Fluconazole dosage advice please

I've had my second bout of thrush now for over a month. Third GP at my practice prescribed Fluconazole but only the 150mg loading dose so it hasn't improved. It is at best uncomfortable to feed and often agony for hours after. I've had my latch checked at our local Breaststart drop-in and it's fine.
So....my sis had bought Flucon in Cambodia and brought it back for me (genuine thing don't worry!) but it is in 200mg tablets. Easy to break in half but not so easy in quarters. So really my question is could I have a 200mg loading dose and then just one 100mg dose per day or will I have to chop them into 50mg pieces?
Thanks in advance.

Sorry, I am new to this...Just thought of something else fenny1...did you continue to treat your daughter whilst taking this? I am currently using Daktarin gel in my little boy's mouth which I don't really like doing as it has been over several weeks now.

Grapefruit seed extract from health shop.
Tell us more of this new magic cure!!!!

That looks worth a try and has the grapefruit (citrus) seed extract in too. Do use the liquid on your nipples aswell tho but watch out for it drying them out. Are you using Daktarin oral gel still as it's great for sore nipples. Have you tried nipple guards?

daktarin oral gel did nothing for my nipples and the delay is what made my thrush get really bad. i just started to put regular otc daktarin for athlete's foot on my nipple (!!) it worked better. however, i still think that the vast improvement has been putting diluted vinegar on them. I can't get rid of it on my nipples because dd has it in her mouth and I am struggling to rid her of it. Because the nipples are so dry then they are healing mine were cracking a lot. I got some lanisoh samples from the local surestart office and vinegar / air dry / lanisoh has got them to nearly normal.

Kiskidee - I reckon that the dilute vinegar does much the same as the Grapefruit Seed as they are both acid. I agree about the Daktarin but it does make a good moisturiser I found as did Kamillisan.
KZ - I really hope that you can get back to proper feeding soon. I do believe that I am now pain free so do persevere.

Sorry Kiskidee when I reread my post it sounded like I was dismissing the vinegar which wasn't what I meant at all. I think that the routine of drying acid and then something to remoisturize seems like the best cure - it seems to have worked for us anyway.
Good luck with clearing it in DDs mouth - do you think she needs the other active ingredient ie nystatin instead of miconazole (sp)?

OP posts:
kiskidee · 19/08/2006 21:40

LL, i do want to try nystatin. the pissin docs don't seem to 'get it' though. i am back on tues and speaking to one who i think is more of a listener down at my practice. wish me luck.

at the moment i am trying to put acidophilus in her mouth as recommended by dr jack newman. she knows when i am going to do it as she runs away. and she bites my finger really hard when i get it in her mouth hence i never spread it properly. its just granular, no taste as i checked to see if it was nasty. t

bh, i am even thinking of weaning her because there seems no end to this. she is 16 months old today and i was hoping to go for 2 yrs. its been at least 6 weeks now.

laundrylover · 19/08/2006 21:51

Nystatin drops were the first thing that the docs gave me so good luck.
It would be shame to wean her for this reason altho of course she would be fine at 16 months. It would be like the decision had been taken away from you eh?
can you mix the acidophilus with something maybe??

HI All

I hope you are all on the mend now. I am convinced I have thrush and instead of waiting 1 week to get a doctor's appt (!) I bought the over the counter dose of 150mg fluconazole.

Am hoping to see a private doc later to get full dose but am concerned as the pains have got so much worse since taking the pill. Has anybody else experienced this?

Thanks!!

laundrylover · 24/08/2006 15:04

Lex, the loading dose (which is what you got over the counter) shouldn't make the pains worse, but maybe the thrush is just getting worse. Are you using grapefruit seed/vinegar wash?? If not start today whilst you wait for your appt and remember that some GPs will not prescribe flucon so take the BFN printout with you in readiness....Hope you are on the mend soon.

Hi Kazbeth,

Have been in an internet free house for a few days so hope you are still watching this thread! I got the grapefruit seed extract from my independent health food shop. if you can't get it why not try the white vinegar...see LuluKidneyBean's post below.
Do persevere tho - pain free bfing does exist!!!

i've been on holiday and just before i left i saw a sensible gp. he gave me daktacort ointment(it is daktarin with hydrocortisone) he said the nipples were also inflamed that the thrush was so persistent. guess what! almost instant relief and improvement. you have to get daktacort on prescription. he's also given me nystatin drops which i will start soon and here is hoping that my dd will also clear up in her mouth so both of us can be free!

laundrylover · 02/09/2006 20:40

That's great news Kiskidee - I have my fingers crossed for you.
BTW, have worked out why it keeps returning - it's on my breast pump! Have been boiling for 20 mins but obviously this isn't enough so today have soaked everything in Milton.....will not use 'til I clear this up again tho.
How is everyone elase doing if you're still around???

OP posts:
kiskidee · 02/09/2006 20:59

i will not be pumping at work anymore but plan to pump once in the pm to get milk for 1 feed the next day. will be putting my pump in the dishwasher. her mouth is looking better. it means i don't have to stick my finger in and get it chomped. she even likes the taste of nystatin.

laundrylover · 02/09/2006 21:33

Kiskidee, watch out tho with your pump - I generally use the dishwasher or just hot wash it but boiled ot twice. Each time I use (not regulatly as no need) the thrush returned. It might be worth you getting some Milton and using it for pump and bottles just until you clear up the thrush as it def kills candida.
I'm not pushing sterilising in general as am very against it BTW!!
