I thought soup Saturdays were on pause, but no, winter is still here.

Anyone cooking anything exciting this weekend?

I've been feeling for some chapati and chicken or some roti with curried chicken (plenty pepper); but I can make neither roti nor chapati. If you can, my address is...

I'm planning on trying to fry my fish for Good Friday in the air fryer, so I've crushed some garlic in oil to infuse, seen as I can't put them in the frying pan as I usually would.
Has anyone done this?

Dweetfidilove · 30/03/2026 06:46

@MissUnicorn I've seen someone on Instagram do her salmon in the airfryer, but fries up the seasoning as normal to top the fish. She doesn't infuse though, so not sure how that works.

Thinking about it I would probably pat the fish dry as much as possible then coat them in oil marinated with the flavours you want eg garlic, pimento, thyme, scotch bonnet pepper.

This may not be necessary if you’re adding an escoveitch sauce but I think giving the fish extra flavour would help in the absence of the flavour that frying adds.

This is exactly my plan. I've crushed up some garlic and some scotchie and seeds and lemon peel.
The fish are currently drying out.

I nearly dropped down in the place I went to by fish today. He tried to tell me nearly 50 quid for 2 snapper. They were big but absolutely not.

Next time I'll make sure I get them from Brixton when I'm in London. Kmt

What?! Love Snapper but not that much 😱

What did you end up getting or did he greatly drop the price?

Maggiethecat · 31/03/2026 21:40

I did plantain in the air fryer yesterday for the first time and although they were good they just didn’t taste as nice as fried in oil!

I think you’re so right in trying to flavour the fish as much as possible.

£50 - Ouch!
Been thinking- Does the fish need anything more than salt and black pepper for the airfryer?
If you're trying to avoid the oil, maybe just the good ol' fashion escoveitch pickle in a bottle soaking between now and Friday is great.

I ended up getting 1 for 20 and some sea bream from Morrisons.
Lesson learned. 🤦🏿

Oil is definitely better taste wise, but I'm trying to lose weight for surgery.

To be honest, this is how my gran made Easter fish.
She was born into 1920s so she wasn't a fan of all these premade seasonings.
Just salt and pepper on the fish, garlic and a scotchie in the oil while she was frying and then make up the pickle, cover the fish and leave to soak for at least 2 days.
Right, I'm going to get my fishy clothes back on. I'll post some pictures when I'm done.

MissUnicorn · 01/04/2026 09:05

I started with the sea bream.
30 minutes on 180.

That looks good and has some crisp. Now I'll be thinking about fish until Friday 😃.

I have an airfryer hiding in a cupboard. I may have to start using it 👌🏾.

I thought it would be a shorter air fryer time though.

@Dweetfidilove
My long belly self may or may not have had a tail for quality control. 😂
I did the next batch for 45 on 180 and I'm happier with it. It's more like how my gran used to fry it.

@Maggiethecat honestly it was eatable after 15 minutes, but I want the colour and crispiness.
Maybe you could get it in 15 minutes by turning the temperature up. I'll try it on another day.

Looks the real deal and quality control is essential! 😜

I would have thought that so long in the air fryer would make them very dry but will give it a shot at that time/temp.

Yesterday I left my pizza in after the air fryer had turned off and when I eventually took it out it was unrecognisable 😂

MissUnicorn · 01/04/2026 13:15

@Maggiethecat my gran would fry them till they were quite dry and then added back moisture with the pickle. If I weren't set on doing it Mama's way, I would have stopped at 30 minutes. Do it in 15 minute intervals and see what's best for you.

All done now! Looking forward to Friday 😋

I am making a Moroccan influenced tagine for my “man” tonight. I am
a bit scared - he made me an amazing brown chicken stew w/ rice and peas last time so wish me luck.

That’s true! I remember my mum frying them dry dry 😊

Fantastic effort! Hope you and the family enjoy.

Happy Easter!

(I’m thinking I’ll bake Easter bun - need to dig out the recipe)
