Were you doing something when your waters broke or did they just go?

Not sure if title makes sense, what I was trying to ask is....when your waters broke was it as a result of doing something, such as standing up, sitting down, sneezing, turning over in bed, lots of movements from baby etc. etc.

Or were you just sat still watching tv and they went?

In my first pregnancy mine didn't go until well into labour and can't really remember how it happened.

Just wondering what other people's experience's were, am 38 weeks at the moment and feeling strangely obsessed by the whole waters breaking thing so please humor me.

With all four of mine my waters went at the very last minute (ie about two pushes from the baby being born)

HollyPutTheKettleOn · 27/02/2008 08:25

With dd they broke as I pushed her out, with ds I was sat on the sofa with the laptop on my lap posting on my AN thread on MN! My post went something like "Oh fuck, my waters just broke!" !

bozza · 27/02/2008 08:28

It was a result of trying to push a baby out both times. Second stage labour both times. DD was born 2 mins after water went.

LolaLadybird · 27/02/2008 08:29

First time, they broke just as I'd finished drying myself off after a shower. Phoned the labour ward and midwife asked if I was sure it wasn't some shower water that had got 'left up there' and trickled down slightly later - not sure how she thought I'd managed to keep it up there for a couple of minutes, presumably lots of pelvic floor exercises!. She told me to put a pad in and wait and see what happened, just as I was doing that I had a real flood, and I was left in no doubt!

Second time was an el c-section and they did the suction thing but the tiny junior doctor assisting couldn't reach the operating table very well (I kid you not!!) and it all went over the floor. Cue a slightly panicked conversation with the anaesthetist about whether he could lower the table any further.

being induced, bouncing on a birth ball. the pop echoed.

ephrinedaily · 27/02/2008 10:28

Just got out of bath where I was eating a pasty. Think it was the pasty that tipped things over the edge.

happycherrycake · 27/02/2008 10:40

Sitting on sofa watching Eastenders. Thought I'd just wet myself...
Never did see the end of that episode!

OrmIrian · 27/02/2008 10:43

Lying on our bed with DD watching Bear in the Big Blue House. I twisted round to get my cup of tea off the bedside table and they went. And proceeded to keep tricking constantly for about 24 hours. Horrible.

First time mine broke during labour, second time labour went so quick she was on her way as in crowning when I stopped for a sec to realise my waters hadnt brocken yet. I got over it pretty quick and continued with giving bith. It wasnt untill after I realised my waters had broken gradually over the day. I had read up that day what it was to have a lot of discharge, it said it was a pre labour sign, I was like well derr Im 38 weeks, not really concidering I was at the start of my labour. WOOPS

mymama · 28/02/2008 06:32

1st time - broken in labour for me.

2nd time- laying in bed reading a story to dd. Went all over bed and leaked slightly for remaining labour.

3rd time - laying on sofa watching tv. Copious amounts gushing on sofa and continously throughout labour. Will never forget walking into hospital with towels wrapped around me and water running down my legs/pants into my shoes.

laura032004 · 28/02/2008 06:37

DS1 - broken during labour
DS2 - I felt him really vigorously moving around whilst lying in bed, as though he was trying to claw his way out. Then felt a pop, and the trickling went on until he was born - 6 days later! These were just my hind waters though, as more were broken during the labour.

phunkiephedora · 28/02/2008 17:00

Mine broke in our bedroom as I was trying to summon up the energy to go and visit friends ... my husband followed me around with a mop (no, really!) cos he didn't think the veneer on our bedroom floor would cope!! Then he put a towel on the front seat of his car ... fine, but it was the dog's towel. I felt dead posh being driven to hospital in a Jag on a dog towel ;-)

Elkat · 28/02/2008 20:44

Mine broke as I was sat in the bath. Could see movement in the water and so was sat trying to wonder whether I was weeing myself or what was going on... couldn't work it out for ages!

Second time was 20 mins before I delivered my baby girl.

alibag · 28/02/2008 21:01

First time: in bed in middle of night, woke up & thought I'd wet myself (only partially though, had to have the crochet hook trick during induced labour 36 hours later)
Seond time: stood ironing - again partially but labour carried it to its logical conclusion

pointydog · 28/02/2008 21:07

mine were broken for me with dd1 and only broke just before the birth of dd2.

I must make very tough membranes

Kindersurpise · 28/02/2008 21:15

DD: while pushing, moments before DD was born

DS: During the final of the Uefa Cup, Greece against Portugal. Was sitting on the sofa and heard/felt a pop. Went to loo, waters were trickling out.

DH predictably asked if we could wait until after the game finished.

amytheearwaxbanisher · 28/02/2008 21:22

i was in bed asleep eight months and one week gone and woke to a sharp pain were ds head would have been at that stage, felt like a hard kick but as i knew he was head down and it couldnt be a kick i got a fright,i sat up and had the feeling of an elastic band snapping down below if that makes sense jumped out of bed and that was it waters broken!first contraction five minutes later.i really got a shock as all my relations had to have theirs broken in hospital so i wasnt expecting it at all

ChasingSquirrels · 28/02/2008 21:23

with both of mine I was just sitting there, dc1 - watching tv on the sofa, dc2 - sitting in bed reading.

intravenouscoffee · 28/02/2008 21:29

Hind waters went as I was putting on a cardigan in preparation for going to hospital while DH was arguing with MW about whether I should come in or not. Shreiking 'Tell them my waters have broken, I don't care what they say we're coming in' between contractions added to the drama of the moment. Fore waters didn't go until she crowned so don't really remember much about it. Felt quite cheated - i'd put protective coverings on all the car seats from 36 weeks onward cos someone told me that amniotic fluid rots the upholstery.

RiojaLover75 · 28/02/2008 22:05

Can't remember much about the first time, was drugged up to the eye balls, waters went mid labour in the hospital, I had one leg up on the bed trying to get back on it when they went (but it turned out to be only the hind waters).

2nd time round! Well there's a story! Waters went in the car going round the roundabout by Tescos in Guildford. I was about to push DS2 out, only just got to the hospital in time . Turned up at the hospital soaking, swearing and DS2 arrived about half an hour later. Worth noting that only a couple of hours earlier I was singing along with all the other Mums and children at playgroup AND drove home having contractions with DS1 in the car, I was convinced I had hours to go!

expatinscotland · 28/02/2008 22:06

The first time, the midwife broke mine at 8cm dilation and voila, I was at 10cm in a few minutes!

Second time, they went as I was pushing out DD2.

JingleyJen · 28/02/2008 22:08

mine went during a contraction it made me cry because it was like a gun going off underwater and I thought something had happened to the baby.. the midwife kept saying it was ok but I couldn't hear her as I was crying too much.

tegan · 28/02/2008 22:11

dd1 - waters broke in hospital before pushing.

dd2 on phone to best mate who was asking if she heard dh right at school (picking up dd1) had my waters broke, at that exact moment they went all over the living room floor

AdamAnt · 28/02/2008 22:13

DC1 - twiddling nipples while watching This Morning

DC2 - doing a wee in between hardcore contractions

JossStick · 28/02/2008 22:24

Mine went with DS1 in the middle of the night in the bathroom. Rushed off to hospital and had a very traumatic birth and forgot about them iyswim.

DM & DD went to let dog out next day before coming to see me and bizarrely pinky flooded waters gone from bathroom floor!

Dog had clearly helped himself (boak).
