We camped last weekend and the nights were freezing (frost on the tent one morning!)
At least one hot water bottle each.
Wind up torches(service stations often have them cheap)
A flask to put boiling water in at night for a hot drink first thing
A football
A cricket bat and a tennis ball to play French cricket
A frisbee
More warm clothes than you think you need.
We have a little hurricane lamp that burns safely all night and stops the tent being pitch black - our children get a bit spooked sometimes if it's too dark.
Corkscrew
Plain biscuits and fruit in case people are starving before the cafe opens

If you haven;'t left don't worry insrtead of ridiculing you, campers love to help a first timer.

LAst time we went to IoW, we had troubloe with the boys whilst pitching (long journey etc) and someone came over with a barbecue and made them hot dogs . But on another day it was ds3's birthday so we had a tea party at the tent for all the kids they'd been playing with.

the community is possible one of the best things about camping
