2nd time around - how long was the pushing stage?

Apologies if this has been answered before - I've only seen threads on the whole labour times.

I think I was ~1.5h for the pushing stage first time round but I've read that this is usually much quicker subsequently! I'm concerned that as I (luckily) dilated fairly quickly and without too much trouble first time it may be a rush getting to the hospital. I will obviously speak to midwives to ask what the recommend but wanted to know people's general experience of 2nd stage timing.

(I would consider a home birth if DH wasn't absolutely horrified by the idea, I'm too ambivalent to talk him round)

Marking place as I'm due DC2 in less than a fortnight.

With DS I pushed for around 2 hours, after having already been in labour for 15 hours.

One of the very first things the midwife said to me moments after DS was born, "Ohh, your next labour won't take as long as that." Hmm

fuckityfuckfuckfuck · 11/08/2012 19:26

First baby took about 2 hours, but she was back to back and I was epiduraled up, so lying flat. Second and third births were both still back to back but turned as I was stood upright, and took 8 minutes and 6 minutes respectively. It was a bit of a shock tbh to get the sudden urge to push the second time round and find that the pushing felt so efficient. Far fromt he hours of despondently pushing and feeling like nothing was happening, or worse, that dd's head was there but was slipping back each time, both subsequent dc were born in a couple of very strong and productive pushes. Good luck, I'm sure you'll be fine :) With my second I almost didn't dare believe labour could be easier. It was a very different, and much calmer experience than I'd ever dared hope tbh.

My first took 2 hours of pushing, then ventouse to deliver as he got stuck. Second took two contractions and two long pushes and she was out!! Couldn't have been any quicker Grin

AntsMarching · 11/08/2012 21:15

My first was 1.5 hours of pushing. My second was 30 minutes.

Also, first time I got to 10cm in a textbook 1cm/hr fashion, second time was much quicker.

ShhhhhGoBackToSleep · 11/08/2012 21:37

1st was 2 hours ending in ventouse.

2nd was about 4 minutes :-)

Eek!!! Thanks for the replies... I have a few friends who've had almost car park moments and it sounds as if it's not uncommon for it to be super quick. I will be on the lookout for any symptoms!
Glad all went well for everyone!

1st was 1 hour, second 14 minutes.

ChocolateIsAFoodGroup · 12/08/2012 17:03

First was about 5 minutes, I think? (and had epidural, and was on my back! Grin)

Second was one 'practice push' then two real pushes and out! (also epi).

I've been told to phone my doulas early on in first stage with DC3, so as not to risk car baby (had good friend actually have baby in car; it does happen!)

Another 4 minute pushing stage here too. All happened very quickly, after the first push I thought he was out but it turned out it was my waters that had broken, next push or two and out he popped!

JustFabulous · 12/08/2012 19:17

Baby one was a section.
Baby two (1st labour) - 20 minutes pushing.
Baby three (2nd labour) - 7 minutes pushing.

It isn't always a good thing to push baby out super fast.

MoonHare · 12/08/2012 21:30

First 45 mins

Second 8 mins (planned home birth)

rubyslippers · 12/08/2012 21:32

Less than 4 minutes!

First time over an hour

lunar1 · 12/08/2012 21:34

ds1 9 mins, ds2 4 mins!

Quip · 12/08/2012 21:36

ds1 2 hours 20 mins
ds2 1 hour
dd 3 pushes (so I guess about 1.5 minutes!!!)

blueberryboybait · 12/08/2012 21:38

DD1 20mins DD2 no time recorded I literally wriggled up the bed during a contraction and delivered DD2 on the bed ( in her bag of waters) as I moved - no one was expecting that!

RandomMess · 12/08/2012 21:38

dc1 around 1-2 hours
dc2 less than 5 minutes
dc3 less than 5 minutes
dc4 8cm to delivered less than 3 minutes and just 2 contractions Shock

Herrena · 12/08/2012 21:41

One minute, if that! 3 pushes and he rocketed out Confused no-one was expecting him that fast, the midwife didn't even have her gloves on and there was no-one to catch him!!

DS1 took about 20 minutes and emerged with his hand over his head, the little sod

Unfortunately, second time did involve a lot of poo coming out. Sorry for TMI :(

readyforno2 · 12/08/2012 21:42

Ds1 37mins
Ds2 from 7-8 cms to birth 37 mins. 5 mins pushing

exoticfruits · 12/08/2012 21:45

I can't remember, except quick. DS3 was 2 minutes.

5madthings · 12/08/2012 21:48

ds1 was a three DAY labour with 3hrs of pushing, almost forceps etc but 'just' an episiotomy in the end.

ds2 7hrs of labour, 1 and a bit hours of that pushing.

ds3 3hrs of labour, 3 pushes and he was out :)

ds4 1hr of labour, no pushing he delivered himself into the birthing pool!

dd 3hr labour, only 3 pushes, and she was back to back, midwife said she would have shot out had she been the right way round.

MeeWhoo · 12/08/2012 21:54

I was also wondering about this and now I don't know whether to be happy that I probably will not have to push for 3 fecking hours again,or to start worrying about getting there on time!

StrawberrytallCAKE · 12/08/2012 22:00

Oh lord, my first was 14 mins and I'm due in 3 1/2 months...I'll be the one in the car park fingers crossed with a paramedic or two. Eek.

messagetoyourudy · 12/08/2012 22:07

blueberry - I too delivered DS2 born in his caul!!!

Also no pushing - I was 999 to hospital and admitted then the midwife said pant as she could see the baby's head and he just plopped out!

LittlePushka · 12/08/2012 22:10

Hi Twixed. Like you my first was 1.5 hrs, but second was 20 mins! And easier as I knew the deal!

Best of luck to you my lovely. Smile
