What did you think of it.

(Yes,I have a permanent pile of Improving Tomes by my bed!)

Lucy10 · 19/03/2008 21:35

The doctor at our baby clinic told me there is only 15 minutes of milk in each breast and anything after that is just comfort. I soon learned to disregard anything he said!

moondog · 19/03/2008 21:40

Jesus,wot an arse.

Walnutshell · 19/03/2008 21:56

Lucy10 - total idiot. Wrong too.

Moon - have read intro and hooked but being strict about books I have borrowed/bought and 'must' read so it is 3rd one down (or thereabouts)...

I do love a good pile of improving tomes. What's in yours?

moondog · 19/03/2008 21:58

Lots of depressing things about how supermarkets are strangling food producers, loads of course books for MSc and the Hstory of Britain (re-issued 50s school textbook)

And you?

Walnutshell · 19/03/2008 22:04

Am into my exploring religion/spirituality phase so Tolstoy, CS Lewis, Richard Dawkins (!) and Tom Wright alongside Catcher in the rye, Breakfast at Tiffany's and I'm with the band.

History of Brit stuff sounds good - feel like that might be a gap in my education... there are so many

Sometimes I just want a good (aka crap) story from tesco's.

moondog · 19/03/2008 22:08

Blimey!

My friend brought me around a copy of Closer the other day when I emailed her about my joyless existence (work f/t, MSc, dh away. 2 small kids) Hilarious!

I'm getting to the stage (40) when i am worried about running out of time before reading all I should read. I've never read a Jane Austen. oh the shame!

Walnutshell · 19/03/2008 22:17

Fickin heck, how do you manage it all??? I know what you mean though, am getting desperate to mobilise my brain and mild panic at job prospects having never settled on a career and now in the gathering-moss corner of England, ie the SW

Jane Austen is overrated.

Walnutshell · 19/03/2008 22:18

PS Tolstoy - I am referring to "A Confession", an extremely thin tome rather than his weightier works - no chance!

moondog · 19/03/2008 22:24

Ha ha!
Reminds me of my purchase of War & peace for our stint in Russia.
Unread.

Walnutshell · 19/03/2008 22:31

bloody good doorstop though

sarahloumadam · 19/03/2008 22:33

The voice of experience who is my FIL (not only did he never breast-feed but none of his children were breast-fed) is constantly harping on about how restrictive it must be and how at least with a bottle you know how much they are getting. Wally.

chipmonkey · 19/03/2008 22:34

MIL was like this when I had ds1. My Dad was a big fan of breastfeeding and used to comment that MIL couldn't ever have bf, with her attitude and was surprised when I said she had.
When ds1 was 8 weeks old she rang me and during the conversation asked when ds1 was "due a feed" I said that he was "due a feed" the next time he wanted one!
MIL( pityingly): "Oh, are you still doing the demand feeding?"
Me ( in sheer frustration): "Yes, you have to feed then on demand or your milk supply doesn't increase!"
( Pause)
MIL: "Oh, maybe that's what happened to me, my milk dried up after 6 weeks"
Duh! So that's why I never took her advice!

moondog · 19/03/2008 22:35

'wally' is a term that needs resurrecting

Walnutshell · 19/03/2008 22:37

I think a lot of 50-somethings were fed duff (or little) advice re bf'ing and so struggle with the latest resurgence of encouragement to bf. It's very sad actually and a little leeway can be afforded.

sarahloumadam · 19/03/2008 22:38

He is also a berk . Oh my god, just googled berk to check spelling and its origins are . Lets stick to wally.

Walnutshell · 19/03/2008 22:39

The swearing part of my brain automatically interpreted 'wally' in this context as 'tw*t'. Thought that was more accurate.

moondog · 19/03/2008 22:41

Wally suggests amused and indulgent frustration though.
Perhaps 'twat' would be better?

sarahloumadam · 19/03/2008 22:42

Agree is sad that whole generation of women encouraged to be so regimental re feeding etc. The thought of making my DS wait for 4 hours is hilarious. He would be pulling out what little hair he has!

sarahloumadam · 19/03/2008 22:42

Twat it is.

moondog · 19/03/2008 22:44

A resounding vote for #twat' it is then.

Walnutshell · 19/03/2008 23:27

oh sarahlou, there was me thinking that at last I had encountered a true lady on MN

sarahloumadam · 20/03/2008 08:50

Oh I am a lady, I would never call him twat to his face

Lucy10 · 20/03/2008 11:17

When my mum gave birth to my older sister in 1974 in Yorkshire she was treated like royalty as she was the first breast feeding mother the'd had for about 20 years!

jetgirl · 20/03/2008 11:26

I am so lucky, my mum and MIL have never been anything but supportive, and my granny thinks I'm lucky to live in an age where it's accepted that breastmilk is both drink and food. I remember being that she had been told to give water at night, and to start weaning at 3 months! My dad's first food was bonemarrow broth!!!
