Hello everyone! Welcome to the second thread! Hope you are happy enough that I've gone ahead with this title! If not, I won't be mortally offended if you ditch it and start again!

Here is the list - hope it is more or less up-to-date. Apologies if you're missing, please add yourself on. Pogue - we don't have you on here. Scared - are you still around? Perhaps you've moved to the May thread. Let us know how you're doing.

GibberingGinger · 08/01/2010 14:42

Hi to all new joiners. Tis lovely to have a long list again. There was a horrible spell early on when the list was getting shorter but hopefully we are all past that now.

Am also beginning to feel flutterings. I'm now 16 weeks, and I know they say you can feel it earlier second time round. To me it feels like anticipation/dread in the bottom of my tummy - but even lower. Similar to the sensation you get when you suddenly realise that there is something you have forgotten to do.

Have a midwife appt on Monday. I wasn't supposed to have any appointments between 12 and 20 weeks, but I felt it was just too long. I need some reassurance and a listen of the heartbeats. Not that I have any reason to suspect anything is amiss. So phoned up and said could I come in for a check. They weren't exactly keen (very busy due to backlog from recent bank holidays) but I persuaded them!

Hope everyone is getting on a bit better. January is a rubbish month at the best of times, and not helped by pregnancy niggles. DIMB - hope all went ok at the scan today.

LaTrucha · 08/01/2010 14:56

mampam - I doubt it's LO not growing properly. I think women just develop in different ways. I have a friend who is 28ish weeks and six foot 1. In terms of the fundal measurement (pubis to diaphragm) she isn't actually pregnant at all because when she lies down Lo just settles in.

I fyou are one of the ones who stays small, I envy you. I get to the size of a galleon under sail - or at least I did last time. I was in mat clothes from very early so I guess I will be ginormous again. DD was tiny!

Gibbering Ginger - that's a god description. I sort of feel it is like fingers pressing, but its a whole body turning IYSWIM. But it is quite a 'mysterious' feeling.

fillybuster · 08/01/2010 15:21

I don't want to repost the list for this, but if anyone updates it for a good reason (and sorts out mampams details at the same time ) please would they change my age to 36 now that my birthday has been and gone...!

DIMB - what news from the scan?

Mampam - I'm just at you being nearly 20 weeks and in normal clothes...but I was for the last 2, this is the first time I've been in mat stuff so soon: it sort of depends on how you 'carry' and I was long rather than fat for my dcs. Didn't you say you were quite tall previously? That might make a difference

My energy levels just stretched to it mampam . I have a definite bump but am not really needing maternity clothes yet, although i'm wearing them some days anyway. Last time around i was definitely needing maternity clothes by this point, but I think a lot of this is down to the fact I was bigger to start with before so had less growth room in my normal clothes.

Sorry to everyone who is feeling sick again. I may yet win the prize though, seemed to get my sickness in the 3rd trimester last time but have fingers crossed that won't happen again!

sunshineday · 08/01/2010 15:40

LaTrucha thankfully dc are all in school and the youngest is 7 so if I do go in they are old enough to understand (I hope) and Dh can go on to day shifts and my mum would be able to drop off/pick up from school til dh gets home. But hopefully it will not come to that.

Mampam I think everyone carries different so I would not worry to much about the size of your bump. This time round I have got big quiet early on but it will even out over the months (and being #5 I have no tummy muscles at all )

CantSleepWontSleep · 08/01/2010 15:50

I didn't bother with maternity clothes at all last time, bar a pair of leggings (which then kept falling down anyway). I tend to get a big bump late on, and have plenty of stretchy clothes anyway. I think there's still a pic of me on my profile at 38+3 with ds.

Hoping all went well today DIMB.

I've been to a couple of baby shows before. You can't normally take big stuff (eg pushchairs) home on the day anyway, except poss if you're going at the end of the last day, as exhibitors just take enough to demo. Do research what you think you want beforehand, and go with a list of prices from other suppliers (always check kiddicare for good prices if they stock what you are after). There are usually lots of real nappy suppliers if you are interested in those, and they tend to offer a show discount.

fillybuster · 08/01/2010 16:16

Definitely second kiddicare.com as a good place to sanity check prices before you buy anything...especially for things like travel cots, feeding chairs (about a million times cheaper on here), sterilisers etc.

D*mn, I'm still tracking a year young on the most recent list...never mind, reckon I can roll with that

dinosaurinmybelly · 08/01/2010 17:00

Hello - lovely to see so many newcomers. Am cross on your behalf chestnut to hear that a midwife in Central London is telling you it is not policy to listen to the heartbeat at 16 weeks. I know it is your first, and you want to have a good relationship with her, but my gut (and I suppose this is my third so I'm more daring) would be to say that you'd be more comfortable if she did listen.

