Were you doing something when your waters broke or did they just go?

Not sure if title makes sense, what I was trying to ask is....when your waters broke was it as a result of doing something, such as standing up, sitting down, sneezing, turning over in bed, lots of movements from baby etc. etc.

Or were you just sat still watching tv and they went?

In my first pregnancy mine didn't go until well into labour and can't really remember how it happened.

Just wondering what other people's experience's were, am 38 weeks at the moment and feeling strangely obsessed by the whole waters breaking thing so please humor me.

DD1 On the loo at 3pm, born at 10.20pm
DD2 Lying in bed, big pop at 9am, born at 2.04pm
DD3 Can't remember at all!
DD4 Just before I pushed her out.

You notice how the timings are missing for 2 and 3! They were all horribly late too.

2nd time around at 35 weeks with no warning signs at all - happened after work during my baby shower (honest!) in Cafe Rouge in central London. Took two taxi rides and a walk to find the right building that had the maternity department. Thankfully it was dark, I was wearing black and the taxi drivers were sympathetic (although I was told to sit on my jacket!).
Within three hours of eating my dinner I had a baby - didn't get the presents for weeks though.

With DS1 I was walking to the toilet, it was 5am and had woken with the sudden urge to wee. I was still half asleep when they went and couldnt make up my mind if my waters had gone or if I had wet myself lol. Remember having the misguided notion that as my waters had gone that I would be holding my baby within a couple of hours at the most He arrived at 1.45am the following day

With DS2 the midwife broke my waters and he arrived 20mins later at 8.56am

My waters with DD went at 1.30am, just as I was going to sleep and dh, who had just got in from work, had sat down with a beer (luckily unopened) to watch a long awaited golf tournament on tv. He managed to watch all of it though (minus the beer because she didnt arrive until 9.07am

Was overdue and induced, had spent several hours ripped to the tits on G&A when I felt something start to change and yelled at my mum and birth partner to get the midwife. Mum said, calm down, I said I needed the loo and leapt off the bed, ran towards the bathroom and whoosh, dropped a huge puddle on the floor. Cue immediate wheelchair race to delivery room - and about another 2 hours heaving before DS arrived.
My friend, who had her DD a few months previously, was 37 weeks, had been having a takeaway with a mate of hers, stood up to take the empty plates through to the kitchen and went splash. She told me later that the thing she remembered most was the dog licking the carpet as she stood there going 'Oh shit what was that?'

DS - while crouching down to fill the coal bucket (yes really)! Had to leg it upstairs with water pouring out, wasn't even i labour!

DD - FINALLY after 2 hours of labour fore waters went, and then suddenly as she popped out, hindwaters went, like a tidal wave.

LowFat · 29/02/2008 08:58

Waters broke for DD during labour, about 3 hours before she arrived.

DS broke his own withing seconds of crowning

I was hoping both times they would break while I was in Tescos or something - but I am a closet drama queen

Bikergoose · 29/02/2008 09:46

Baby spent the night turning and must have turn the sac. I woke up at 3 for a wee and
continued 'weeing' for the next 16 hours. After been induced twice I had a C-section.

duchesse · 29/02/2008 09:59

First- broke spectacularly, while I was sitting down, in a church, during a concert my husband was playing in, when he actually about to start a solo. You should have seen the look of face of the man sitting behind me... priceless

Second- had just jumped out of bed- waters went everywhere- all over carpet.

Third- had nap- felt membranes pop whilst lying down, but there was no water left to come out, so relatively unmessy. She's not like that now at 10...

spugs · 29/02/2008 10:14

both of mine went in labour when i was about 6 cms. first time they went as i sat down with a massive gush and i got the shock of my life. second time i got off the loo and thought i was still peeing (wondered why it was a bit pinkl) was only a tiny trickle. luckily was in the hospital both times so didnt need to worry about the mess

MelanieLiv · 29/02/2008 10:30

Guildford high street on the way to have dinner with our ante-natal group! My husband and I laughed hysterically all the way home.

Niecie · 29/02/2008 10:35

I was preparing to go out and buy some baby bed linen for DS1's cot and I was sitting on the loo. I had done the deed and was about to stand up and they went pop. Labour didn't start for about 8 hours after that.

