Bare breasts in public

Do you feel it is acceptable to bare your whole breast while breastfeeding in public.

I remember getting on a bus in summer and somehow was shocked to see that a lady on the bus had slipped off her spaghetti strap and lowered top to breastfeed her baby. I was surprised that i felt disgusted by it. surely she is feeding the baby. Couldnt she have lifted up the top instead? the teenage boys behind me were more into the huge breasts and it started to look like soft porn.

havent read the whole thread but did you know you can be fined £2500 for stopping a woman breastfeeding in public in scotland?

for example if you were a shop owner or a customer in a cafe, you cannot complain or likewise

very proud of my country on this fact

colditz · 25/11/2005 14:21

Breasts have no sexual function whatsoever. It makes me very cross when it is assumed that they are a sexual feature. It is men who have decided they should be covered up, to stop other men looking at them.

I don't care if men or women or children look at my breasts, any more than if they look at my face. I don't feel that breasts are something that should be hidden.

zippimistletoes · 25/11/2005 14:25

Colditz do you honestly believe breasts have no sexual function..I find exactly the opposite in relation to myself

Mummyvicky · 25/11/2005 14:55

Heres a website to support Colditz Here
I love seeing other mums breastfeeding- I couldn't care less who sees mine, but I do try and retain some dignity and try not to let them flop about all over the place !

Alookathose?

'Viewing window'. Snurk.

slightly on a tangent, but in islam, a woman does not have to cover her breasts in front of other women. she can happily wander round topless.

im very glad that most women dont

alux · 25/11/2005 19:57

i'd be really pleased when a woman can do whatever they like in this country, in front of whoever, like this

philippat · 25/11/2005 19:59

oh that picture was great, wasn't it? I don't remember which country, but the guy was the country's president if I remember rightly. Would LOVE to see Tony Blair pictured like that.

motherinferior · 25/11/2005 20:01

What a lovely pic.

moondog · 25/11/2005 21:16

Stitch..what you say is interesting as in Saudi there is invariably friction at the campus swimming pool where my parents live as many Muslim women object to the swimwear worn by other women. (It is the source of a great many bizarre directives and guidelines that whizz around the uni. staff by e mail.)

When I was there,I was stunned at seeing women swimming in full length gowns, despite the fact that it was a women only session in a pool surrounded by very high walls with two guards keeping the blokes at bay!!!!

harpsichordcarrier · 25/11/2005 21:26

it is acceptable and indeed de rigeur because frankly I have quite lovely breasts
sadly it is a bit too bloody parky to get them out as I found today
nipples became like chapel hat pegs
dd2 got very cross

suzi2 · 25/11/2005 21:39

I'm always in 2 minds... take top down and reaveal gigantic (36J) white wobbly boob or whisk top up and reveal gigantic stretchmarked wobbly tum!

FFM-yes I think it's acceptable. Would prefer to see all manner of boobies to screaming babies

PMSL at the feeding cape.

suedonim · 26/11/2005 00:15

Now we know where Michael Jackson buys those cloths he drapes over his kids' heads!!! But black polyester???? Your cute ickle newborn baby would be sweating like a pig under that!

Nightynight · 26/11/2005 17:29

moondog - thats why Saudi women need Islam, to protect their rights.

moondog · 26/11/2005 17:30

Oh. That's clear then.

Not....

Nightynight · 26/11/2005 17:40

oh goodness moondog I dont want to start another Islam thread, but women were treated very badly before Islam, and Islam was the first movement that gave them rights. (not 50-50 but you have to take into account that they were starting with some people who murdered female babies)

moondog · 26/11/2005 20:56

I suppose we should be grateful for small mercies then eh??

(Don't worry,it's enough for me dealing with 'Peacedove' let alone anyone else!)

marthamoo · 26/11/2005 21:08

Rather nice for teenage boys to see that norks have another purpose and are not just there for their wanktastic gratification. Good on her!

finefatmama · 26/11/2005 21:20

I think soft porn was a strong word. my apologies.

I still found it shocking to get on a london bus and find a half naked lady smack in the middle of the bus.

It's all well and good that the babies be fed but the teen agers somehow must have mentally blocked the baby from the picture and only seen the breasts and from what dh said when i told him, it's probably the case.

Being the typical worrier and paranoid, I have temp with a charity that works with peadophiles (spelling?) and stuff like that seemed to fuel their ....YUCK! I did quit coz i'd rather clobber the men as a solution. Then there were those phone calls from women who wanted to know if having sex while breastfeeding was abuse. it was usually the partners idea. I think i have been traumatised ever since. I had a nice lacey scarf to cover myself with if i ever had to breastfeed in public.

Then again maybe it's just me being a prude. my mum said i self weaned at 4 weeks.

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 26/11/2005 21:23

I don't think we really want to go there. If I were you I would back away slowly before I clobber you.

WigWamBam · 26/11/2005 21:26

Oh, it gets better ... breastfeeding now equated with abuse (again) and paedophilia ...

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 26/11/2005 21:27

Don't do it anyone, it's just what they want. Back away!

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 26/11/2005 21:28

Contact MN Towers and report it.

WigWamBam · 26/11/2005 21:28

Yep - I think I shall leave it under it's bridge now.
