Did you lose weight while breastfeeding or after you stopped?

OP posts:

Ooh I am glad about people saying the weight came off after stopping bf. Weight fell off me first 4 weeks after birth but then stopped. Cannot shift that last 1/2 stone no matter what I do.
Mind, the constant snacking may have something to do with it

sevensuzyswongsaswimming · 03/01/2006 12:46

me too
I stopped after 2 years, 1 year of just a night feed, and I lost 6 lbs immediately
YIPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

I'm a stone lighter than I have been in almost a decade. Don't know if it's from bf (though he's a BIG eater) or from giving up so much as it upsets his tummy! all I know is I don't want to go back to my pre-preggers weight!

mojomummy · 03/01/2006 13:23

lost about 1.5 stone (out of 2.5lb gain) in first 10days. Then the excess 9-11 lbs hung around for 7+ plus months. Had the incentive of going on summer hols, so ate 'normally' & lost half a stone in less than a week Was on 2 good bf's a day then.

Started to feel a bit flabby when I gave up the bf, but eating carefully sorted that out.

Earlybird · 03/01/2006 13:23

Lost weight while breastfeeding, then put it back on when I stopped as I didn't modify my eating habits.

I am now 2 stone heavier than I was pre dd. Part of that is that I'm no longer in an office so food is available 24 hours a day and I snack far too much. Part of it is that, while I walk absolutely everywhere, I'm no longer doing Pilates 3x per week. And lastly, I'm now at the age where everyone says your metabolism slows anyway so weight is much harder to shift.

Couldn't lose an ounce while feeding even on Weightwatchers. When DS2 went onto solids and I cut down on the feeds, I lost half a stone wthout trying and then lost another stone in 3 months when I gave up feeding all together.

DingDongMerrilyOnHIGHLANDER · 03/01/2006 14:01

I lost a stone of the pre-pregnancy weight whilst BF (so 3 stone in total).

pooka · 03/01/2006 14:45

Put on about 4 stones each time. Lost lots of weight incredibly quickly both times but still retained about a stone until gave up feeding dd. Cna't say I really made much effort dieting though We shall see whether the stone I'm hanging onto now will disappear (maybe if I stop eating the chocolate) before I stop feeding ds in about 9 months.

TheholyGHOSTY · 04/01/2006 05:15

Lost weight within weeks of stopping. I put on 4 stone during my pregnancy with DD then lost 2 immediately (that was the 'baby' weight obviously) ...
Lost about 1/2 stone in the next 10 months and then lost 1.5 stone within 2 months of stopping bfing.

NotAcow · 04/01/2006 08:25

dont actually weigh myself, well, very rarely. dont even have scales to stress myself out with, but; lost pretty much all the weight and was back in pre-preg jeans within a fortnight both times, prob due to bf'ing, and then continued losing weight slowly while bf'ing for next /6 months. hurrah! probably crept up and down a bit, but like i say, i dont measure it so...

looked like crap in the nud tho as tummy was all squishy and stretchmarked, but not really bothered. just got longer tops!

and sadly the boobs did go back to being the 'fried eggs' i was teased for at school
i love boobs. best thing about having babies i reckon that and the baby of course!!

lazycow · 04/01/2006 10:14

I put on 3 stone while pregnant though more than 2 stone of that was in the last 2 months. I was back to my pre-pregnancy weight within 6 weeks of the birth

HOWEVER I was overweight to begin with so although I lost the pregnancy weight I was still overweight.

I had PPD and really only ate what my dh gave me when breastfeeding in the first few weeks (though he did feed me very well). The weight just seemed to drop off. Then we went to the U.S.A for 6 months when ds was 10 weeks old and I came back 2 stone heavier despite breastfeeding -sigh!!.

So for me it wasn't pregnancy that made me this big but loneliness in the U.S.A. and eating my own weight in chocolate and cake to try and make up for it -
.

