Oh yes, and even worse when they are health professionals.
Honestly, the crap that has been reported on here over the years defies belief.

LucyJones · 19/03/2008 20:27

why do people feel the need to advise when it hasn't been asked for anyway....
my mother is like this too ... grr

milkgoddess · 19/03/2008 20:28

i wouldn't mind so much if
a. the person had at least some idea of what they where talking about

or
b. if they where asked to give advice.

in my mothers case its neither

totally agree MD, im shocked and horrified by alot of the hcp advice sen on here and mainly saddend

My mil was an "expert" too, despite never having put her kids anywhere near her chest! Did not help. Still about it 2 years on...

moondog · 19/03/2008 20:29

What did she say Chicky?

PotPourri · 19/03/2008 20:31

I think the same applies to anything to do with fertility, childbirth, childrearing....

StripeyMama · 19/03/2008 20:32

oooh exMIL used to do this.

According to her my boobs are too small to nourish a baby adequately. God only knows why she didn't manage to bf if big boobs are useful - hers are round her knees.

[bitchy]

moondog · 19/03/2008 20:34

I would be utterly outraged at the thought of my MIL commenting on the size of my tits.
Honestly-!!!!

chickytwotimes · 19/03/2008 20:35

"ooh, don't feed on demand - every four hours only"
"He's only using you as a comforter after 10 minutes."
"If he wakes in the night, give him water. Then he'll learn not to wake up" (this is a new born!)

and my favourite: "Just give him a bottle - it's better anyway." (how? why?)

Sadly, I only managed 2 wks bfing. Lack of support didn't help...

StripeyMama · 19/03/2008 20:35

I know!

The cheek.

I was restrained though and didn't make any of the comments that were just there on the tip of my tongue.

chickytwotimes · 19/03/2008 20:35

I didn't know about mn then, btw!

milkgoddess · 19/03/2008 21:04

chicky, i know how you feel, what is it with them saying, only feed evry four hours grrrr

OP posts:
constancereader · 19/03/2008 21:05

I bet they don't go for four hours without even a drink.

Walnutshell · 19/03/2008 21:06

my modest offerings have been feeding ds for 2 years and 5 months so size certainly does NOT matter in this case

constancereader · 19/03/2008 21:09

lol Walnutshell - mine are massive and I had terrible trouble bf and only managed to mix feed in the end.

Walnutshell · 19/03/2008 21:10

my mum and mil (and dad and fil) have been nothing but +ve about bf'ing but I've heard a few female peers 'advise' that "carry on if you want to but of course he doesn't need bf at his age" or "well, he is just comfort feeding" wtf is that about anyway? who doesn't comfort their child (not to mention the benefits) etc etc

peanutbear · 19/03/2008 21:12

my friend said today that with the size of my tits they were surprised my children didnt have stretch marks around there mouth!!!!!

No she didnt BF

Walnutshell · 19/03/2008 21:12

sorry constance, I didn't mean to sound flippant - I realise women of all shapes and sizes have various experiences. It's just that it can be presumed that small boobs are less, erm, milkworthy!

sorry you had trouble

constancereader · 19/03/2008 21:14

God no - I thought it was funny! You didn't offend me in the slightest.

Next time will be better - I know about Mumsnet now!

Walnutshell · 19/03/2008 21:15

peanutbear - what did she say after you had whupped her round the head?

Walnutshell · 19/03/2008 21:16

constancereader (always ponder your MN name) -

moondog · 19/03/2008 21:17

Walnut, did you ever track down 'Politics of Breastfeeding'?

constancereader · 19/03/2008 21:17

it's because I was like constant reader - always reading and never posting. Only to begin with though...

Walnutshell · 19/03/2008 21:20

moondog - yep, I finally (recently) did! Somehow I have acquired a pile of Books Worth Reading which I am ploughing through steadily (rather than speedily as pre-ds) but it is definitely there. I think there is a new edition out this year??? (

aha constanceposter, I see!

constancereader · 19/03/2008 21:22

I may change my name.
