Second Baby - Early or Late?

tinyfeet · 14/10/2003 17:02

Hi - there are lots of threads on second labours -seems the unanimous comments are that the second labours are easier and shorter than first ones. There doesn't seem to be any threads on whether the second baby came early or late or on-time? I'm hoping my second will be late, but was wondering if that's unlikely with the second baby.

Would also appreciate comments on whether your first was early or late. Since my first was very late (40 wks + 8 days), my doctor indicated that my second might also be late, but someone else told me that second (and 3rd, 4th) babies are usually on-time or early.

Both my first and second started at 1.50 in the morning at exactly 39 weeks. When it came to number three I was sat up in bed at 1.50 in the morning waiting and telling it that it was time to start. He ignored me (nothing changed there!) and put his appearance in at 11.30pm on 39 weeks and 6 days.

1st arrived bang on due date, 2nd was 11 days early. Hoping this one will be a couple of weeks early. Feel like I'm gonna pop at any minute (4 weeks to go)

Just out of interest, why are you hoping it will be late? Surely 99% of women hope it'll be early??

Oakmaiden · 14/10/2003 17:51

First baby 4 days late. Second baby 2 days late so far - but still no sign of it arriving. I was hoping it would be a couple of days early, but no. sigh. Still, got another 48 hours for it to be the same gestation as the first.

Good Luck oakmaiden

tinyfeet · 14/10/2003 18:29

Podmog - blimey! 16 days late! I should only be so lucky.
Monkey - to answer your question, I'm due on Christmas day. Don't want baby to feel like she's not getting proper birthday celebration due to Christmas holiday, so hoping she'll be born in early January. I know, it's silly. .

tinyfeet · 14/10/2003 18:53

Thanks, Pupuce. Are you a doula? I recall seeing that you assisted in someone's delivery recently. I figure you know what the 2nd child statistics are then, being in the business

Ds1 - 7 days late
DS2 - on time

Ds2 delivery - just as long as DS1 but hey I'm the exception that proves the rule

Loobie · 14/10/2003 19:17

1st Ds 1 two weeks early labour lasted 4 hours,2nd ds 2 three weeks early labour lasted 11 hours and finally no.3 dd 2weeks early labour lasted 5 hours.

polly28 · 14/10/2003 19:31

DD 15days late induced 1st baby
DS 14days late induced

my dd was born on new years eve, think now it would have been better to have a birthday in january because everyone is always preoccupied on NYeve. However she'll always have a party to go to!

WideWebWitch · 14/10/2003 19:38

Ooh, great thread! I'm dreaming of my second coming 3 weeks early at 37 weeks so I get it over with. Ds was 39+6, so 1 day early though so I bet I have to wait this time too. Good luck Oakmaiden. Podmog, 12 MINUTES?! Blimey! Kaz, don't tell me stuff like that about your second not being quicker - I'd like a mild backache followed by something that feels like indigestion, followed by a baby. All within about 2 hours if pos. (In my dreams, I know

WideWebWitch · 14/10/2003 19:39

Oh no, and you Loobie!

pupuce · 14/10/2003 19:53

Hi Tinyfeet

Yes I am a doula.
I didn't assist anyone's delivery.... I was priviledge to be present at Pie's latest birth. She gave birth, I watched
Yes I was her doula.

It is one of my pet peeves (but not having a go at you personally) when I hear women say : The MW or my husband delivered my baby.
Hang on..... YOU GAVE BIRTH! and if no one had been there you would have given birth too. They were there to assist you... not deliver you

Loobie · 14/10/2003 20:03

WWW my dd was born at 7.05am but the mw examined me at 7.00am and said i was 5cm dilated gave me a diamorphine injection then i pushed out dd and the diamorph hadn't even kicked in.LOL,the mw was in the process of setting up an epidural for ds 2 birth when he decided to arrived one push and his head crowned,he delivered from head to foot on the second push,so my children like to arrive quickly, thank goodness.

Oakmaiden · 14/10/2003 20:03

Makes it sound like a bunch of flowers, "delivering" babies, doesn't it???? Far prefer to attend a birth . Mind you, I always say that one of the most important parts of a midwife's job is making sure the baby doesn't hit the floor.... (Which is sort of a joke, but not completely. there are more important bits, I suppose, but this one is important too!)

Gods, I seem to be rattling on in a very off topic fashion tonight. I have finally gone completely mad.

batey · 14/10/2003 20:07

dd1 40+5,dd2 bang on her due date. the one and only time my body has ever done anything when it was supposed to!

It does look so far, from this thread that 2nd ones are arriving earlier?

Dd1 was also heavier than dd2.
