Thanks greensnail & cantsleep

I found out at an early scan at 8 wks but have pretty much been in denial waiting for today's scan. Waiting for the result of my combined screening now - apparently no news will be good news....

(oh, and for the record, I'm 35 , although feel about 65 right now)

bluesnowfalcon · 23/12/2009 09:28

hi all I haven't been around for a while found it easier not to worry too much if I wasn't here! Am now 14 weeks and have had a total of 3 scans as had some bleeding at 8+5 and 10+5 but all is well and they couldn't find any reasons for the bleeds

Can't believe that there are so many people on here now - I can't keep up!

Hope everyone is looking forward to a good xmas and that some of you are starting to get bigger round the middle like me now - I look like I've eaten too many pies

GinaFB · 23/12/2009 12:50

Hello all!

Just wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

I am off from work soon and so won't be logging in!

xxxx

minimoonumbertwo · 23/12/2009 14:20

HAPPY CHRISTMAS!!!!! Last day of work woop woop so see you all in 2010 - ENJOY xxx

dinosaurinmybelly · 23/12/2009 14:58

Hello - a big welcome to the new joiners, and big congrats to playtseform and MonkeyMargot on twins!

Had a call yesterday from my midwife to say that my 16 week bloods have come back and that the risk of Downs Syndrome has gone from 1 in 2500 (from the 12wk bloods and the nuchal scan) to 1 in 120 which they consider to be in the positive range. They suggest I go for an amnio, but I don't think those odds are so bad - are they? Anyone else had this experience in the past? I didn't have the blood testing for my previous 2 pregnancies, so I don't have any benchmark as to what the levels of these proteins normally are a this stage for me. I have another scan on 8 Jan when I will be 19 +5. I think I can wait for that to see how things go - what does everyone think?

MillyMollyMoo · 23/12/2009 15:54

mampam Don't wory if it's all planned then everything will be on hand in case of every scenerio, my was all a bit of a "oh shit" situation because nobody knew I would have the epidural or how i'd react.

CONGRATULATIONS to the twinnie mums, supermamas !!!!

Saucepanman · 23/12/2009 19:27

dino- I'm no expert, but with my firs dc my odds were 1 in 250, which is borderline high risk. I was 23 at the time, and my consultant said no need for amnio, and dc was not downs. My dc2 and 3 have been higher odds. However, I can only tell you what I would do- personally whatever the results for this dc4 (had bloods mon so will know next week) I won't be having an amnio. Has anyone talked to you about amnio risk? Tbh your odds could be 1 in 10000 and someone stil has to be the 1. HTH xxx

MonkeyMargot · 23/12/2009 19:29

Wow - playftseforme congrats on twins also. It will be interesting having 3 sets of twins on the thread. Was it a total shock to you? We are still reeling...looking at houses right now as we definitely don't have room in our current tiny terrace.

Dinosaur The odds of miscarriage from an amnio are around 100-1, so greater than the odds of your LO having Downs at 120-1. So based on those odds, I personally wouldn't have the amnio. Think you are wise to wait for the 20-week scan.

playftseforme · 23/12/2009 19:38

Evenin' all, just finished work today for Christmas - hurrah!!!

Hey Monkeymargot - found out at an early private scan and I've been in shock ever since, my Dad's a twin, but I'd always been led to believe that twins follow the male line and even if there are twins in the family, it doesn't raise the odds significantly. Ha ha, got that wrong didn't I!
DH and I were just staring at the screen not realising what we were seeing - we were just hoping for a heartbeat, so we almost didn't hear the sonographer when after saying here's a heartbeat, she went onto say - and here's another one!!
Bit spooky too that we're both 35 and due within a day of each other...
How are you feeling about twins? The financial implications, like moving house, are pretty scary...

MonkeyMargot · 23/12/2009 21:25

Hey playftse. Congrats on finishing work- phew! And relax.
Gosh - so many parallels here - where abouts in the UK are you? I'm in West London.
I think my great-granny was a twin but I'd forgotten (her twin died at birth). It's spooky as my mum saw a clairvoyant woman years ago who told her she would have twin grandsons and she's never stopped going on about it. I haven't told my mum yet as am waiting to do it in person tomorrow when we go up for Xmas. Her face will be a picture!

