A-Level Boarding Schools Recemmendation (London/Manchester/Midlands)

Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some "real world" advice from parents. My son is currently completing his IGCSEs at an International British school in Saudi Arabia and (after spending 13 years) will be moving back to the UK for A-levels in September 2027.

He is keen on Mathematics and Business Studies, so we are prioritizing schools with a strong academic track record in these subjects, but we also want a school with excellent sports facilities espeically cricket to ensure a balanced lifestyle.
We have a shortlist of schools, but we want to hear from parents about their actual lived experiences—beyond what is written in the brochures. Specifically, if your child attends or has attended any of the following, I would love to hear your thoughts:

North/Midlands: Queen Ethelburga’s, Rossall, Repton, Shrewsbury, Lancaster Grammar, Concord College.
South/London: Bromsgrove, Mill Hill, Malvern, Bedford, Royal Russell, Lancing College, Charterhouse.
Manchester specific: Abbey College Manchester.

I am particularly interested in:
Academic Rigour: How is the support for A-level Maths and Business?
Integration: How well do students coming from international schools settle in?
Facilities: Are the sports facilities as great as they look online?
Pastoral Care: How is the boarding experience? Is the environment supportive for a 16-year-old living away from home?

which airport will you fly into? How far from the airport do you want to be?
Then I would look at all the schools in that radius.

check a map! Bromsgrove and Malvern are neither in London nor the south so you might have a bit of a shock first.

You’re doing this to qualify for home fees at uni, right? You’ll be in for a shock, they don’t count time attending boarding school if the parents live abroad. Those schools are all over the place and some are shite. Others… good luck getting in. Where on earth did you get such a strange and mismatched list?

Ellesmere college for the cricket?

I agree you've got a very mixed list there. Is your son a british citizen? He needs to be in order board at a state boarding school like Lancaster Grammar. You've got a range of budgets in your list as well, if Lancaster's fees are similar to Ripon's (my only experience) then they'll be about 1/3 of QEs! You need to factor this in when comparing facilities etc

most important question? Do you want full boarding where all children stay in every weekend- no ifs or buts?
if so then you want Oundle or Rugby. Both academically rigorous with outstanding cricket provision.
or do you want any option at all to come out on any weekends (except for the fixed compulsory exeats one each side of half term) then don’t choose these two schools. You have hundreds of other boarding schools that will be academically rigorous and a sub section of those will be good for cricket.
repton would nearly make the list except they buy in so much sports talent on scholarships then unless your child is already signed to a uk county academy then they won’t make the first cricket team there so I’d strike that. The cricket in Saudi won’t be a par with repton first team cricket I’m afraid.

The closing date for sixth form applications for the best schools close imminently for next sept too so you need to crack on for the better schools.

Shrewsbury would be okay. It’s not far on the train from Birmingham airport. Concord is very academic so need to be A* student from what I have heard.

Ideally, we would prefer a school located near London or Manchester. We are looking for a full-boarding school that offers a supportive environment and sound academic standards, although it does not need to be among the most academically selective schools.
The main reason we are considering sending him back to the UK is the low retention of teaching staff at his current school, which has affected the continuity and consistency of his education.

Thank you all for the feedback. To clarify, we are specifically looking for a full boarding experience where our son stays at the school every weekend. We believe this immersive environment is the best fit for him.

However, as he is not an A student, we are seeking a school with moderate entry requirements* that can support him in improving his grades. He is very keen on pursuing Business Management at university.

We are looking for a competent and supportive academic environment—one that maintains high standards but is accessible to students who are not at the top academic tier. Given this, are there any specific schools you would recommend that balance strong teaching with a nurturing atmosphere?

@MKDmumofflash Thank you for pointing that out. Yes, my son is a British citizen, so we are considering both state and independent boarding options. We are aware of the price difference, but we are primarily focusing on finding the right academic fit and a supportive environment for his Business studies. I appreciate you highlighting the fact that the facilities vary significantly across these different budgets.

I cannot understand why Queen Ethelburga's is on your list as it is not near Manchester or London? In any case, there are plenty of reasons out there online as a reason to be wary of this school. I think you need to do more research before putting it on your list.

Take a look at Christs Hospital in West Sussex. Gatwick airport v close. Great pastoral care. Amazing sports facilities.

