcome. We are not in an English speaking country so I can't just take her to the local library to see what she likes.

Many thanks.

Ah! Spies are good. She also wants spy gear.

I have been warned off Michael Morpurgo. DD wouldn't like the sadness and D's would be distraught if he got his hands in them. He can barely cope with me swatting flies.

Ok, so no Mrs Pepperpot.

I am very grateful. I'm making a big list.

My 9yo DD has just finished the snow spider by Jenny Nimmo and loved it x

halcyondays · 15/05/2017 22:15

I wouldn't rule out Mrs Pepperpot if she liked the Brer Rabbit stories. Quite similar in a way.

Did you have the Brer Rabbit 3 in 1 collection? If not there will be a couple of other Brer Rabbit books for her to read.

Other EB short stories such as Amelia Jane, Mr Pink-Whistle,Tales of Betsy May

Olga da Polga
Paddington
Dick King Smith animal stories

Mustang27 · 15/05/2017 22:17

@Astro55 oh my goodness the magic faraway tree was one of my favourites as a child. Going to buy this immediately my son is only 23 months though so I'm really just buying it for myself.

Op you really need to get this it's a wonderful book.

Mustang27 · 15/05/2017 22:18

Sorry op just saw that you have read it Blush got a bit carried away.

ButTheBearSnoredOn · 15/05/2017 22:27

That's funny as Mrs pepper pot and the Brer Rabbit stories were 2 of the only books I really disliked for some reason as a child!
My dd is 8 and has recently enjoyed:
Enid blyton school stories
The worst witch
Goth girl
Nixie the bad bad fairy
David Williams -the midnight gang, demon dentist etc

She will also still read the bloody awful 'magic animal friend' books (same sort of thing as the even more awful rAinbow fairy books)

2014newme · 15/05/2017 22:57

My 9 year olds like
Harry Potter
Classics like goodnight Mr Tom, the machine gunners, secret garden, what Katy did
Funny books like Tom gates, David Walliams
Jacqueline Wilson, read them all
Some mysteries like ruby redfort

lrb978 · 15/05/2017 23:09

Heidi
The Animal Ark series (be warned though, there are over 60 books in the series)

Beeziekn33ze · 15/05/2017 23:09

Goodnight Mr Tom has some very sad sections.
The Ms Wiz series by Terence Blacker are funny. Dick King Smith books, including The Hodgeheg, are a possibility though the young hedgehog tries to find out how his family can cross roads without accidents.
The Animal Ark series is about children caring for animals in different countries and circumstances.

AuditAngel · 15/05/2017 23:12

There is a new World's worst children due out at the end of the month

MissElizaBennett · 15/05/2017 23:22

What about the Borrowers series (Mary Norton; about a family of tiny people who live under the floorboards of an old house and survive by 'borrowing' things from the 'human beans' above them)? I loved Arrietty's adventures as a child!

ButTheBearSnoredOn · 15/05/2017 23:24

Blimey-not goodnight mr tom if she doesn't like sadness!

margaritasbythesea · 16/05/2017 06:24

We tried The Borrowers with me reading but it was too wordy for DS age 6. I love it though.

I used to read Goodnight Mr Tom with my challenging set 7 at secondary school last lesson Friday afternoon. The only time they were completely silent! Too much for dd at the moment I think. Later on though.

I will have a look at all of these. Many thanks to you all.

My two are 9 and 11 (very nearly 12) and still like a good Mrs Pepperpot story now and again. They have a gentle humour and touch on a few more complex themes on occasion - I find they work on a couple of levels. Anyway, what's the rush? Why not 'young' books, if they're well written?

We did all the Swallows and Amazons when they were 9-10 and 7-8, and they loved them, though there are some frightening/violent bits in a couple of the later books.

How about Finn Family Moomintroll? Beautifully written/translated.

Ballet Shoes.

Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing and Superfudge are very funny, light, well-written reads.

Some of these recommendations do surprise me a bit. The Machine Gunners is very gritty to say the least. I've only just read it to mine and athough I never, ever, ever censor books, there was one scene I left out because it was just too violent.

HeteronormativeHaybales · 16/05/2017 06:39

The Family from One End Street is lovely.

MrsPnut · 16/05/2017 06:43

The Bolds by Julian Clary and also Uncle Gobb's Dread Shed by Michael Rosen were really enjoyed by my daughter at 9.

KoalaDownUnder · 16/05/2017 06:48

Anne of Green Gables!

Little House on the Prairie. The entire series is beautiful.

HeteronormativeHaybales · 16/05/2017 06:50

Just been to look at my dc's bookshelves.

Five Children and It and the sequels - the Story of the Amulet/The Phoenix and the Carpet
Emil and the Detectives
The Wombles, of course
Pippi Longstocking/The Children of Noisy Village

HeteronormativeHaybales · 16/05/2017 06:52

And yes to Anne and What Katy Did. They are quite complex language-wise, though, for someone at the start of their reading career :)

margaritasbythesea · 16/05/2017 11:32

Thanks to everyone. I have nearly 200 euros worth of books in my amazon trolley. Now how to choose?

There are lots of these books in amazon 3 for 10 pounds if anyone is interested.

Has My Naughty Little Sister been mentioned? We all love them.

2014newme · 16/05/2017 11:59

My daughters loved naughty little sister when they were about 6 years old I think is too young for a 9 year old. Ditto milly molly mandy and clever polly.

Mustang27 · 16/05/2017 18:45

I read the hobbit at this age but I was quite an adept reader by this point. Lived in the country didn't have a tv lol

Leeds2 · 16/05/2017 19:11

Mr Majeika series by Humphrey Carpenter
Jolley Rogers series by Jonny Duddle. (Yes, it is spelt Jolley!)
Anything by Jeremy Strong - all "funny" books.
Mr Gum books by Andy Stanton.

mrsmortis · 18/05/2017 09:12

If she liked the Sheep Pig then how about some other Dick King Smith books. I loved Harry's Mad but my Mum's favourite is Saddlebottom. The Queen's Nose is good too.

My DD is 8 and is currently obsessed with the My Story books. I think her favourite is the one about Lady Jane Grey.
