They are worse for the first day or two. But I made sure I took the max dosage of paracetomol and nurofen regularly for those first few days, and the pains were ok.

Don't wait for them to start before you take the pain relief - be prepared and take them regularly to start off with and you'll be fine (I've had 3 DCs btw).

NeedlesCuties · 19/05/2012 22:11

How long do they last for?

I'm due DC2 in August and a bit Confused about afterpains.

NinthWave · 19/05/2012 22:11

Mine were much, much worse - I ended up taking cocodamol for them (okayed with with MW first)

NinthWave · 19/05/2012 22:12

Mine lasted about 3 days Needles

heliumballoon · 19/05/2012 22:15

I took ibuprofen and paracetemol regularly for a few days, to get me through the pain of afterpains, stitches and breastfeeding. Take your own to hospital as it's not always easy to get hold of, even if you only need it in over-the-counter quantities.

AmberLeaf · 19/05/2012 22:17

Deffo get worse each time.

Sorry!

smokeybacon · 19/05/2012 22:17

Yep. 2nd time round they were awful. Was in hospital and so bad had to ask for pain killers. Barely noticed them with number one. Sorry, OP. Be prepared!

lindsell · 19/05/2012 22:18

Mine were much worse, particularly while bfing, felt like contractions all over again. mw gave me co-dryamol for them which took the edge off. They were v frequent (every bf which was hourly and sometimes in between) for the first 3-4 days and then more infrequent for the next few days, was still having them a week later but then they tailed off.

HappyAsEyeAm · 19/05/2012 22:18

I had dreadful after pains with DC1. I had none at all after DC2 - sounds weird, I know. Its actually more of a concern that I haven't had any second time round, as when I did have them, at least I knew that everything was shrinking back as it should, despite it hurting like hell.

Badgerina · 20/05/2012 09:48

Mine were terrible after DS1. I'm also terrified of them being worse this time around Sad I've been trying to remind myself that my powerful uterus and those pains were the reason I completely stopped all post-birth bleeding after only 2 weeks Grin

Flisspaps · 20/05/2012 10:41

I had almost none.

Firawla · 20/05/2012 10:43

dont remember mine being too bad for 2nd, but for the 3rd they were awful

fuzzpig · 20/05/2012 10:48

Mine were worse, definitely. Although it wasn't so much after pains (ie the womb itself contracting back into its proper size) - for me, after both DCs, it was the ligaments that caused more problems (that's what the doctors said anyway - it'd given me trouble during pregnancy too).

What helped though? The TENS machine! So glad I kept it for an extra week :o

SmallShips · 20/05/2012 12:01

With my 2nd they were awful. I cried Blush.

I was all prepared with my 3rd, got prescription drugs from my GP but I didn't get after pains at all Hmm

TessTosterone · 20/05/2012 12:04

Worse each time much manageable after 2nd. Recently had 4th baby and omg that was agony.

DeterminedandSpecialMum · 20/05/2012 12:06

Worse with DD2 - However, was kept topped up with Paracetomal whilst in hospital for 3 days post birth (DD was in SCBU) so didn't seem that bad.

McKayz · 20/05/2012 12:10

Mine were horrible. I'm dreading them with DC3 due in 4 weeks.

Astr0naut · 20/05/2012 12:18

Worse, but I didn't have any first time round.

Breastfeeding hurts again too, no one told me that. I thought it'd be a piece of piss second time.

Yes, mine were much worse with DC2, I can only remember mild discomfort with DC1.

They lasted about 3 days and MWs confirmed they got worse with each baby Grin

pumpkinsweetie · 20/05/2012 13:14

I only got them with dc3 & dc4, with dc4 they were unbearable especially when i tried to bf, hence one of the reasons i gave up i was in agony.
It felt almost like giving birth again and it lasted 5 days, i think it gets worse after 3dcsSad

AdiVic · 20/05/2012 13:22

Hello - I had 2nd baby 4 days ago, and was not aware pains could be worse. As a result perhaps not expecting them to be, mine have been uncomfortable at worst. I have taken paracetamol twice. Totally gone now:) They were annoying, but really not that bad - suppose everyone differs.

Lunarlyte · 20/05/2012 16:56

I had a VB with DD1 and ELCS with DD2. Adterpains second time around were worse after the second birth and whilst breastfeeding. I felt the contractions 2nd time even when not breastfeeding (I mean, even when she wasnt at my breast). It eased after 5-7 days, but was more intense than first time around. No real biggie, tho xx

RandomMess · 20/05/2012 16:59

None with the first
Utterly horrendous with the 2nd - was sobbing and screaming (she was a BIG 10lb6oz though and didn't get to empty my bladder for ages after giving birth due to midwife failure!)
Nowhere near that bad with 3rd & 4th
