what advice would you give a 23 year old black woman who is about to go out in the world?

lets keep this clean and neat, pretty please?

can we also steer away from discussing racism as part of advice?

OP posts:
TheBlackDarner · 02/10/2021 09:42

I saw it as a w.tourist question @Jamdown123. Why would a black woman ask such a question requesting others to leave out racism? As you say, you can't leave out sexism when giving advice.

Nevertheless, there is great advice here. I wish I could send it back to my younger self.

@BobbiPinsOn - will you be returning to engage with the thread you started?

OP if you wanted posters to give generic advice to a 23 year old woman then don't post her skin colour and don't post the request in black MN.

TheBlackDarner · 02/10/2021 14:59

Hilarious! Grin

Great thread BMN.
(despite the OP)

🤣🤣

What did y'all expect from an OP that had this line
lets keep this clean and neat, pretty please?

What even does this instruction mean? Pretty sure that's usually said to teens and younger children.

OP, I hear you. You gave "instructions" and pp still posted but refused to follow them.🤣

TheBlackDarner · 02/10/2021 15:13

The mind boggles as to what "Bobbi" wanted us to say?

Advice on how to slice a watermelon perhaps?

Not advice on reading Dostoevsky for sure. Edmontina Wink

@TheBlackDarner and everybody any more useful advice?

Even though the OP won't be back it will be useful for other posters in future.

TheBlackDarner · 02/10/2021 15:20

The thread content is absolutely sound.

Isn't Bobby Pinson a country singer who votes for Trump?

@Riada ignore the squatters

Also you know you can report trolls? Sometimes MN does delete their posts....

Sorry, you're right. Flowers

TheBlackDarner · 02/10/2021 15:33

Let's get back on topic after the little detour.

This is an excellent resource thread. Just report goady posters.
The mods will deal with it.

No point in engaging with those who don't like black women talking to each other. Smile

TheBlackDarner · 02/10/2021 15:34

Hi @Riada, come and join in, lovely to see you posting here Flowers

TheBlackDarner · 02/10/2021 15:35

Ha. I have no clue. Perhaps OP could give further instructions and make it clear. Lol

LST · 02/10/2021 15:48

@Riada under a rock is the best place for them!

TheBlackDarner · 02/10/2021 15:50

I would say:

Trust yourself, and respect yourself.

Invest in your mental and physical health. Your own well being is most important.

Don't abandon your friends in favour of a partner. A good partner encourages you to have a life outside of your relationship.

Keep your own bank accounts, and save regularly, even a small amount adds up.

Realise that your own education never ends, learn from everything, including your own mistakes. ( We all make them)

RedMarauder · 02/10/2021 17:39

@TheBlackDarner

Good advice.

You have reminded me -

Use the interpersonal skills you have perfected through networking to find out how much your colleagues on the same level as you earn. This will prevent you from underselling yourself.

Then:

  1. Don't be surprised to find out you are more qualified and experienced then you white colleagues especially the white MC males.
  2. Don't be surprised that your interview had harder questions.

Understand and adhere to this from Maya Angelou in all areas of your life -
"When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time."

Buggritbuggrit · 02/10/2021 18:18

OP’s previous posts include such dazzling questions as:

  • What instantly makes a guy hot?
  • Which celebrity would you snog?
  • AIBU to ask you what do you desperately want right now at this point (but cant have)?

I suspect they/she/he is a journalist of some kind. Just dropping these questions, not engaging with the thread and scuttling off.

Anyway, this is still a fabulous thread! Especially loving the contributions from @LookieLikie

My advice is a bit dull in comparison, but I’d say:

  • Wear sunscreen. Yes, you need it. Yes, every day.
  • Do some exercise. Yes, you need it. Yes, every day.
  • Read. Read books. Always be reading a book, your mind and your emotional help will thank you.
  • That shiny job that you think is too good for you? Apply for it. Apply for all the things. Never limit yourself, you can do pretty much anything.
  • Do not date garbage men. You don’t NEED to be in a relationship. Live your life, enjoy yourself and don’t tie yourself in knots seeking male validation (I realise that this is heteronormative - if you don’t date men, feel free to ignore this bit!)
EdmontinaDonsAutumnalHues · 02/10/2021 18:23

Surely holds true for not dating garbage women either! No one needs to be in a relationship.

I’m sorry, but - Step Away From the Fetishists - you will always deserve better. (You know the ones I mean.)
