Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
dinosaurinmybelly · 24/12/2009 13:19

Hello -

thank you everyone for your thoughts on the screening results. I wish I hadn't had this test now - it was kind of pushed on me because of my age (37) and I thought why not? , but really I should've thought it through. I would still be so happy to bring home an otherwise healthy baby, even if an amnio proved conclusively that this baby has Downs Syndrome, so there is absolutely no point in taking a miscarriage risk just so that I know for sure 20 weeks ahead of time.

I'm a bit cross that I had to go on the internet to find out that a thorough anatomical scan at 20 weeks can shed some light (although obviously not give as conclusive an answer as an amnio). This was not pointed out to me on the phonecall - I was simply asked if I would like to schedule an amnio. So - will try not to worry now until my scan on 8 Jan. Will be even more nervous about that scan now though...

So fantastic to have 3 sets of twins on the thread - I'm so looking forward to keeping up with everyone in 2010. Hope you all have a lovely Christmas!

bluesnowfalcon · 24/12/2009 18:07

MERRY CHRISTMAS ALL

Cadmum · 24/12/2009 18:27

Oh dimb... what a horrible set of circumstances. I never 'agreed' to have a nuchal scan at my appointment so I was somewhat surprised to be told the results at this appointment. (Things are slightly different here in Switzerland as the ObGyn has an ultrasound machine right in the office.) I cannot imagine how I would feel in your position except to say that I could not opt for an amnio and the associated risk. You are right to feel slightly bullied and annoyed. I can offer virtual hand-holding for your scan in January because I am petrified of all scans. I think that I might actually prefer to just stick my head in the sand like an ostrich. In some ways it would be much easier to find out at the birth about any complications. All this technology has its disadvantages sometime...

Both dh and I were nervous wrecks at my scan yesterday but all appears well and db# 5 has long feet like dbs#2 and #3 and a head shaped like db3. Fascinating to see the unborn little one. The heart-rate was 160 so if you believe the old wives' tale (and it actually did ring true for my other 4...) this baby might be a girl. Poor dd2 would be in for a massive shock as she is quite the princess.

Merry Christmas to everyone else!

london11 · 24/12/2009 20:58

This time last year I was on the Due June 09 thread and had just had my 12 week scan which showed twins!

They are 6 months old tomorrow and I just wanted to tell you ladies expecting twins how great it is. Hard work, knackering and completely time consuming but absolutely wonderful.

Good luck to you all with your pregnancies and merry christmas!

CantSleepWontSleep · 25/12/2009 07:22

Merry Christmas everyone!

greensnail · 26/12/2009 10:02

Hi all, hope everyone's had a great christmas. We're exhausted here after DD's 1st birthday on christmas eve and then the big day itself, can't imagine how busy things will be next year with a new baby thrown into the mix too

Looking forward to a quieter day today. Bump is fluttering away, so think he's enjoyed the festivities!

whenwillisleepagain · 26/12/2009 15:54

Happy belated Christmas everyone. Don't know about you, but I'm a bit weary. Thought second trimester would mean I felt back to normal - but now I remember - it's just that you feel relatively a lot better compared with first few months.

Very exciting news about the twins on the thread - congratulations!

GibberingGinger · 26/12/2009 22:26

Hope everyone had a great Christmas. Mine has been ok - low point being daughter with flu who has been pretty hard work all week. Unfortunately we didn't realise how ill she was initially so went ahead with a trip on the Santa Express local stream train on Christmas Eve. Was a disaster - like something out of Supernanny or something with howling, ridgid child and lots of other families tutting as she howled inconsolably for 45 minutes and ruined their Chirtmas trips. . Ah well, I'll never see these people again in my life so there is no point feeling embarrassed. High points are getting lots of sleep whilst Granny and Granda look after her!

Hi to all the new joiners. I can't believe the list is getting so long!

dragonrides · 27/12/2009 14:26

Hello, hello everyone! I was referred to this thread by two other twin carrying ladies . It is my first pregnancy and found out about the twins at my first ultrasound at 11 weeks. The due date is 6/27/2010, although most likely they will arrive before that. They will be mix of Asian and Caucasian, can't wait to meet them . I had a little bleeding after a 3.5+1.5 hour flight at the beginning of week 12, but all seems to be normal after we returned, now I am at the end of week 13.

If you have discussed these issues previously, I apologize, but these are the questions I have right now:

1)If plane ride does expose you to radiation (that's what I read, a 30-hr flight expose you to radiation equivalent amount of taking a Chest X-ray). And whether the bleeding could be from the air pressure change - since I bled (fresh) right after the outbound flight then had (brown) spotting after the return flight.

  1. What are you ladies doing in terms of getting DHA? I have decided not to take fish oil and instead taking the 1:1 ratio flax oil and safflower oil.

  2. Water: I am using RO water, but a friend said it also deprives the minerals in the body...any suggestions on getting minerals from food sources?

gaelicsheep · 28/12/2009 00:39

Hello everyone. Can I join please? I'm a lapsed regular under a new name.

I'm coming up to 15 weeks and rather embarrassingly have forgotten my due date - 22 June I think. There's just one in there thank goodness. I have one 3 year old boy already so I'm secretly hoping for a girl, but obviously will be happy with a healthy baby whatever flavour it is.

I'm feeling much better now than I was - though I was never as bad as some of you poor folks. But I'm mighty peed off, as we are now entering our second week of being snowed out of our house. Can't get the car up the ungritted, unploughed hill and the walking up and down in temps down to minus 15 degrees is not at all funny (we're in Highland Scotland, did you guess?) If I get my way we'll be moving closer to town before next winter.