Yes - the impact of having twins (plus my 13 month old!!) is huge. We need to find a car that can fit 3 carseats in it - I think there's a choice of ...2! And we absolutely have to move house. What about you? Will you need to move also?

LittleRobbo · 23/12/2009 21:27

Good Evening ladies just catching up and wow, congrats to all the newbies expecting twins, how fabulous for you

Very busy doing christmassy stuff so wont be logging on as much as i normally do, but just wanted to wish all of you a wonderful christmas

playftseforme · 23/12/2009 21:34

Hi monkeymargot, I'm in East Surrey so not a million miles away. Commute into central London every day so bit worried how long I'll be able to keep that up! We moved 2 years ago after having dd, so fortunately we do have a room. But the car issue has occurred to us, plus buggies, childcare, double everything ........ Actually on cars, there have been a few threads on here about putting 3 seats across the back - and apparently if you are clever about which seats you get you can get away w not having to get a new car, although whether that applies when 2 of the seats are 0-12mths I don't know.

Have fun telling your mum and have a fab Xmas!!

Catch you later...

CantSleepWontSleep · 23/12/2009 21:48

I need a car that fits 3 car seats too ladies. The Citroen C4 Grand Picasso def does (we looked at 7 seater version, but think they do a 5 too), I think the Ford SMax does, the Landrover Discovery does (we test drove one today and may well be tempted by a used one), the Volvo XC90, the Fiat Multipla I'm pretty sure. I guess it depends a bit on budget, as there are several MPVs that will fit them in. Or you can get one of these which might save you having to change cars at all .

CantSleepWontSleep · 23/12/2009 21:51

Oh and dimb - I'd agree with what Margot said. But would you be 'happy' to have a child with downs, or would it be a deal breaker, because that obviously could influence your decision?

MonkeyMargot · 23/12/2009 21:56

Thanks CantSleep for the car info. I wasn't aware the Landrover Discovery was an option - this will please my DH!

mampam · 24/12/2009 08:11

Congratulations to those of you expecting twins. I didn't realise having twins leaves you with so much to think about. I always thought that it would be things like, will one wake the other? How can you breast feed two at once? Not, getting new cars and moving house!!!!

WOW, good luck to you all for your busy times ahead

CantSleepWontSleep · 24/12/2009 08:39

Ah, the breastfeeding 2 at once is not really a problem mampam (though tiring naturally).

madamefreckle · 24/12/2009 09:54

Just a quick hello to everyone and have a Happy Christmas!

Anyone looking for a non-underwired t-shirt bra that is also comfy and good shape?(although not especially pretty or sexy) - Sloggi do a 'soft underwired' one which is fab. Just mentioning this because I've been hunting for ages and finally found what i was looking for (unlike Bono)

See this page!

Woofie · 24/12/2009 10:02

Hello ladies-

Just checking in to wish you all a very happy Christmas! Hope everybody's passed the barfing stage and can enjoy a bit of indulgence tomorrow.

Welcome and double congratulations to margot and playftse! 3 sets of twins on one thread - what are the odds?

dinosaur - i basically agree with what's been said - 1/120 is still very long odds, but i guess whether you decide to go for amnio depends on how big the issue is for you. Sorry you're having to worry about it at Christmas - that's the downside of screener tests i guess. Good luck in making your decision.

mampam - sorry to read your family's been going through a tough time, but great that dh seems better and hope you manage to enjoy the hols together.

Well I'm feeling pretty Christmassy, as it's chucking down massive snowflakes outside and ds is practically beside himself Slight cloud put over the holiday by my boss hinting that my research contract may not be extended after mat leave (our "understanding" had previously been that it would be extended til the end of my PhD in 2012). Still don't know anything for definite, so trying not to let it spoil the holiday with ds, but am sporadically pretty livid... I work in a research centre for child development - you'd have thought attitudes would've been a bit more enlightened. Really don't want to have to go through a tribunal - fingers crossed it won't come to that. Anyway...

Merry Christmas everyone