I have my 2nd scan today, but as based in New York at the moment, the appointment is not until 6:30pm your time. Please send me all your positive vibes as I'm very nervous, as I think I mentioned before. I haven't felt any flutters, and our blood results at 17 weeks put me in the positive range for Downs, but I've persuaded myself that 1 in 120 is not bad at all. Will post as soon as I return.

I remember a website for yoga classes in London - I think it was www.birthlight.com. Try that, if not I'll dig around later and find the one I used. Also found a site when I was pregnant first time that has good deals on baby stuff www.glasgowpramcentre.co.uk I think it was. Hope the first-time mums can take advantage, and anyone else that has stuff to buy.

CantSleepWontSleep · 08/01/2010 17:18

Ah US time - that explains why you haven't told us how it's gone yet! Fingers firmly crossed for you DIMB.

I'll second GlasgowPramCentre as another good place to buy.
And I'll also mention where NOT to buy, in case first timers aren't familiar - DO NOT BUY FROM TWO LEFT FEET. You can google or check the archives on here if you need to know more, but trust me on this one!

Saucepanman · 08/01/2010 17:42

Hello all, back safe and sound from the clinic.

Got a bit annoyed at midwife, she kept asking and asking why I was there, and being really patronising saying oh we don't NORMALLY see you at this stage (18w2d), and "here's what happens in a NORMAL pg". Eventually I said look, it isn't NORMAL, it's high risk, and total consultant care, and [head of ante natal clinic] made me this appointment!

Chestnut she also tried to fob me off without listening to baby, saying oh we don't NORMALLY [ffs] incase we can't hear it and it worries you, at which point I said look I have the t-shirt on worry, kindly read my notes. I have an anterior placenta and have just had a kick to the bladder so I will be fine. Am v cross about it all- I have gigantic stickers on every page of my notes to avoid scenarios like this. Luckily 8 yrs and 3 pregnancies on I am more than capable of shouting up for myself

mampam · 08/01/2010 18:19

greensnail thank you, you're a star

Filly I'm 5'8". Thinking about it I didn't wear maternity clothes with DD but that was 10 years ago, I was 19 and very slim.

sunshineday #5 wow. Maybe my tummy muscles have had a chance to recover as I had DS nearly 7 years ago!! Do you mind if I ask if you have easy pregnancies/births?? I know for some women it's like shelling peas!! I have always wanted 4 children but after the severe Hyperemisis this time and now SPD I really don't think I could go through it all again.

saucepanman I cannot believe what a witch the MW was. What is wrong with these people?? I realise how lucky I am to have a really lovely MW, (apart from the blood pressure comment) nothing seems to be too much bother for her, I've even got her pager number in case I need her!! You can tell she really loves her job.

LittleRobbo · 08/01/2010 18:57

cantsleepwontsleep many apologies for my blunder, thankyou for so kindly pointing it out, twice! Hope the confusion has settled, sorry ladies

God i am utterly exhausted today,i'm actually counting down til ds2 is safely tucked up so i can throw myself into bed with a hot choc & P&B magazine! Friday night rock&roll again for me heehee!

saucepanman sympathy to you for seeing such a rubbish midwife who is offering you a total lack of support, grrrr.

greensnail · 08/01/2010 19:42

Sorry fillybuster xpost with you earlier - will update your age when i need to do mine in a few weeks if its still not done!

I'm another kiddicare fan. Went to the baby show as well but didn't really need anything by then, just bought a few bits and bobs and picked up all the freebies, generally had a nice girlie day out with a friend who was also pg at the time!

gizmo · 08/01/2010 20:08

Good for you, Saucepanman. Seems we do learn some useful things from pregnancy, after all...even if the midwives don't.

DIMB, how did the scan go? I'm hoping no news is good news.

Mampam, bumps are wierd, aren't they? I'm really puzzled about how they vary not just from person to person but from pregnancy to pregnancy as well. This time around I have corners which is extremely bizarre...

whenwillisleepagain · 08/01/2010 20:32

Hi everyone

Sorry some of you have been having a trying time recently.

As the oldest (I think) woman on the thread, I'm smiling at some of you worrying about how old you're getting.

As as for bigness - one of the staff at DS' nursery asked me yesterday if I was pregnant - and then said 'I thought so - you're normally slim but I was looking at your bum last week..' and then trailed off in embarrassment. So I reassured her it was fine to say I had become a complete lard-arse.

