2nd time around - how long was the pushing stage?

Apologies if this has been answered before - I've only seen threads on the whole labour times.

I think I was ~1.5h for the pushing stage first time round but I've read that this is usually much quicker subsequently! I'm concerned that as I (luckily) dilated fairly quickly and without too much trouble first time it may be a rush getting to the hospital. I will obviously speak to midwives to ask what the recommend but wanted to know people's general experience of 2nd stage timing.

(I would consider a home birth if DH wasn't absolutely horrified by the idea, I'm too ambivalent to talk him round)

Wondering if I can set a new Olympic record third time ;0)

BellaOfTheBalls · 13/08/2012 06:58

First was 2+ hours.

Second was 6 minutes.

fuckbadger · 13/08/2012 09:40

About 40 minutes for me but she had both hands on her head so I think that slowed things down.

JennerOSity · 13/08/2012 09:46

Crivens! I read this with interest as having second in Oct and wondered if it is true seconds are quicker. It seems it is!

For this reason I am having a home birth as only just made it to hospital on time for the first... I do not want to have baby in transit plus the tea is better at my house

JennerOSity · 13/08/2012 09:48

Can I also ask all these posters who have pushed out in a few short minutes - did that make you more susceptible to tearing? I believe a controlled steady push is best to avoid tears - so did the really quick ones have tears or was it just ace to get it done so quickly? :)

blueberryboybait · 13/08/2012 09:55

DD1 - 2nd degree tear including a labial tear, DD2 nothing at all, no tears or grazes. I guess because there was no active pushing and my body did it everything had stretched before she fell out or I just have a bucket fanjo

Herrena · 13/08/2012 11:58

I had a 3rd degree tear with DS1 despite slowness because he had an arm over his head, but 'only' a 2nd degree tear with DS2. He was a fast delivery but also smallish, so maybe the tear would have been worse if he'd been bigger [grateful for small mercies emoticon]

5madthings · 13/08/2012 12:11

jenner i had an episiotomy with ds1 and he took 3hrs of pushing, ds2 took over an hour and i tore with him. the last three were all quick ie 3 pushes or no pushing in the case of ds4 who was 10lb 13oz and no tearing with any of those three :)

accidentalchickenkeeper · 13/08/2012 12:55

Jenner. I didn't tear with either of my births. Both were 8 and a half pounders.

JennerOSity · 13/08/2012 13:08

Cool - thanks guys - so it seems speed of delivery has less to do with tearing or not than other factors then. I feel relieved about that. :)

milkymocha · 13/08/2012 13:09

Both no pain relief. 1st was 48 minutes, 2nd was 20 minutes :)

messagetoyourudy · 13/08/2012 13:10

Jenner I had a few stitches with DS1 but that was after a 2 and a half hour pushing stage and a threatened episiotomy - The midwife told me I had 3 more pushes and then she would do an episiotomy, so I damm well pushed him out!

2nd time was mega quick - 45min from 1st twinge to actual birth, but no tear.

milkymocha · 13/08/2012 13:11

And no tears with a 7lb 11oz and 7lb 14oz.
I think tears are determined by the elasticity of your body and pushing/panting when told to !
My labours in total were 8hrs each more or less'

ClaimedByMe · 13/08/2012 13:13

DD - 20 minutes
DS - 6 minutes

the midwives never took me seriously at each birth when I said the baby was coming, it was quite a shock for them!

lindsell · 13/08/2012 13:20

With dc2 it was 5mins of trying desperately not to push (while staggering across carpark) and about 30secs of actually pushing. No tears.

With dc1 it was about 5mins of pushing and a small 1st degree tear (more I think because I didn't listen to the mw telling me when to stop/start pushing and just carried on pushing regardless Blush

WipsGlitter · 13/08/2012 13:23

Five minutes. He shot out. It was amazing.

readyforno2 · 13/08/2012 17:51

Ds 1 had an episiotomy.
Ds 2 2nd degree tear. To be honest didn't even notice it happening until the midwife told me and it healed much better and quicker than the episiotomy.

Sarahplane · 13/08/2012 18:20

My 2nd was definitely harder than my first. 1st wasnt timed but about 2 or 3 involuntary pushes. She pretty much headbutted her way out then shot threw the water. 2nd took an hour of pushing but he was back to back and nearly ten pounds.

I'd been warned after my first labour that I would probably deliver fast again (she was less than four hours from when I realised I was in labour) but the 2lb weight difference between them definitely had an affect. I think I'll stop at 2, I don't fancy trying to squeeze out a 12lb next time.

MaliKat · 13/08/2012 21:00

About 1hr the first time (total labour 4.5) probably about 5 mins the second (total labour 50 mins). Just made it into the delivery room!

milk · 14/08/2012 09:12

I am loving this thread Grin I am due (DC2) in 7 weeks and love the idea of having a quicker labour second time round Grin

Huffpot · 14/08/2012 09:15

My first was 4 hours pushing, episiotomy and ventouse(pure nightmare) and 2nd was 20 minutes pushing and a pure dream with no intervention

holler · 14/08/2012 09:21

I like this thread! Hated the pushing stage with DD2 after a relatively easy labour. I had no urge to push and only really got on with it when they started muttering about the ventouse. Cue huge tear that two mws and 2 drs argued about (2nd or 3rd, nobody knows).
Hope number two just pops out in couple of months time!

JennerOSity · 14/08/2012 09:22

My dc2 is due in 2 months as well! This thread is making me feel very positive about it. :)

scarlettsmummy2 · 14/08/2012 09:22

Ten minutes! Back came out very bruised as she came down the birth canal so fast.
