A-Level Boarding Schools Recemmendation (London/Manchester/Midlands)

Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some "real world" advice from parents. My son is currently completing his IGCSEs at an International British school in Saudi Arabia and (after spending 13 years) will be moving back to the UK for A-levels in September 2027.

He is keen on Mathematics and Business Studies, so we are prioritizing schools with a strong academic track record in these subjects, but we also want a school with excellent sports facilities espeically cricket to ensure a balanced lifestyle.
We have a shortlist of schools, but we want to hear from parents about their actual lived experiences—beyond what is written in the brochures. Specifically, if your child attends or has attended any of the following, I would love to hear your thoughts:

North/Midlands: Queen Ethelburga’s, Rossall, Repton, Shrewsbury, Lancaster Grammar, Concord College.
South/London: Bromsgrove, Mill Hill, Malvern, Bedford, Royal Russell, Lancing College, Charterhouse.
Manchester specific: Abbey College Manchester.

I am particularly interested in:
Academic Rigour: How is the support for A-level Maths and Business?
Integration: How well do students coming from international schools settle in?
Facilities: Are the sports facilities as great as they look online?
Pastoral Care: How is the boarding experience? Is the environment supportive for a 16-year-old living away from home?

What about LVS as easy to get to Heathrow or Charthouse or Wellington. They all sound like they would fit what you are looking for.

There’s quite a mixed bag there! Some are not that academic. LVS isn’t that great. It’s not Charterhouse!

Also in private schools, the brighter dc will be doing Economics and not Business studies. So how academic is DS? If he’s not, rule out the academic schools like Charterhouse. If he’s academic, you should add in Rugby. You need a much better grip on academics and how competitive entry is.

OP I was in a similar situation to you for similar reasons. Your criteria are similar to what we were looking for. In the end, my son went to Kingswood which is in Bath (so an hour from London on the train). It delivered everything we hoped for: it’s a really kind school with an excellent focus on pastoral care but it’s also good at academics and lifting your child up wherever their starting point. It’s also boarding with no compulsory expat weekends. There’s a solid group of children from international backgrounds. I’d suggest it’s worth a conversation with them. Their admissions team are excellent.

@oceanic909 please consider Oundle or Rugby, both are full boarding, great cricket, have a good % of students are international, strong academics but a good B student can get in. Birmingham airport not too far

Bromsgrove offers full boarding. In fact, they offer year-round boarding - some students stay during the holidays too. Cricket is good.

What IGSE results is he likely to get?

@Littlefish Thank you very much for your kind feedback. Actually made a contact with Bromsgrove and they confirmed they have around 220 full time boarders.

I know someone who went to Christ’s and they def didn’t come home every weekend (if that helps!).

I know nothing about boarding schools but if you are after schools that are strong in maths then you need a school that has a decent number doing further maths. Even if your ds doesn’t want to do it himself you want to have the further maths kids in his maths lessons. It will massively pull up the standard of the class.

Just for my knowledge whats a decent about at say Alevel, like 30 or 20? My son is doing Further Maths there are 10 in his classs but there seems to be between 20 and 30 in the entire year

Futher Mathematicians will most likely be in a separate set at A Level in schools mentioned here. It would only slow them down to be doing core Maths in mixed sets.

Malvern or Shrewsbury sound like standouts from this list, for full boarding, strong academics, great pastoral care and really fantastic for cricket in particular. I'd start there then use those to compare others against, although I'm not sure any will stack up!

Have a look at DLD London.

right by waterloo, incredible self contained building with v smart boarding upstairs in the skyscraper. Modern, v international and forgiving on entry grades. Excellent support and extra help available if theyre struggling. They can also swap to btech business half way through if a levels too challenging.

loads of subject options. Even an esports team!

Ah - could be. My experience is from doing Further maths myself and from having a child doing further maths. But in both cases we are in the comprehensive system so slightly different.

I agree that Shrewsbury is a great contender. Excellent cricket. A step down in sandwich of Oundle and rugby are too strong. A great school. No idea about Malvern as I’ve just not come across it but I have heard cricket is good there.

This is actually incorrect.

If a parent is based abroad and it's best for British interest then home fees are offered and honoured for university.

A bit out there, but mine just started A-levels at Hartpury College. It has absolutely amazing sports facilities and a cricket academy (although I don't know how good it is as it's very famous for its equine and rugby academies). The grounds are absolutely gorgeous and the accommodation really nice. In terms of academia, its A-levels are mainly science-focused as many who go there aim for veterinary medicine or sports science type degrees. It also has many alternative college courses of course. It's early days, but I'm very happy with it.

Have you looked into whether any of the boarding schools offer Business Studies at A Level? It's not a very independent school kind of subject. They are more likely to offer Economics.