TuttiFrutti · 04/01/2006 12:27

I put on 4 stone when pregnant and only lost 2 of that while breastfeeding. I still got people asking when my baby was due for 3 months afterwards!

Since stopping bf, I have lost a stone. Think this is because bf made me really hungry, a bit like pregnancy did.

poppiesinaline · 04/01/2006 12:36

Haven't read all thread but am probably going to make everyone grumble.

One of reasons I stopped bf was because I lost so much weight. Lost one stone in 2 weeks! Stopped bf, stopped losing weight. But then I have trouble keeping my weight on.

Skips off to eat more biscuits ......

Eulalia · 04/01/2006 13:07

Yes, quite gradual all times, 2nd time was a bit longer, took about 5 months to get back to normal weight but was only carrying a few extra pounds. I think your body likes to keep a bit extra in store. This time (3rd time) have lost it quicker due to having 3 kids to run after. Can't say about stopping as I've been doing it continuously for 6.5 years!

Piffle · 04/01/2006 13:21

with ds it was quick as he ate like a starved elephant plus I was broke and walked everywhere and ate on a really tight budget
With dd I was better off, with a car and she ate dainty little feeds every 4 hours, so it took longer....

NotAcow · 04/01/2006 14:11

Yes poppies, know what you mean. am actually thinner now (apart from massive bump - due my third on 23rd this mth) than i was before i started having kids 3 yrs ago. every1 in my family is pretty lean tho.

I have lost my pregnancy weight whilst breastfeeding, my ds is 14 weeks old.

Going to start to lose the couple of stone i should have lost ages ago though.

tigerpaws · 04/01/2006 21:49

I lost some while feeding but was amazed at how much more seemed to fall off without trying when I stopped at 6 months. I got heavy night sweats etc. as all the hormones were changing again.

nanneh · 05/01/2006 10:19

I lost almost all the weight I had gained in the first few weeks after birth while breastfeeding.

Unfortunately, I have regained quite alot although I am still bf my 18 month old. But I don't think it has anything to do with the fact that I am still bf - it has a lot to do with bad eating habits, being at home in front of the fridge all the time, etc.

I found it much easier to lose weight when I was at work.

I have just been to a ww meeting last night and need to lose about 2 stone to be happy again !!

curlywhirly · 05/01/2006 12:46

Lost loads of weight breastfeeding with both babies. First time very dramatic as breastfed for a year and went down to the weight I had been when i was a teenager and lost all my cellulite (even better). Second time round a bit less dramatic but still impressive. The more dramatic weight loss came after I'd been breastfeeding for about 5 or 6 months and I found both times that it took me 6 months or me to shift the baby weight. I know some people shed it all in a few weeks but they tend to be younger mums (i was in my mid thirties) or didn't put on much in the first pace.

Pagan · 05/01/2006 16:50

Lost more than I bargained for with both and ended up looking like a waif. Was never fat but dropped to 8 stones (I'm 5 ft 8) and literally half my hair fell out. I stopped when DS was 6 months for my own sake

TaiTai · 05/01/2006 20:28

Did I lose weight while breastfeeding? Ha! Did I f*ck! No, stayed lardy post-pregnancy self. Even when cut down on sugary food and did lots of non-impact exercise, the weight didn't shift when breastfeeding. I suppose the proviso to that is that after being in hospital for a week with DD, the first week I was home I lost half a stone in thatt week. I put that down to losing excess fluid though, but bf might have helped. I didn't put on that much weight when pregnant really, but I was overweight to start with and I'm finding it really difficult to lose. After having been the type who puts excess weight on their stomach and breasts, after pregnancy I have larger hips (boo). And a very saggy stomach that hangs over my emergency C-Section scar. Nice.

TaiTai · 05/01/2006 20:30

Should add that I bf for just under six months, and dd is now ten months. My friend told me that when bf women often store excess fat for fuel reserves, and that really does seem to have been the case for me because I did try to lose weight with healthy eating and exercise while bf.