Whitgift has boarding and day. It is strong on cricket and other sports. Has hosted county games and has excellent facilities. It is in South Croydon.

Haileybury is a great school for cricket.

What are his predicted GCSE grades? What subjects will he be picking for A Levels? Maths, Buisness studies & ?
Is he quiet, shy, outgoing...?

I'm not a parent so have no skin in the game, but I had a friend who worked at Rishworth School - it's just in Yorkshire, but the Mcr side, and you can get the train from Sowerby Bridge to Manchester using the Caldervale line.

OP looking for full boarding so whitgift, Haileybury and 99% of schools most people will recommend will not suit as the weekends will be awful. Having loved this personally and with my DC, if your child is intending on staying in at weekends, then choose a school where no pupils can nip home after Saturday matches (and back for Monday lessons). Most schools will fob you off with a line saying that given the choice most pupils stay in. This is rubbish and they say that to fill boarding spaces. If kids can go home, they will. If one goes home, they all go home like rats off a sinking ship. If no one can go home it’s because they’ve chosen a school where you cannot go home and they and the school are committed to a full 7 day programme and the weekends are brilliant.

Oundle may still suit if his cricket is strong enough it will by pass the sixth form academic entry requirements (higher than at 13+ due to strong demand and limited places). Oundle is not a hot house but all children have to work hard, achieving whatever they are capable of. 99% get A-C grades, for example. Rugby - same as Oundle. Also look at Uppingham as that’s got excellent cricket and lower academics than O and R but still full boarding.
im not sure of which other schools in the uk are truly full boarding as they are out of of geographic area (eg no idea about Christ’s if it is full boarding and what the cricket is like) - but the first question to ask the school registrar is do all boarders stay in school except for the fixed termly exeats? Very few uk schools do this. Having a decent weekend experience outranks any sporty offering . Nothing is more miserable than being at school on a Saturday night and most of the uk based children have nipped home for a night. Very lonely and causes the overseas kids to have to club together - when ordinarily they might not want to be close buddies.

@TryingmyLevelBest , @Fiddlesticks1 , and @Smorgs , thank you for suggesting Christ's Hospital, Whitgift, and Haileyburyed. The proximity to Gatwick and the strong cricket facilities at Whitgift are particularly appealing to us.

@3WildOnes, to answer your questions: my son is a friendly and social and caring student. Academically, he is not at the A* level, but he is hardworking and we are looking for a school that can help him bridge that gap and improve his grades. He is keen to pursue Business Management, Economics and Maths for his A-levels.
We are specifically looking for full boarding with a moderate entry threshold and good airport access (London, Birmingham, or Manchester). Based on your suggestions, we are now looking closely at Bromsgrove, Christ's Hospital, and Whitgift.

If anyone has further thoughts on these three, or other similar suggestions, I would be very grateful!

I don't know Bromsgrove but Whitgift will empty on weekends.
I agree with PP that you want a school that only allows boarder home on exeat weekends.
Is Dorset too far? It's not completely full boarding but I think boarders do have to stay 50% of weekends.
Harrow?

Coming on to second the Christs Hospital suggestion. They are very much a full boarding school - DD went there for 6th form and you need a very good reason to take them out of school on a non exeat weekend (other than for Sunday lunch). They also have a system where a boarding house stays open on a rota for the exeats so that the international students dont need a guardian to stay with and are all together rather than rattling around as one of a handful in their usual house.

They are not the very top tier academically but the pupils do well and they usually have a very good line up of leavers destinations.

They are a very sporty school with 800 acres of grounds to accomodate that. They also have their own train station on the direct line from Gatwick 4 stops away.

He would have to be happy with the uniform though.

Definitely still consider Shrewsbury, it meets all of the criteria you have specified. Easy to reach Manchester or Birmingham airport. I don’t have children there at the moment, but know several there and will be looking into it myself when DC are appropriate age.

Have you talked to an education consultant? They’d be able to advise you on the best fit for your criteria and where your son is likely to be offered a place.

A lot of schools will not let students do both business and economics a levels so that may narrow it down further. Canford might be worth a look. It expands significantly at 6th form and while there is reasonable flexibility re weekends it doesn’t empty out like the schools closer to London. New sixth form centre which has accommodation for the U6th. Cricket is good but remember that in the uk it is primarily a summer term sport with just nets in the winter.
