Elle: In support of breastfeeding
Supermodel Elle Macpherson has challenged hospitals to do more to help women breastfeed successfully.
The Australian said it was "incredible" that there was not one hospital in London with a "baby friendly" award.

These are given to hospitals which adhere to Unicef/WHO recognised best practice in the care of breastfeeding mothers and babies.

Ms Macpherson, Unicef's "baby friendly ambassador", visited a women's centre in Whitechapel, east London, and said: "I find it incredible that in the whole of this capital, which counts some of the best teaching hospitals in the world, there isn't a single baby friendly hospital.
"I find it shocking that London women have no choice over where to go to receive good care."

Ms Macpherson said she breast-fed her two sons for six months, and knew how important breastfeeding was.

"The challenge is to build on individual energies and positive efforts going on around the capital and build a baby friendly London," she said.

"I challenge the 31 hospitals and five strategic health authorities to work to become baby friendly.

"I urge mothers, fathers and parents-to-be to write to the chief executives of hospitals and call on them to embark on a baby friendly road."

Ms Macpherson, wearing an olive green jacket, skin-tight white trousers and large sunglasses, met mothers and support workers from the local community during her visit to the Jagonari women's centre.

Good on her. So many celebs are pictured with a trolley of freebie formula - it's nice to hear one speaking positively about breastfeeding.

The hospital in which I had DS said that they couldn't be baby friendly as a large proportion of women who gave birth there were Muslim, so wouldn't breastfeed (I know they often won't give colostrum, but wtf - I know they do!). Only 54% of women were breastfeeding on discharge from Hillingdon when I had DS - I hope that it's higher now (I went back when DS was about 5 months old and told them their breastfeeding support was bloody useless - they told me they had plenty of posters up...then agreed that wasn't enough and said they'd address it), but I am not sure it will be

Yes, it's a choice, but when 90-something per cent of women say they wish they'd continued to breastfeed longer than they managed, something's wrong.

I'm not in that 90% - I wish I hadn't tried as long as I did. Sooo many problems but that was to do with poor nursing staff not BF-ing itself.

I will not BF my second child whenever it comes along. DD was BF for about 10 days - not properly though and she is perfectly healthy through the bottle. No allergies - perfectly good immune system - in fact she has been a lot less ill than other kids who I know were BF.

What about my comment about the gov trying to compete with huge multinational companies? Dont see many complaints there!

I like Elle Macpherson a lot. She can't act for toffee and clearly she's far too good-looking for a normal human being but she usually comes across as pretty down-to-earth and sensible. Nice bras, too.

Great to see she's supporting this and getting the lamentable state of breastfeeding support into the headlines.

Oooh, I was at this event!

She didn't look outrageously super-modelish. She looked pretty, but she wasn't overdressed for the event. She spoke pretty well, and seemed very nice.

She's quite startlingly good looking in person (shocker). Thin and tall, as you'd expect.

She spoke a bit about her experiences breastfeeding, she had her kids in an English hospital.

Have you seen the photo's of EM in her bf bras - my boobs were that big when I was 10! Why don't they do nursing bras in larger sizes - mine went up to a whopping J cup - as you can imagine the range was pretty rank.

However, gold star to EM for publicising the crappiness of support for bf in this country (from a mn who lasted 10 weeks )

How do people have non-huge boobs when bfing? A friend of mine's boobs just look normal.
