I thought soup Saturdays were on pause, but no, winter is still here.

Anyone cooking anything exciting this weekend?

I've been feeling for some chapati and chicken or some roti with curried chicken (plenty pepper); but I can make neither roti nor chapati. If you can, my address is...

I haven't cooked today because I've taken my sons to a farm hotel for the night and we've just eaten a rather bland steak, roast chicken and kids burgers.

Im also feeling for some curry chicken but won't be cooking that tomorrow as my husband is returning from a week working in Jamaica and most definitely not going to feel for yard food so I'm thinking sea bass or salmon with some prawns too, veg and rice.

I can't help with your roti / chapatti craving. Sorry!

purpleheartsandroses · 07/03/2026 20:01

Chapati is really easy. It's just Atta, pinch of salt, splosh of oil and water. Just time consuming. The right pan to cook it matters though. I can't find a proper one for induction hob.

AmiKabl · 07/03/2026 20:02

Lamb rogan josh on the go. I’d love to be able to make roti or chapatis.

The farm hotel sounds lovely!

I love seabass and salmon too, so would have some of that 😋. I need a Trini friend for some good roti and their curry chicken. And a Kenyan for the chapati and their chicken.

I hope your husband suitcase is full with 'di good tings dem' 😉 .

Thank you for that. I'm going to give that recipe a try. Do I need to leave the dough to rise or anything?

I had a lovely Kenyan/Ugandan lady that invited me round when she made them, but she moved away 🫩.

Sounds delish too. I won't try cooking it though, because I'd hate to mess it up.
I'll just wait until I get to one of my favourite South Asian restaurants and order this.

Is it obvious I love food? 😃

He didn't have a large luggage allowance, as it's work, so I don't think he's returning fully loaded but we are there for Christmas (give tanks!) so will hold out until then.
We have an abundance of rum and seasoning from previous trips so can wait.

And the farm hotel has been nice.

AmiKabl · 07/03/2026 21:45

I cheated and used a jar of Gymkhana which caught my eye in M & S yesterday!

No, but as your cooking, hold the edges down with metal tongs so the air gets trapped and you get giant air bubbles rising inside. I think I've explained that really badly but it just sort of puffs up once you get the knack.

Dweetfidilove · 07/03/2026 22:03

@TheRealKatnissEverdeen Rum and seasoning are a must 😀. My daughter gets regular request to bring rum to parties now she's in 6th form, because her classmates apparently know that there's 'always' rum in the house. Errrmmmmm 🤨

@AmiKabl , I promise not to tell 😃.

I think I get the jist. I'll let you know how I get on when I try 👌🏾.

🤣🤣🤣That's hilarious. I have a while yet as my sons are both under 10!
Their friends ask for dumplings since I made them at a school cultural day fair last year!

Smh 😅. As if I'm going to supply children with 70% alcohol.

Dumplings are always a hit 😊.

No cooking by me for the past week or so. DH is on a roll at the moment, I think partly inspired by the new air fryer!

If you’re near a Tesco they may have Jamaica’s Pride, £6.

Can’t recall if I’ve had this one but may be worth a try.

Thank you @Maggiethecat but Tesco has been out of stock for around 6 months now

Hahaha do you know I absolutely didn't even think about that. He declared, last month, that he isnt buying anymore ackee over here. Even in Brixton, where his barber is, the prices are crazy!

His dad has a house in Runaway Bay with a wholeheap of ackee trees so this could potentially work as he's in Mobay atm. I need to put my request in now as he is returning tomorrow. Pray for me I know he's going to say I should have asked earlier 🫣

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 08/03/2026 10:48

😵‍💫 good find. I will go and hunt this down today but I know my Essex Tesco is not going to have this. Let me see if my sister can find this in South London 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

Dweetfidilove · 08/03/2026 13:54

Gotta love Tesco. I saw cho-cho in the vegetable aisle 2 weeks ago 😅.

I think we need to set up a little bartering system, because the prices here are out of hand 😒.

I currently have
1 last bag of frozen ackee
1 last bag of frozen bread fruit
Pimento
Cinnamon leaves
Pepper
Castor oil

I'll trade for some
Fresh gungo peas
Appleton
Nasebury
Sweetsop
Sweet potato
Patties

Everything's run/running out, so I really need a trip now 😩.

I'm praying for you girl. You could make a mint if he can bring the bounty back lol. What's your price for a bag if you're not too late.

You’re after some premium cargo!!

I’m no longer in London but my aunt introduced me to this place near to her last summer:

Caricom Grocers, Norbury Rd, Thornton Heath.

At the time I was only interested in the East Indian mangoes! But got drawn into other stuff. The green bananas were the best I’ve had in the UK, soft and tasted of home.

They will also roast your breadfruit for you for an extra £1-2.

.

Those premium items are the ones that cost a fortune, so I'll take a shipment or a trade 😅.

I'll check this place out as that looks like a nice range of items, and is much closer than Peckham or Brixton 👌🏾.
