Bare breasts in public

Do you feel it is acceptable to bare your whole breast while breastfeeding in public.

I remember getting on a bus in summer and somehow was shocked to see that a lady on the bus had slipped off her spaghetti strap and lowered top to breastfeed her baby. I was surprised that i felt disgusted by it. surely she is feeding the baby. Couldnt she have lifted up the top instead? the teenage boys behind me were more into the huge breasts and it started to look like soft porn.

Stitch, really?! Gratuitous nork-waving in order to get ogled by teenage boys?!

BahHumbugBadgerBadger · 25/11/2005 10:30

ROFL @ this.

My sister, at 18 refused to bow to society and it's expectations and used to whip her whole top off to feed, wherever we were.

Any attempt by anyone to approach her to have a go was met by a steely gaze which caused them to retreat.

She received more encouragement than slating for this, I think people were surprised and pleased to see someone enjoying feeding so immensely and feeling completely unselfconscious about it, rather than disgusted.

WigWamBam · 25/11/2005 10:37

I would suggest that if someone feels breast-feeding is akin to porn then the problem is with them, not with the woman breast-feeding.

tiktok · 25/11/2005 10:51

Stich, sorry, but lolling at the idea of a hanky over the breast!!!

I mean...

  • how would it stay there?
  • who carries a hanky with them at all crucial moments?
  • what if it had snot on it? Or chocolate spread from wiping toddler's mouth?
  • wouldn't it look RI-DI-CU-LOUS and draw more attention to the breastfeeding?

And the other idea to have a scarf or a shawl to hand - even more daft looking in high summer (which is when women wear the little tops, anyway...).

For goodness sake - women feed babies, and they don't stay in the house all day, and they wear clothing appropriate to the weather. This means babies will sometimes feed from mothers in strappy tops.

Can we not all live with those simple facts?

Hankies? Per-lease.

tiktok · 25/11/2005 10:52

And even I would catch myself staring at a mother feeding trying to hold a hanky over her breast!!!

Still lolling....

hunkermunker · 25/11/2005 10:53

A hanky?! PMSL that something so delicate would cover even a corner of my norkage!

flamesparrow · 25/11/2005 10:54

I wear strappy tops winter and summer alike!!!

Where do you buy hankies from anyway? I'm a tissue girly mysellf...

When page 3, the lad mags and all the porn in places like newsagent (ffs) have been banned, THEN and only then, might I have a serious discussion on how offensive or inoffensive bare breasts in public are.

Do you go in to newsagents etc and tell them that you find these publications offensive? No? Oh, funny that.... Let's all collude with the idea that our breasts are for men but my god, not for our children.

BEANSPROUT ---- SORRY ABOUT COPYING WORD FOR WORD BUT I FELT WHAT YOU SAID WAS SPOT ON AND SO NEEDS REPEATING AND THE MEN/POLICE/NEWSREPORTERS COULD DO WITH COPYING IT THE NEXT TIME THEY WANT TO REPORT SUCH INCIDENTS!

frannyandzooey · 25/11/2005 11:12

Actually, there is porn that features lactating women, (they call them 'milkmaids'), but it's at the bizarre end of the spectrum, I would think. Agree it is nicer for teenage boys to be ogling a real breast than an airbrushed, silicone one in a magazine.

tiktok · 25/11/2005 11:12

I've got it!

Breastfeeding women should wear bibs.

They have the advantage of

  • being able to be tied round the back of the neck and therefore need no holding on with 'spare' hand (unlike a hanky)
  • coming in a variety of jolly colours with Postman Pat, Tweenies, Superheros, Barbie emblems on them
  • being part of a travelling mum's normal handbag luggage
  • doubling up as handy wipers in case of leaks

They might be a bit small - you'd need to extend the ties with extra yardage and hunker might need to wear two or three sewn together and I don't know if the baby would be terribly comfy with a bib over his little face but what do we care? It's the comfort of grown up people on the bus we should be worrying about.

I even have a name for them - TitBibs.

Who's gonna join me in this wonderful new production?

hunkermunker · 25/11/2005 11:14

Can you make thermal ones for January babies, Tiktok?

Tamba · 25/11/2005 11:14

It is so much easier to feed from the top in a strappy vest, and it covers your stretchmarks! I started off being shy about feeding but by the end i was flashing them all over the place!

flamesparrow · 25/11/2005 11:17

A bib would probably be good for me in general - I can use it when I eat my dinner... i always throw food down my top!!! I blame the added norkage - a much bigger surface area, so more likely to catch food down em.

teeavee · 25/11/2005 11:19

lol at the new term 'norkage'

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 25/11/2005 11:21

Do you think perhaps that this particular troll just wanted you all to talk about breastfeeding and showing your breasts so that they could get off on it?
If so they're having a right old time right now!

Caligyulea · 25/11/2005 11:22

Oh ffs.

Grow up.

Caligyulea · 25/11/2005 11:22

That was to finefatmama btw, not to anyone else

tiktok · 25/11/2005 11:22

Eeeek....someone has got the idea before me:

very stupid garment

Loving the 'viewing window'.

She might as well have the words 'my breasts are bare under here' emblazone in neon lettering.

tiktok · 25/11/2005 11:26

And here's another one, for summer:

equally stupid garment

BahHumbugBadgerBadger · 25/11/2005 11:27

Oh my!

That is absolutely horrendous!
