Heparin injections after c section

When I had DS I was given 10 days of Heparin injections to self-inject into my stomach after my C section to reduce blood clots. I hated it!!!

Just wondering if this is always the case or whether guidance has changed? If you had a C section did you have the injections?

I did with my first (2019) and by 2021 the guidance changed so I didn’t need it with my second. I was so pleased!

I didn't have the injections, no. I had some weird inflatable boots that moved my legs intermittently and I was told to get up and move ASAP (which was a bit difficult considering I'd also had accreta surgery and lost half of my blood volume).

Come to think of it, perhaps that was why I didn't get the injections - I had had a major bleed.

DH did it for me as I was too much of a wuss - in to the fatty part of your upper leg is ok!

Had my DD in April this year via c section and had to have them.

I got given them (2021) I didn’t take them.
Guidance changes often especially with surgical aftercare the NHS is very “anti clot” happy which is great… don’t get me wrong… however I felt I was well/mobile enough to not require them after my section but as a nurse wouldn’t recommend this.

Ah ok so a mixed bag! Thanks all.

Sooo hoping won't need them as guidance will have changed. Literally my worst memory of that first week!

Not after a section but from 6 weeks pregnant to 6 weeks after birth with two pregnancies. If you do need to do it my advice would be to do it slowly and don't run afterwards

This is the risk assessment used in my trust for assessing whether women need to have the injections postnatally. This may be different in your trust but I thought it may be useful for you to see where you fit in on there. They are stingy but you don't have to do it into your stomach, you can do it into your upper arms or the front of your thighs. If you are very slim then it may be best to stick to your stomach but make sure alternate sides each day.

Thanks @Nursemumma92 that's so useful. My only risk factor there would be c section so very hopeful.

Great to know about not having to do tummy, that was the bit I hated the most.

It’s dependant on risk factors.

I had them with my first because I had an EMCS and preeclampsia, but I didn’t have them with my second because it was an ELCS and no other complications.

I had a section in 2022 and had the injections. Given I'd spent the first 3 months of the pregnancy injecting myself daily with Clexane (in my stomach), to try and prevent another miscarriage, I was pretty chilled to only have to do it for 10 days.

I think must have been just a blanket thing at Kings as I had an ELCS with no complications at all. But I'm at Lewisham now so hopefully different!

I had a section in 2021 and they did discuss the injections but said I could wear the stockings instead. Which I was delighted with.

I had a winter baby and couldn't wear pants for about 2 weeks because of the wound, so they kept my legs nice and toasty, which was an added bonus 🤣
