If your DC1 was 8lbs 13 (or similar), what was DC2?

I know that there's no science to this but I'm just curious as I'm re-packing my hospital bag & trying to work out what size babygros I'll actually need. With DD, I took in tiny baby ones & new born ones as DP & I are on the shorter side & no one in the family had ever had a baby bigger than 7lbs 7oz. DD (born at 40+15) ended up being 8lbs 13, squeezed into the newborn babygros & the tiny baby ones are now being used by DD as doll's clothes.

DS was due on Friday & is showing no signs of making an appearance any time soon. I've put on about the same amount of weight as last time, my bump measures normally but I have had a couple of comments from MW/GP of "oooh, he's a big lad". At the moment, I have a couple of up to 9lbs babygros & a couple of up to 10lb babygros in the bag but am now looking at the up to 14lb ones nervously. I won't need the latter, will I?!!

My DS was 9lb and went straight into 0-3 month baby grows missing the newborn ones hth

debka · 15/05/2012 13:23

DD1 8lb11.

DD2 10lb6 and only just fitted the 0-3mo babygrows.

Sorry Grin

(I did have GD though)

Hassled · 15/05/2012 13:23

If it were the 14lb mark they'd have warned you, would't they? May well be a bigger baby - but 14lbs is a lot bigger. My second was smaller than my first, but then she was the only girl (and am I right in thinking they tend to be smaller at birth?) - the two subsequent boys were larger than DS1.

addictediam · 15/05/2012 13:24

Well...dd1 was 8.3 lots of mw and Dr kept saying dd2 was big and well she was a whopping 10.9!!

My bump was tiny, measuring slightly small in fact, so I wouldn't count on that as an indicator.

wonderwooman · 15/05/2012 13:25

DC1 was 9.11 (40+10) & we went straight into 0-3 months. DC2 was 8.6 (EDD!) & we had some great use then for all those newborn babygros/vests that DC1 didn't get to wear. DC3 was 10lbs (40+7).

devilsadvocaat · 15/05/2012 13:27

Ds1 8 13
Ds2 9 02

Straight into 0 to 3 :)

devilsadvocaat · 15/05/2012 13:28

Ds1 39 +5
Ds2 38 weeks

thisisyesterday · 15/05/2012 13:28

i had a 9lb1, 9lb 5 and 9lb 11

the first 2 wore newborn size stuff for a few weeks at least. only ds3 went straight into 0-3

thisisyesterday · 15/05/2012 13:28

although saying that. we had quite a few newborn things that said up to 10lb on them, so i think it depends where you buy from!

WhispersOfWickedness · 15/05/2012 13:30

Well, DS was a smidge smaller at 8lb 8oz. DD was also 8lb 8oz when she was born 20 months later! However, even though they were the same weight born (don't know about length as no-one bothered to measure DS until he was 12 days old Hmm), DD fitted into newborn clothes (briefly) whereas DS never did as he had quite 'sturdy' shoulders and whacking great feet. So, what I am trying to say is that the weight might not be relevant anyway as they might have completely different body shapes so fit into different sizes. I would say though that second babies tend to be heavier than first babies and that boys generally weigh more than girls, so I would say that the likelihood is that your DS will be bigger than your DD Smile
Please come back and update us when he does make an appearance Grin And good luck, hope the birth goes well Smile

BeaWheesht · 15/05/2012 13:30

ds - 8lb 11
dd - 9lb 4

luckysocks · 15/05/2012 13:30

DS was 9lb-ish (terrible that I can't remember exactly) and a long baby who then put on weight fast - he went straight into 0-3 and then into 3 months before v long.

I've bought a few 1 month sizes this time thinking girl=smaller, but my bump measurements certainly don't suggest that... wishing I'd just bought them all in the bigger size!

jeee · 15/05/2012 13:31

DC1 was 8 lb 14 - DC2 was a runt at 7 lb 13. I looked at him, and said "oh, he's small."

My next two were strapping nine-pounders.

lynniep · 15/05/2012 13:32

DS1 8lb 2oz
DS2 10lb 3oz

Im not plannign on a third!

Fillybuster · 15/05/2012 13:32

There's no science, but:

dc1 8lb 11oz (induced, 12 days overdue)
dc2 8lb 9oz (came on their own, 5 days overdue)
dc3 9lbs 3oz (on their own, 13 days late....)

So on that basis, just the normal 'newborn' stuff would be fine.

But my friend had:
dc1 10lbs 6oz
dc2 6lbs 10oz
(which at least is easy to remember)

More importantly, make sure you pack enough....I remember washing out dc2's gros in the middle of the night by hand as she kept on soaking herself with poo and I hadn't expected to have to stay in overnight!

Good luck :)

bibbitybobbitybunny · 15/05/2012 13:33

I think most, but obviously not all, second babies are a little larger.

My second was 3oz lighter than my first but was born at nearly 2 weeks earlier gestation.

Ambrosius · 15/05/2012 13:34

Ds was 10lb9 and wore newborn babygrows for at least 3 weeks...

wonkylegs · 15/05/2012 13:35

I've only got one but I'm one of four kids
Dc 1 -7lb
Dc 2 - 10lb2
Dc 3 - 8lb9
Dc 4 - 6lb1
We're all fairly small adults now

Kveta · 15/05/2012 13:39

DC1 was 8lb 15.5oz. (born at 40+6)
DC2 is predicted to be a similar size and will be encouraged out at 41 weeks if she hasn't put in an appearance by then! I have packed newborn and up to 1 month clothes for her (M+S sizes) as DS never wore newborn, but went straight in to up to 1 month and 0-3 month clothes.

My mum gave me a babygro I had worn that was supposed to be 0-3 months though when DS was about 4 weeks old, and we really struggled to get him into it because he was so long compared to a baby me. So I think baby length is as important as weight in the clothing sizes!

Murtette · 15/05/2012 13:42

I can't say any of these "statistics" are cheering me up! DD got well & truly wedged & was a forceps delivery whilst being prepped for a EMCS. I'm still hoping this one will just pop out with a couple of pushes...

PestoPenguin · 15/05/2012 13:46

DCs 1 & 2 were the same weight. DC3 was 1lb heavier. 1 & 3 were over a week past EDD, number 2 was early.

NorkyButNice · 15/05/2012 13:47

Ds1 8lb 13oz
Ds2 11lb 3oz

Sorry! The labour was great though, 3 hours from first contraction to him coming out and I used the water pool for pain relief.

He went straight into 3-6 month clothes pretty much as he was really long.

Good luck!

Clarabumps · 15/05/2012 13:49

DS1 2 days overdue. 8lbs 12oz
DS2 2 days overdue 7lbs 10oz and literally just popped out...It was a LOT easier the second time and had no stitches.

debka · 15/05/2012 13:51

DD2 (10lb6) just popped out. No tears, grazes or interventions :)

YoullLaughAboutItOneDay · 15/05/2012 13:55

Murtette-I'll try and cheer you up a bit. First was 9lb and forceps as wedged and in distress. Second was 8lb 2 and shot out like a speeding bullet in the birth pool. A year in, she's still a good deal smaller than her sister was at the same age.
