Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some "real world" advice from parents. My son is currently completing his IGCSEs at an International British school in Saudi Arabia and (after spending 13 years) will be moving back to the UK for A-levels in September 2027.

He is keen on Mathematics and Business Studies, so we are prioritizing schools with a strong academic track record in these subjects, but we also want a school with excellent sports facilities espeically cricket to ensure a balanced lifestyle.
We have a shortlist of schools, but we want to hear from parents about their actual lived experiences—beyond what is written in the brochures. Specifically, if your child attends or has attended any of the following, I would love to hear your thoughts:

North/Midlands: Queen Ethelburga’s, Rossall, Repton, Shrewsbury, Lancaster Grammar, Concord College.
South/London: Bromsgrove, Mill Hill, Malvern, Bedford, Royal Russell, Lancing College, Charterhouse.
Manchester specific: Abbey College Manchester.

I am particularly interested in:
Academic Rigour: How is the support for A-level Maths and Business?
Integration: How well do students coming from international schools settle in?
Facilities: Are the sports facilities as great as they look online?
Pastoral Care: How is the boarding experience? Is the environment supportive for a 16-year-old living away from home?

If you have a child at any of these, please let me know the pros and cons. Thank you so much!

@oceanic909 you have a good list OP. The same names keep coming up. What’s your final shortlist?

Malvern has decent cricket facilities but the teams they produce are pretty average

But it's a lovely campus and a nice option. If your son is a decent player but not hoping to play at the bunbury festival then you don't need to go to a specific sporting school and malvern is nice.

Anyway go and have a look is the best advice I think

Take a look at Christs Hospital in West Sussex. Gatwick airport v close. Great pastoral care. Amazing sports facilities.

Having had a child at Christs Hospital, I agree they have great pastoral support and very good sports facilities. They even have their own leisure centre (and train station on the main line from Gatwick Airport) However, if your child is less academic they may struggle at CH.
It is full boarding with leave weekends every third weekend and my child would come home. Pupils who had no relatives to stay with would have to stay in one of the boarding houses with others who were remaining onsite.
Because my child was already there, I have no information about the selection process for 6th form (called Grecians)
They have to also accept the wearing of the traditional uniform

My child is very happy at Rossall, although isn’t boarding. The pastoral care has been excellent and it’s a really lovely campus.

Of the ones you've listed I'd pick Shrewsbury School.

Curve ball suggestion but easy access to London would be Royal Hospital School (RHS) in Ipswich, Suffolk. Great all rounder with full boarding community, especially at sixth form. About 50% of school board in some capacity so very much part of the character of the school.

They do Business A Level in addition to Economics and take maths very seriously (even offer a bi annual maths scholarship for sixth form). They even do a BTEC in enterprise and entrepreneurship. Not hot house but results are very good and they are very capable of stretching most able. I know people who have picked it over local grammars and Ipswich School to get greater breadth. Pastoral is excellent and indeed award winning. Sports facilities are impressive too and they take them v seriously. As well as more usual sports, they offer climbing, golf (on site) and of course sailing which it's famous for. All children can try sailing if they don't already sail.

Think the facilitate transport to key airports like Heathrow so travelling back and forth shouldn't be issue and they are close to Ipswich station which is on mainline about an hour from London.
