2nd time around - how long was the pushing stage?

Apologies if this has been answered before - I've only seen threads on the whole labour times.

I think I was ~1.5h for the pushing stage first time round but I've read that this is usually much quicker subsequently! I'm concerned that as I (luckily) dilated fairly quickly and without too much trouble first time it may be a rush getting to the hospital. I will obviously speak to midwives to ask what the recommend but wanted to know people's general experience of 2nd stage timing.

(I would consider a home birth if DH wasn't absolutely horrified by the idea, I'm too ambivalent to talk him round)

1st 1.5 hours pushing
2nd 1 push and she was out, caught by husband, midwife arrived several minutes later (homebirth)!

I had a second degree tear both times, apparently second time I tore along same place as first time as scar tissue doesn't stretch well.

1st was quick - but still several minutes I think
2nd was a few pushes - two pushes actually as I remember telling the midwife I needed to get my breath back between first and second push. I also remember the midwife telling a trainee that she'd better get her gloves on quick if she wanted to help!

Seriously, I didn't want a home birth but realised it was a distinct possibility so the midwife made sure we had all the gear at home and the phone numbers "just in case" even though I was always booked in for a hospital birth.

I made it to the hospital in time but distinctly remember finishing my coffee in the cafe and then telling DH we'd better go back up to the delivery suite - DD2 arrived about 30 mins later.

Not sure about the pushing stage specifically, but when it's time for DC2, I'll be camping in the hospital car park. With DD I was having contractions for 2 days, but then my waters broke and she was born 2.5 hrs later. When I arrived at the hospital after the 20 min journey I was already 6cm, they said I'd be about another 4 hours, and suddenly it all went nuts and DD was here!

Dd1 took about 2.5 hours of pushing. Did not have any intervention as she was not stuck. She was born at 1 min past midnight on the 1st anniversary of my sil death so it is believed within the family that my sil held onto her until the right day( I know it's silly but there you go).

Dd2 was out within 2 pushes. Bit of a shock

1st, 2 hours pushing then ventouse & episiotomy (ow!).

2nd, a mere 1.5 hours, but she did have the cord twice round her neck so was effectively bungee jumping in my fanjo (less ow than it sounds). But no tearing or even grazing, result!

TruthSweet · 14/08/2012 22:02

DD1 was 2.5 hours of pushing before the ventouse was brought out but no tearing or episiotomy (I refused to be cut and good job as I didn't tear, just had a couple of skid marks)

DD2 was 4 mins with no tearing bar a skid mark

DD3 was 17mins with no tearing bar a skid mark (and she had a massive head so I controlled her descent - she would have been out in a second if I hadn't!)

DD4?? Only a few weeks to find out Grin

1st was 4 hours of pushing, ventouse, episiotimy and 4 2nd degree tears. Urgh. Turned out his umbilical cord was super short.

I bloomin' well hope second (due March) is quicker and less terrifying.

CareerClueless · 19/08/2012 22:55

DC1 - 2 hours resulting in a ventouse delivery

DC2 - about 20 minutes of pushing

DC3 - not sure as I pushed a lot through the whole labour really; I had an urge to push from around 4cm, twigged that bearing down eased the pain, and pushed away on and off from then. The whole labour was only around 3 hours though.
