I was quite excited. Lady looked quite taken aback. DS is not quite 6 months!

Still waiting for mine at just shy of 8 months. I'm jealous now Envy

RobynLou · 06/05/2011 21:01

with DD1 I got it at 6 weeks from the Irish landlady of our local!

Ormirian · 06/05/2011 21:05

Just get your instant response ready:

"yes. Now fuck off there's a dear"

MrsRigby · 06/05/2011 21:08

Mother-in-law asked the same thing when DS1 was 3 months. She was outraged that all he was having was breastmilk.

I breastfed DS1 until 7 months when he weaned himself and I'm still breastfeeding DS2 who has just reached 7 months.

QueenofDreams · 06/05/2011 21:09

I got mine when DS was 4 months old. 'OH MY GOD WOMAN GET HIM ON A BOTTLE!' from a childless friend

JennyPiccolo · 06/05/2011 21:10

they'd be complaining if you stopped feeding him!

Cies · 06/05/2011 21:11

I got that implied from the student paediatric nurse at my ds' nine month check up. OK, not as bad as all the above, but she was a student nurse Shock.

seeksnewnamewithgsoh · 06/05/2011 21:14

I'm still waiting for mine at 11 months!

I never got/get so much as a Hmm feeding in public, let alone a Biscuit (or even a Brew)

Although my mum and nan have started with the oh so passive agressive "you've done So Well to get This Far"...

redandyellowandpinkandgreen · 06/05/2011 21:36

It was followed by a 'you've done well to get this far'. Yay, I got a full house on the breastfeeding bingo.

well it's true, you have done well to get this far being as only a few percent of babies are still breastfed at 6 months.

what's wrong with that?

TheSydenhamSet · 06/05/2011 22:21

i can't help but feel so happy that my dd is almost a year and i'm still bf her. woohoo!! After a disastrous attempt with ds1 and giving up by day 10 i'm thrilled to have got this far.

Guacamole · 06/05/2011 22:22

I'm still feeding my DS at 1 year... I'm slightly embarassed about it (I know I shouldn't be, but I am). I've lied to my MIL (who has a problem with breastfeeding) and told her that I've stopped. As I only feed morning and night now, what she doesn't see or know, she can't whinge about.

joyousthings · 06/05/2011 22:27

Our DC stopped themselves just after 13/15 months. Like Guacamole it was just morning and night for the latter months. It is soon (they grow quickly) over enjoy the closeness while it lasts and ignore negative comments. IMO breastfeeding is best you will see over the forthcoming months.

seeksnewnamewithgsoh · 06/05/2011 22:28

It's not wrong per se but really, I did well to make it to 3 weeks. It was awful to start with. Once I'd got over the first 5 weeks, it was a doddle. So it didn't feel like I'd done well to get further, actually I'm taking the path of least resistance to keep going as long as DD wants. Grin

Guac, don't worry, I don't tell most people I'm planning to carry on bfing. They all assumed we would stop at 6 months, and I think they're quietly assuming the same about 1 year. We'll see how they all take it in a few months Grin

seeksnewnamewithgsoh · 06/05/2011 22:29

That first bit was to yesterday btw. Few x posts thrown in there.

lostinindia · 06/05/2011 23:06

I got my first comment at 10mnths when 2 'friends' screeched bitty at me when I mentioned I was 'still' bfing. That was pretty horrible. They have no idea how long I ended up bfing for.

I BF my DD till she was 2yrs 5mnths. Stopped 3 days ago. Really disliked it towards the end (well I hope its the end) but was reliant on it to get her to sleep at night and when she woke at 5am in the morning.

On top of that I was tandem feeding as I have a 18wk DS (who thankfully isn't fed to sleep and is self settling). I intend to wean him fully by the time he's 1yr.

Beamur · 06/05/2011 23:10

I got lots of support at first, but if you're still feeding past 1, some people get a bit strange! I mentioned it to my elderly (and pro breast feeding granny) and she looked a bit shocked, I hushed up keeping going for another year and a half...

AngelDog · 06/05/2011 23:43

Yes, some people do get funny. I've not had many comments (apart from a couple from my parents) but I find it helps to be assertive. Someone was telling me once that my DS feeding to sleep was a Bad Thing, so I said, "Oh, I love feeding to sleep - it stopped working for naps at 8 months and I was gutted." That soon stopped the comments. Grin

SoozleQ · 07/05/2011 00:02

I'm cross with my mother at the moment. She has the audacity to tell me off for feeding in public and tells me that I should cover up. Grrrr, the things I would like to say to her....

startail · 07/05/2011 00:16

DD2 had her last BF at close on 10 years old and I have friends whose DC feed till 5+.
The last time I remember feeding her properly in public she was about 14 months and I often feed her during swimming lessons up to that sort of age. No one ever said anything, probably very few people noticed, she did have it to a fine art Smile My parents and sister wouldn't comment, my Mum would have stood no interference from my Grandparents Grin
I'd have happily carried on feeding her in public, but she simply got too tall, I had either to lie in bed, her fav for mornings. Or across my lap, like a little baby, but with her legs resting on the sofa. Therefore the one person who might have got put out was DH, who got a less comfortable seat. DD1 didn't mind me feeding DD2 because I'd either do it watching telly with her or she'd hand me a book to read, either was better than Mum vanishing into the kitchen!

chloesbaby · 07/05/2011 10:35

i had my first 'are you still feeding him?' comment two weeks ago. ds is four months. it was from a male, childless friend and the exact wording was 'are you still milking?'

it was so outrageous i just laughed

Athrawes · 07/05/2011 10:44

Oooo they are gonna get a shock in the UK when I come back from NZ with my 10 month old, happily BFing and with no intention of stopping before 2 if I can help it. Where we are in NZ has the distinction of being both most economically most deprived and has highest BFing rates at 6 weeks and 6 months. Anyone negatively commenting on BFing in our small hick town would get the evil stares from a whole pile of random strangers. Male cafe owners have said "anyone objects send them to ME, grrr".

ChippingIn · 07/05/2011 10:46

Startail - 10 years old Why?

RitaMorgan · 07/05/2011 10:46

I always feel a bit uncomfortable when people say "you've done so well to get this far" Confused

Maybe I feel like a bit of a fraud because it hasn't been a struggle. It's certainly easier than making formula.

ChippingIn · 07/05/2011 10:47

Athrawes - Grin where abouts are you? Whangarei?