With DS2 I was in labour and about to go to hospital. My waters broke about 30 seconds before DH phone an ambulance. No way was I getting to the hospital in time after that. DS 2 was born 20 mins later.

casbie · 29/02/2008 11:45

last pregnancy - walked into work 2 days before due to go on maternity leave, walked confidently through the doors and gushed, all over the reception...

ran to the loo, stuffed a pad down there - walked into my office said calmly that i have to go...

started to tidy my desk etc (what was i thinking!) and then said bye to everyone (saying 'no, i do not need an ambulance, no i can drive the car myself etc')...

got a blanket out of the car put on driver's seat, sat down and drove home (after phoning hubby to get rid of children!)

i can't believe i was so blasé!!

blondiep14 · 29/02/2008 12:01

Mine just started leaking when i was in bed and carried on for the next day - wasn't sure whether it was my waters or i'd suddenly developed incontinence!!

Went in to labour about 24 hours later, in the nick of time before having to be induced!

ClaireAg · 29/02/2008 13:02

I was in hospital having been induced, and was sound asleep in the bed at about 3am. My waters broke with a big POP and gushed out everywhere! The midwife came in and was teasing me asking if I'd wet the bed - we were all giggling like mad until my first contraction hit - ouch!!

hotCheeseBurns · 29/02/2008 18:59

I had just got into bed on Christmas eve when I noticed some wetness, got out of bed and it was gushing! Got through a pack of extra thick sanitary towels in about 10 minutes and then constructed myself a series of bath towel nappies (puke) which I had to wear all Christmas day. My contractions started shortly after my waters broke so no sleep either. Worst Christmas ever.

jaype · 29/02/2008 19:50

First time they didn't break till I started pushing. Second time, I was watching Pete Burns get kicked out of the Celeb Big Brother house with the cat on my lap and felt a pop and wet pants. Had to waddle up the corridor to the loo feeling like the incontinent old lady on Little Britain. No contractions until 4 hours after.

Clazz · 01/03/2008 01:39

I was just dishing up tea and felt a trickle! I had had a student midwife do a really rough palpation only a few hours earlier and I'm sure that's what caused it as I was only 36 weeks. Spent 2 days in hospital constantly leaking, waiting for contractions but nothing so had a caesar in the end.

KateJess · 04/03/2008 12:25

I was 37 weeks and had just started my maternity leave...was looking forward to at least 3 weeks of putting my feet up and watching lots of daytime TV.
However bambino had other plans...I was putting the rubbish out when I felt a small pop and a trickle - went to the loo where the trickle got bigger!! This was 10am and my gorgeous Jessica was born at 10.15am the next day!

Norfolkbumpkin · 04/03/2008 15:31

I had been gently swaying about on the pilates ball watching tripe on the tv. I went upstairs to get my pyjamas on ready for bed and suddenly my waters broke. I swiftly wedged my nice clean pyjamas between my legs and waddled back downstairs again to inform dh!

milky1965 · 04/03/2008 21:36

my waters broke whilst driving my husband home from the pub, at 8 mths pregnant. His response was "urgh, get out, you're driving my car!"

Emski81 · 05/03/2008 11:50

Was fed up with being so massive and uncomfortable ... so tired the curry thing did not work so tried the sex thing and did not seem to work ...

I got off the bed to pee and just before I turned to sit down and pee they splashed all over the bathroom

Went to A&E I was not in labour. Went back 48 hours later was induced and then 48 hours later was still not in labour...then they rememberd my waters broke on the sunday and it was like 4 days later and they had forgotton to check my notes again and see that they had . So I was sent to labour ward and had to wait the rest of the night till 11am the next day for them to perform a C secetion as I would not dialate.

was rather exausting.

Teuch · 05/03/2008 11:56

Mine went in Mackays...still gutted that it wasn't M&S as apparently they give you lots of freebies if that happens

IssyLu · 05/03/2008 12:03

With DD my waters broke at work as I stood up. Luckily her head was working as a bung so not much leaked out. I strolled out saying I would work from home in the afternoon. She was a month early. Then nothing happened so I went to the hairdressers the next day as planned going via the hospital who sent me away saying they hadn't broken, although I knew they had. Spent the next day resting and then had DD the following morning. The fluid came out with her.

JRocks · 05/03/2008 12:10

My waters were broken for me as I had to be induced...it was a bit surreal though, they gave me gas and air, which I thought would be nice to try..but the radio that was on in the delivery room started playing the 'Last Post' (it was remembrance Sunday). All a bit eerie! Still can't hear Last Post without it taking me right back to that moment
