Did you lose weight while breastfeeding or after you stopped?

OP posts:
PiccadillyCircus · 02/01/2006 19:23

with ds it went gradually while breast feeding but finished off after I stopped (at 9 months).

DD is 15 weeks and having put on about 4.5 stone while pregant, I have got 1.5 stone to lose to get to pre-pregnancy weight (but not doing anything to lose it at the moment)

SKYLERtnightholynight · 02/01/2006 19:25

While breastfeeding both times but a lot more this time round with dd2. Weight went up again when I stopped last time though......

RosiePosie · 02/01/2006 19:27

Not until after I stopped. I didn't lose any weight at all for the whole 18 months I was bf and then lost a stone in the first month after I stopped, without dieting or doing any extra exercise.

HappyNewFrannyandZooey · 02/01/2006 19:28

Have lost loads while breastfeeding. I haven't stopped yet but would imagine the weight will creep back if I carry on eating as I do now

Lilliput · 02/01/2006 19:28

Initially I lost weight while breastfeeding, when the baby was feeding constantly but when the baby settled down and then went on to solids the weight loss stopped and I even put on a bit as I was still eating as though the baby was always feeding. Be careful of that!!

no idea not stopped yet
actually lost more when I started to cut down on the feeds

Frizbetheexpansionset · 02/01/2006 19:45

I lost it all when I stopped ok bar half a stone, that was pure chocolate

NotQuiteCockney · 02/01/2006 19:46

I never lose weight in the early days of bf. Whatever I weigh when I get out of hospital, that's my weight for the first 6-9 months of bf.

After that, the weight falls off. After DS1, I was 5 lbs down on my prepregnancy weight (which stayed off). After DS2, I'm so far about 5 lbs down on my pre-DS2-weight, so about 10lbs down overall.

No dieting, no special effort. I think it's the hassle of having them eat all my food, and not being able to eat rubbish, as I don't want to give them any. I'm sure the continued BF doesn't hurt.

(Before anyone gets all at me, I'm still a big girl, just slightly less big than I was before I started having babies.)

harpsichordcarrier · 02/01/2006 19:47

I do get an raging appetite for sweet things in the early days of bf though. I think that is pretty common

dinny · 02/01/2006 19:48

so, did everyone's boobs shrink? and tummies magically disappear?

hoxtonchick · 02/01/2006 19:49

i am losing weight very gradually whilst still feeding dd. didn't at with ds, but lost quite a lot quite quickly when i stopped. she's 6 months now & just started solids, though isn't bf noticably less. i suspect i'd lose weight quite rapidly if i stopped eating crap though....

NotQuiteCockney · 02/01/2006 19:50

My tummy only went down with loads of Tae Bo and Pilates. Which I haven't done this time.

Boobs shrunk though, thankfully.

NewYearsRacerLution · 02/01/2006 19:54

Bah, a bit disappointed not to have lost it during and am holding out hope on it happening afterwards, though now have got past first 5 or 6 months have no clue when I'll stop so it could be a while! However, at least I have the excuse now that lots of people keep quite a bit of 'baby' weight until afterwards. Puts the pressure on to lose it when I do stop though - LOL you can't win!!!

Twiglett · 02/01/2006 19:55

with DS yes to whilst bf

with DD neither

It made no difference in my case. I was back in my old clothes w/i three weeks w/both DDs - DD1 formula fed; DD2 bf'd.

suzi2 · 02/01/2006 20:31

I am back to my pre pregnancy weight and DS is 5 months. Although I still have a couple of stone of weight to go before I'm ideal. I think I would have lost the weight anyway, whether breastfeeding or not. I was told that breastfeeding uses 500 kcals a day. But have since been told that recent research suggests it doesn't as your metabolism slows down to compensate. Hence many women find they lose weight after they stop breastfeeding when the metabolism speeds up again.

beansontoast · 02/01/2006 20:44

it was ages ago for me,but this is a poll...so

very steady and gradual weight loss over about 18mnths (11-12 months of b/feeding]

am a slightly different shape now though

Wallace · 02/01/2006 20:48

lost some gradually whilst breastfeeding, then quickly when I stopped

Tinker · 02/01/2006 20:49

Still losing weight, baby 7 months old. Am lighter than pre=pregnancy.

hunkermunker · 02/01/2006 20:50
