After School Club Costs

DrLucyVanPelt · 03/11/2022 15:47

Just seeking opinions and info on what others pay for after school child care.

Our school (Northwest England) has decided to outsource the club from January, with the price increasing to £9.25 a child. It will run until 6pm, a snack provided but not anything substantial.

We've 3 kids, and not sure if nearly £30 a day is expensive? Or, if this is just what it costs and we've been fortunate so far to pay less?

TIA

Because it doesn’t always make money @olivehater Local schools have had to close theirs because of low demand. Parents ask for it, the school then pays staff to run it and then parents don’t send their children!

Ditsy79 · 03/11/2022 17:35

We're in the Northwest. £7 for after-school club, pick up any time until 6pm. They also get tea - a sandwich or some crackers. Tea used to be more substantial, but I suppose they've had to cut it to more of a snack due to the cost of everything going up.

onionringcheeseypuff · 03/11/2022 17:43

I pay £12.50 per child after school club, and that's a reasonably low income area of north east England. Luckily, they are excellent

JellyBellies · 03/11/2022 17:46

@DrLucyVanPelt for that price, you could hire someone to pick you kids up from school, bring them home and stay with them till 6pm.

I found a lovely uni student on care.com who did this when my kids were in primary school. This was pre COVID in 2019 and I paid £100 a week.

gingercat02 · 03/11/2022 17:48

£11 here until 6pm just a snack. £9 for sibs. Breakfast club is £5 (3 for sibs) 7:30 until school time. North East England

JellyBellies · 03/11/2022 17:49

She was amazing, she would unload the dishwasher, give the kids a snack, get them to do music practice, play a game with them, sometimes cook something more substantial, fold laundry, etc
We still miss her!

cavily1806 · 03/11/2022 17:49

South Wales and paid £8.50 a day pre pandemic. Luckily she was old enough to not need it by time pandemic ended

Shinyandnew1 · 03/11/2022 17:50

Can’t understand why you would want to outsource it!!

Its looking likely that we will have to close ours as it’s operating at a loss. It’ll either be closed completely or outsourced.

TofuonToast · 03/11/2022 17:51

Jesus. I’m spoilt then. Breakfast club is £1.50 and after school club is staggered. So £3 until 430 or £6 until 6pm include snacks and small dinner!

Tisfortired · 03/11/2022 17:54

Wow reading this we have it good here! Also on Nw England. Breakfast club is £5 and after school club £6 with a snack provided (sandwich or something usually, sometimes anything decent leftover from lunch service.)

historygeek · 03/11/2022 17:56

Northern city- £7.50 from 3.15 until 6pm with snack (sandwich, wrap, sausage roll etc).

ButterflyBiscuit · 03/11/2022 18:08

Wow @TofuonToast how on earth are they managing to do it so cheap?! Seriously jealous. I'd be using it so much!

Lightsoutlondon · 03/11/2022 18:12

Privately run and £6.50 per hour per child. And the providers complain they don't make enough money - it's absolutely criminal. Midlands, at a state school.

Probably because they try and charge too much. Parents at our school desperately try and avoid using the after school club because it's so expensive!

Goldbar · 03/11/2022 18:33

London. £14 until 6pm. Kids get a picnic tea. It's outsourced though and the company who run it are very good.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 03/11/2022 18:34

Wow, ours is £4.50, south west.

soupmaker · 03/11/2022 18:58

I'm in Scotland. Ours is £64 a week. Runs 3-6 each school day. They don't let you pay only the days you need. (They used to) I currently use 3 days DD2 is in for 2 hours max those days so all in all it's bloody expensive and I'm about to sack it as she's going to be 10 and can walk home as there will be either me, DH or DD1 who is 15 in the house. I'd happily pay £15 a day but really resent paying for days I don't need.

SeemingOKToday · 03/11/2022 19:02

Ours is £8.50, 3.20pm - 5.30pm. Includes a snack like toast and fruit.

It's still far cheaper than the local private nursery equivalent club.

HanSB · 03/11/2022 19:03

Our school run one is £18 until 6pm and the privately run is £27.50!

scotstarstrikestwo · 03/11/2022 19:20

11 for breakfast club and 16 for afterschool as the one my son goes to. 42.50 a day for the holiday club they run

Whinge · 03/11/2022 19:32

Ours is £12 and they get a light tea, sandwich, pasta, wraps etc.

olivehater · 03/11/2022 19:55

I have to admit we are spoilt. People use it because it’s cheap and easy to book and cancel. I book my days the week before. But I can do it on the day and cancel it. It runs at a profit. A well run club that’s easily accessible shouldn’t run at a loss.

surreygirl1987 · 03/11/2022 20:02

Mine is £20 a day per child for after school club and breakfast club COMBINED. Not sure what the split is, but basically it's going to be £40 a day for my two kids 😭

RandomMess · 03/11/2022 20:04

13 years ago it was £15 per child no sibling discount until 6pm no cheaper option to collect them earlier.

😳

olivehater · 03/11/2022 17:25

I’m in the northwest and pay 6.50 for a snack ( wrap with ham cheese etc) till 5:45. Our school has recently brought it in-house which is better for the school. Can’t understand why you would want to outsource it!!

Because the school can't afford to pay staff to run it?
