After School Club Costs

DrLucyVanPelt · 03/11/2022 15:47

Just seeking opinions and info on what others pay for after school child care.

Our school (Northwest England) has decided to outsource the club from January, with the price increasing to £9.25 a child. It will run until 6pm, a snack provided but not anything substantial.

We've 3 kids, and not sure if nearly £30 a day is expensive? Or, if this is just what it costs and we've been fortunate so far to pay less?

TIA

That's less than I pay now, but there's a sibling discount. I think it's £11 for one and then £6 for siblings.

Ringmaster27 · 03/11/2022 15:52

The one my children attend is run by a private nursery round the corner from the school. It’s open from 3-6pm and costs £5 per hour.
Mine only attend for 1hr, which works out at £140 per half term which I think is reasonable 🤷🏻‍♀️

Merrow · 03/11/2022 15:54

Just checked - it's actually £9 for siblings. We're in the NW too and it's run in the school (I think not outsourced, but might be!)

BattenburgDonkey · 03/11/2022 15:55

We pay £13 for 3.15-6pm here and £9 for breakfast club

Isyesterdaytomorrowtoday · 03/11/2022 15:55

Ours is £10-11 I think, what have you been paying up until now?

Figmentofimagination · 03/11/2022 15:56

I'm in NW, it's £6 a child with snacks included. Run by school, till 5:30 Mon-Thurs and till 5 on Fri.

Whilst I would prefer later finish time, I find the flexibility they offer really good. I can book/cancel up to 9am that day. No paying for a half term up front.

I'm assuming the cost increase is to do with the cost of running from the outside source. So their insurance, DBS charges, cost of food and staff wages etc . Whilst when it was run by school some of the costs were absorbed as staff already worked at school, bulk buying the food alongside the food for lunches etc.

I've been looking at local schools ready for starting next year and they're around the £8-10 mark so yours seems in keeping with that. We're in the Midlands if that helps.

SusanSHelit · 03/11/2022 15:58

Ours is around £9 per day, runs until 6pm and provides a snack. A full week is £30 which I think is very reasonable but I don't know if there is a sibling discount

DrLucyVanPelt · 03/11/2022 15:58

No sibling discount that's been mentioned. It's been £7.50 for the past few years, but finishing at 5.30 rather than 6. Maybe we have been lucky to date then!

We pay £13 but they do get a big tea for that. And I use tax free childcare account to pay for it.

Longwhiskers · 03/11/2022 15:59

I can’t remember the per session cost but ours is about £255 for two children to go three afternoons a week. There is a snack but it’s very light like crackers and grated cheese.

purpleme12 · 03/11/2022 16:01

Ours is £12.50.
They pick them up from school, give them a very snacky tea and it's till 6.
So that price sounds good to me!

NerdyBird · 03/11/2022 16:01

We pay £11.50 I think, for 3-6pm and a snack provided. Only have one child so don't know about sibling discounts. We're in the south east. I think it's reasonable for the area.

DrLucyVanPelt · 03/11/2022 16:48

Thanks for the replies, does seem we've maybe been used to a lower fee than elsewhere then. Another thing to find extra ££ for!

My oldest DS went to after school in 2019 for 3 days a week and it was £15 a day. It's the only one in our area so may be why it's quite high.

MarigoldPetals · 03/11/2022 16:53

The costs of the snacks they provide and the fuel they use for electricity and heating will have gone up so they are likely to need to increase fees to cover this.

bluechameleon · 03/11/2022 16:54

Ours is 4.70 an hour, no discount for siblings. You can do 1 or 2 hours 3.30 until 5.30. They get a snack of fruit, and if they stay for the second hour they are encouraged to pack a more substantial snack.

Sandsnake · 03/11/2022 16:57

South East, run by the school. £16.50 for 15.15 - 18.00, with a hot meal.

bloodyeverlastinghell · 03/11/2022 17:00

9.70 for ours too but it only runs till 5 which is a bit early for most people.

MadeForThis · 03/11/2022 17:03

Ours is privately run but in the school grounds £18 per day. 5% discount for siblings if they attend on the same day.

Ringbling85 · 03/11/2022 17:18

I’m in Ireland and it’s €8 per hour for my two dc. School finishes at 2:20 and after school is available for a further 3 hours. They get a snack also.

Weepingwillows12 · 03/11/2022 17:20

£12 for 3:15 to 6. Think they do a half session rate too. Snacks provided. South East.

olivehater · 03/11/2022 17:25

I’m in the northwest and pay 6.50 for a snack ( wrap with ham cheese etc) till 5:45. Our school has recently brought it in-house which is better for the school. Can’t understand why you would want to outsource it!!

ButterflyBiscuit · 03/11/2022 17:25

Ours is £12 til 6 or £5 til 4.30

Lavender2021 · 03/11/2022 17:31

Don't forget to look into the tax free childcare scheme if they take it. You can add money though out the year even in school holidays to make the most of your allowance. Every £8 you pay in the government adds £2 up to £500 every 3 months.
