Fluconazole dosage advice please

I've had my second bout of thrush now for over a month. Third GP at my practice prescribed Fluconazole but only the 150mg loading dose so it hasn't improved. It is at best uncomfortable to feed and often agony for hours after. I've had my latch checked at our local Breaststart drop-in and it's fine.
So....my sis had bought Flucon in Cambodia and brought it back for me (genuine thing don't worry!) but it is in 200mg tablets. Easy to break in half but not so easy in quarters. So really my question is could I have a 200mg loading dose and then just one 100mg dose per day or will I have to chop them into 50mg pieces?
Thanks in advance.

It's back!!! !!!!***
Well after that little bout of mastitis the thrush is back in my left boob. I didn't take any ABs just Ibruprofen but this is exactly how it flared up last time too.
Soooo....doesn't look like the Flucon has worked. Will try vinegar and grapefruit seed for a while.....

big improvement in nipples in last day or so. dd's mouth is also looking better. i have been using vinegar and water and alternating with daktarin cream on my nipples every hr or two. i am also feeding dd natural yoghurt as with ten teeth in her mouth she sure can bite when i apply the gel.

LuLuKidneyBean · 27/07/2006 22:47

i'm kiskidee by the way

laundrylover · 28/07/2006 22:01

Well done on nipple improvement!
What sort of vinegar do you use? I am using the grapefruit seed extract and also bought some Molkoson which is meant to be the bees knees for prebiotics but is the vilest thing I have EVER tasted and makes me gag even when I'm holding my nose!!!!

plain white vinegar bought at the supermarket. i diluted it about 1 to 4. as the nipple is healing they skin is dry and because it is thin, liable to crack which is why i have been putting daktarin too. i does sting to put this stuff on cracked nipple but not as badly as having said cracked nipple sucked. dd is finally starting to cooperate to let me rub the gel throughout her mouth - if she isn't too busy. so with that and yoghurt, maybe i will get rid of this damn thing.

What a pain that it came back so quickly Kayzed. Well my boobs are good right now - the grapefruit seed extract worked I think but made my nips so dry that they got sore so treated with Kamillisan and seem back to normal. Still not totally pain free but much better....
My friend had recurring thrush (fanny!!) and saw a naturopath in NZ who put her on a strict diet and treatment plan. She has been clear ever since and doesn't need to be very careful what she eats on the whole. Worth a try for you?
Hope you can sort that latch out too.Keep me updated!

So good to see I'm not the only thrush ridden person whose persevering with bf - though scream I'm going to stop at least once a day. Doctor for DD1 gave BFN dosage and it went, more or less, but for DS1 (4 weeks today) different doctor only gave daily dose, not loading dose - still have painful feeds now, but not as bad. Am hoping to get another dose tomorrow - though fear doctor will not want me to have it - any top tips on how to persuade - she's read the pamphlet and wasn't convinced last time.

EmmyLou · 16/08/2006 19:06

Haven't read whole thread - but anyone with thrush/ductal thrush has my heart felt sympathy. Excruciating pain, during latch on and for over an hour after each feed. Luckily my GP read the BFN printout and I had a big loading dose and I think, 2 weeks worth of fluconazole at a lower dose to follow. Had a second cycle of it too as the trush wasn't diagnosed eary enough and, as the BFN says, you may need a second lot if not caught early enough. (I was also given double dose of antibiotic by male GP who thought I had mastitis....this was my third baby - haven't been back to him since).

EmmyLou · 16/08/2006 19:08

Will give my excellent GP's name and practice address/number (is this allowed?)to anyone to give to their unresponsive GP if you think it might help....?

laundrylover · 16/08/2006 20:52

It does seem hard to convince some GPs - mine included! Obviously the Flucon didn't work for me but rather than take a second course i persevered with Grapefruit Seed Extract and nipple creams and I think it's more or less gone.
Do try and get the full course tho - if your GP won't give it then buy off the internet.
Good luck and keep us updated!

go to a walk in clinic somewhere else? ask to see a nurse at the practice who has breastfed? and take the notes along again.

laundrylover · 16/08/2006 21:06

Good idea re walk in clinic Kiskidee.
It's annoying that it's so hit and miss -I tried two docs at our practise before I got the loading dose. Then bought Flucon from Cambodia and went back to docs, saw a locum who was FAB and knew all about thrush and said keep going with the Grapefruit seed. Reckon he would've prescribed if I'd cried tho!!!

kiskidee · 17/08/2006 08:44

where did you get the grapefruit seed extract?

jackieom · 17/08/2006 13:51

Walked in and said 'my breasts still hurt' and she said 'lets prescribe more flucon' - got another 14 days worth! Wow! Guess she may have read up on it in interim. Anyhow, pain seems to be receding slightly today and have cut out sugar and down on bread etc. Now just need miracle cure for 2 kid that won't have afternoon nap. Haven't they read the Baby Whisperer? Supposed to be Me time now!

fenny1 · 17/08/2006 20:44

Sorry, haen't read whole thread so someone may have mentioned this already. I had 2 courses of Fluconozole adn my daughter had 2 courses of Nystatin. It didn't work. I took Gracie Mae to see a Cranial Osteopath and mentioned the Thrush, he gave me a number to ring of a company called Nutri and told me to get Caprylic Acid. It worked in days. I was about to give up on bf as I was sobbing with pain each feed, now its a walk in the park!

kiskidee · 17/08/2006 21:55

fenny, how old was your baby? mine has lots of teeth and i can't quite get my finger in properly to put medicine in my mouth as she bites down really hard. and where do i look for caprylic acid. i've never heard of it.

twoboys · 17/08/2006 22:02

I've also never heard of this and am trying to get. rid of thrush. Where did you get it from and what dosage is safe to use. I feel like I will try anything now..it has just gone on for soo long! Any help appreciated