After my episode of flu and chest infection last week I am finally feeling better and just at that stage where things feel good simply because I don't feel shite any more. Oh, and I got a new job on Monday, which is a huge relief as my existing one is being got rid of. I don't think I'll get maternity pay, although I am making a case at the moment, but really I'm just relieved that someone offered a permanent job to a 19 weeks pg woman.

I have 20 week scan and meeting with consultant on Tues. Apparently because I had emergency caesarean 1st time round, I can opt to have a planned one this time - be interested to hear anyone else's experience of this.

A London meet up would be great - count me in. And good luck to everyone with significant appointments next week.

justbeme · 08/01/2010 20:34

Hi finally adding myself to your list! Im now nearing 20 weeks, but just wanted to be sure everything was ok, as have suffered 6 m/c's to date . This will be my third child though and I'm perhaps one of the oldest on here?? Hope to get to know you all better over the coming months!

gizmo I know what you mean about the shape of bumps. Mine consists of 2 rolls of flab (which I can't suck in anymore!). One above my belly button and one below, the funny thing is the one above my belly button sticks out further than the one below which is the real baby bump. Very strange, it gives DH a few laughs though

Whenwilli.... - you'll be entitled to maternity allowance even if you can't get SMP .

GibberingGinger - that's the best description of early movements that I've heard so far. That's exactly how it often feels for me and I've been doubting myself over whether it's the baby or not. BUT this morning I got a popping sensation right against my hand when I had it laid on my tummy so now I'm convinced it's the baby. Hooray!

Hello to all the new people. Glad my call for members didn't go unanswered.

Very sorry for anyone still feeling/being sick. I reckon we're all due for a couple of months of blooming before the cr*pness starts again in earnest!

dinosaurinmybelly · 08/01/2010 23:02

Hello -

just got back from a very thorough genetic counselling & 20week sonagram. The whole process took 3 hours and was nail-biting right until then end when a consultant had to come in and go through the photographs that had been taken. But the news is great - everything is developing beautifully and we are expecting a little girl. I'm so relieved - it was wonderful to see her shuffling around on the screen, as I haven't felt any movements, and from the time we spend photographing her it looks like she doesn't move very much.

DS1 came with us to the scan and it was fantastic to have him there. He asked what the baby was doing, and I told him she was swimming, eating, sleeping - he then asked if she was putting on her pyjamas! He has been adamant from the time we told him after the first scan, that the baby is a girl called Lola. I don't have to manage his expectations on the gender, but he and his Dad are going to have to settle their differences on the name Lola. Perhaps it will grow on DH over the next 20 weeks, as I quite like it!

saucepan am so cross to hear another midwife is spouting this we don't normally nonsense. I've had a couple of blase midwives with previous pregnancies, but they at least would respect my wishes if I had strong feelings about anything. Put your foot down ladies - well done today.

I'm off for a week in the sun with DH and DSs tomorrow - good luck anyone who has appointments next week. I look forward to catching up when I get back...

Fantastic new dinosaur! Made me well up when you said you're expecting a little girl. Have a fantastic holiday!

Cadmum · 09/01/2010 00:03

Hello all!

Dimb: I thought of you several times today. I am SO delighted to hear your news. What an immense relief after all the worry. Three hours must have felt like an eternity. Fab news about little 'Lola'.

filly I'm officially out of the attic! Thanks for noticing that I was gone. I actually haven't even THOUGHT about packing yet. I just find that this thread is so fast paced and I hate to leave people out so I would rather not post than post quickly...

I am feeling significant movement today which will provide me with the reassurance to make it through the next two weeks. I am past the point where I lost the twins and nearing the stage where I lost Owen. (I hate the fact that I cannot enjoy the second trimester. )

My next scan is on the 20th and assuming that there is still a heartbeat, I will have an anomaly scan booked for shortly thereafter and by 22 weeks I will be on the plane(s) to Cambodia. Insane really...

Cadmum · 09/01/2010 00:08

sunshineday I also have a low lying placenta. What is it with #5s? My consultant said that age, # of pregnancies and scar tissue in my uterus make it unlikely that mine will migrate in an upward direction...

I have adopted my usual head in the sand response as I simply cannot spend any time in hospital with four children and a major move on the books. I also refuse to even consider the fact that I might have to have a C-Section. I am petrified of all things surgical. I had the first four without so much as a paracetamol.

Keep thinking positive, upward thoughts. It is still early days. The placenta will move, right?
