Heparin injections after c section

arlequin · 22/08/2023 21:43

When I had DS I was given 10 days of Heparin injections to self-inject into my stomach after my C section to reduce blood clots. I hated it!!!

Just wondering if this is always the case or whether guidance has changed? If you had a C section did you have the injections?

I had to do them after having DD in 2018 and had to do them in my stomach too. I was black and blue!!

Winnipeggy · 22/08/2023 22:20

Sorry I should have mentioned 2022 baby

WaltzingWaters · 22/08/2023 22:22

I had to have them after emergency section last year. But I had had 3 days in labour and a slow recovery afterwards so not sure if that impacted needing them.

Olika · 22/08/2023 22:36

I had them and so did my SIL. In the beginning it was ok but then when I started running out of space and tried to inject on the same spot it was horrible. I has them for ages afterwards and I was so relieved when they ended.

I had to do them. I hated it. Always bruised so badly. The thought of injecting my stomach after a c section made me want to puke. The midwives always said meaty part of thigh is fine.

I'm definitely going to check about thigh as that's far more acceptable to me!

I had to have them in April 2022, I feel like it was 7 days though but my memory could be hazy haha!

I got my husband to do it too.

snowballsinhell · 22/08/2023 22:51

I checked down that list and only met one criteria - c-section

I still had to have the injections and the socks

My hospital made such a big deal of the fucking socks, brought me in 2 days beforehand to measure me for them. They were the socks

Post c-section I stood up to get baby out of her crib, I bled all over the socks, my wee bag and my slippers

I hobbled to the toilets to rinse them, wheeling my little wee bag, convinced I was gonna die and be yelled at because of the fucking socks

Lovely midwife found me back in bed crying over my wet socks, patted me on the head and brought me over new socks

She had oodles of them

Fucking socks

She did also bring me a cup of tea

Also still had to have the injections

Olika · 22/08/2023 22:55

@snowballsinhell oh gosh the socks. They put them on me after my emergency c-section and I only got one pair so I kept washing them at home and then use hair dryer to get them dry quickly but most of the time put them on damp. Hated them as well.

arlequin · 22/08/2023 22:58

Oh god the socks sound almost as bad 😆 will report back next week on what I get given

I had to have them with both of mine. 10 days with my first but 6 weeks with my second because I was higher risk (I was old apparently!), was very glad when they were done!

Farmersweeklyreader · 22/08/2023 23:25

I had to inject for 10 days post c section, my baby is now 10 weeks old. Also had to wear the socks. My risk factors were c section and I’m also an older first time mum (41)
I was told to inject in my tummy, my husband did all my injections for me, I’m by no means squeamish but can’t possibly inject myself

Summertimesaddness · 22/08/2023 23:32

I had to have them this June (2023) had them in the fatty part of my thigh for 10 days. Was the worst part about my c section! 😂

AnneLovesGilbert · 22/08/2023 23:35

Both times, for 2 weeks after with first and 6 weeks after my second but I’d been on them from bfp with both due to previous mcs so I was an old hand and could do them with my eyes shut.

Best of luck!

TheCraicDealer · 22/08/2023 23:39

I had to have them after my 2019 section where I haemorrhaged, DH did them for me. My only risk factor was the section at that stage.

However I subsequently got diagnosed with a clotting disorder after recurrent miscarriages and ended up having to do daily injections from diagnosis at 16w with DS until 6w post birth. Very quickly got over the ick factor and just got on with doing them myself rather than wait for DH to present himself. The fucking socks are a million times more annoying- the midwife was like “don’t worry about them” out the side of her mouth given I was very mobile and moving well post birth.

The same midwife told me the threshold for prescribing the blood thinners post birth is really low, so I would just prepare yourself!

Nat6999 · 23/08/2023 00:20

I had multiple risk factors but only had them for 3 days out of the 5 I was in hospital after giving birth. I had the long Ted stocking but took them off as I was leaving as I can't stand anything tight on my legs.

Dyra · 23/08/2023 09:05

I had multiple risk factors. Both intermediate and low risk on the chart nursemumma provided. Also explains why I had them post birth with my first which was a completely uneventful vaginal birth.

Had 10 days post C-section. Since I'd been doing them myself every day I was in hospital prior (2 weeks) I was a dab hand at finding unbruised pinches of skin to inject into. Thigh or belly.

hdbs17 · 23/08/2023 09:52

Had 6 weeks of them but I stopped after 2 weeks as I was able to enjoy going out for walks by then.

I also found it incredibly difficult to self inject so DH had to do it for me, which he also hated because he knew it stung and I'd been through enough pain. Plus, I was covered in bruises from them - across my belly and hips.

Pinkywoo · 23/08/2023 09:57

Yes I had them after both sections, 2019 and 2022. I had to have them for 6 weeks both times though, I hated them!

CuntRYMusicStar · 23/08/2023 09:58

They gave me them with my first c section but I didn't use them and used it as motivation to get up and moving. With my second I refused to be prescribed them and got up and moving straight away again - as soon as the epidural wore off.

I had no other risk factors. I was recently hospitalised and immobile for a week for a severe illness so the nurses gave me the injections as I couldn't move at all and they hurt so bad I was pleased with the decisions I made after the c sections!

Clefable · 23/08/2023 10:00

My husband did them for me with both sections in my upper thighs. Think he quite enjoyed pretending to be a doctor for 30 seconds! I didn't find them bad at all though. Those bloody stockings on the other hand. I took them off the second we got home and never put them on again, much to my midwife's disapproval!

whatwhatinthebutt · 23/08/2023 10:03

I had mine in 2016 and they gave me three days to do in my thigh. I couldn't do it, neither could my partner, the midwife refused, so I never got them.

AcceptYourself · 23/08/2023 10:04

I didn't need them dec 2022! Thank god

PerspiringElizabeth · 23/08/2023 10:05

vintagechristmas · 22/08/2023 21:48

I did with my first (2019) and by 2021 the guidance changed so I didn’t need it with my second. I was so pleased!

2017 and 2022 and had to both times 😭 although DH did them for me.

PerspiringElizabeth · 23/08/2023 10:06

oh no, wrong, mine were fragmin! Ignore me.