(Sorry to start my posting with a moan btw). Hope everyone had a terrific Christmas. xx

MrsAlwaysRight · 28/12/2009 09:18

A belated Merry Christmas to everyone. We are having some building work done and it is playing havoc with our internet connection!

How exciting that there are even more twins expected!!

Has anyone else been feeling really faint? I am on an almost daily basis. If I stand up for more than a few minutes at a time I suddenly feel all hot and faint and have to lie down quickly. Seems to be worse in the morning and always after I've eaten. Not sure if its blood pressure related as I've always had readings at the high end of normal. Am seeing the Midwife on Thursday so will mention it to her then.

Hope everyone who has been feeling sick is starting to feel better.

GibberingGinger · 28/12/2009 19:26

Back home - its lovely to be away at Christmas but I'm so glad to be home again.

Hi dragonrider and gaelicsheep, welcome to the June thread.

I'm afraid I can't help with any of your questions dragonrider. I'm pretty much carrying on as before as not making any special dietary adjustments and trusting everything to be fine. It worked ok last time.

Gaelicsheep, I too am a highlander and just had a four hour trip from Inverness to Perth. Not good. A combination of low sun, frozen windscreen washers and slow drivers. But very pretty with miles of sparkling snow!

Unfortunately nausea is still lurking, but seems to be now caused by heartburn! Ah the pleasures of pregnancy! Hope the rest of you ladies are coping ok. Most of us are well into 2nd semester so hopefully a few easy weeks for us all

greensnail · 28/12/2009 20:36

I'm also back home today after christmas. Glad to be home, but wondering where to put all the new toys! Going to need a major sort out tomorrow I think.

Welcome to the newcomers. dragonrides I flew a lot in my last pregnancy, longest flights being to australia and back at weeks 28 and 31 which i needed a doctor's note for. Doctor was only concerned about the possibility of me going into labour on the plane, and did not say anything about radiation. DD is fine, so no obvious problems caused by any variation. I had several bleeds during the pregnancy but I never related any of them to air travel. Although now I think about it 2 of them would have occurred a few days after flying (1.5 hour flights).

CantSleepWontSleep · 28/12/2009 20:56

Welcome dragonrider and gaelicsheep.
You do know gaelicsheep that as soon as you say that you are a lapsed regular all of us old timers are going to wonder who exactly you were!

MrsAlwaysRight - have you been tested for diabetes? I would recommend that you do get tested asap from what you say.

I've never read that about radiation dragonrider. I thought that flying was supposedly safe. Although I tend to avoid it after I lost my first baby a few days after a flight - just a superstition rather than believing that there's really a problem with it.

What is DHA?
What is RO water?
As long as you are eating a normally healthy diet then there should be no need to faff about with it.

gaelicsheep · 28/12/2009 23:42

LOL Can'tSleep. I know your name but I don't think I was very memorable. At least this way I get to have a sense of mystery that I never had before.

Nice to meet a fellow Highlander GibberingGinger. This is only our third winter up here - we're hardening up fast, but I still can't get over the amount of snow we've had this year!

Saucepanman · 29/12/2009 01:28

Hello all, I am freaking knackered all day and insomniac at night! We have not been out of the house since xmas day and I am feeling like a very crap mum

dragonrides · 29/12/2009 03:06

CantSleepWontSleep: DHA (also EPA) are essential for the brain development, they are the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil (fish get them from algae). I was concerned about taking fish oil because of the heavy metals and pollutants so I was using Flax Oil and Safflower Oil instead, so far it works well. DHA/EPA are important for second trimester, you will find them in some prenatal vitamins.

RO stands for Reverse Osmosis, it's a water filtration system that removes all chemicals (pesticides, chlorine, etc.) out of the water and unfortunately it removes all the minerals in the water as well. I get them from Whole Foods (health grocery store chain). After my first post, I actually tested the drinking water at the house (I am in the US), I have a charcoal filter, it passes all the lead/pesticides, nitrate/nitrite, pH/Hardness/chlorine test but surprisingly failed the bacteria test! So I am still drinking the RO water until I find out what's going on. In the US I guess the water quality may not be as good, since tons of chemicals are used for farming and they pollutes the water system...virtually all municipal water contains traces of pesticides.

whenwillisleepagain · 29/12/2009 07:15

Hello everyone

think I am having one of my worst Christmases ever. After much dithering was due to have SF vaccine today, but think I may have gone down with SF over the last few days - DS who's 3, started with cough on Christmas Day, and by Boxing DAy was doing yo-yo-ing temp and more. Which meant I haven't seen my own family all Xmas, just DH's. Am cursing myself over the SF vaccine - got diagnosed with shingles about 4 weeks ago and with hindsight, maybe should have decided then that I was a bit run down and had the jab. Hey ho. 18 weeks pregnant today. At least DS is on the mend and DH still ok.

MrsAlwaysRight · 29/12/2009 08:40

CantSleepWontSleep no I haven't but will mention it to Midwife on Thursday. Thanks!

GibberingGinger · 29/12/2009 14:03

Oh whenwillisleepagain, poor you. I hope it isn't swine flu. I'm beginning to wonder if DD had swine flu. Husband seems to be coming down with whatever she had now, but it seems to be avoiding me. Is this cause I have an amazing immune system? - or cause its swine flu and I got the vaccine? Who knows. Anyway I hope you are feeling better soon, and if it is SF then at it seems to be more problematic really late on in pregnancy so try not to worry too much.

RnB · 29/12/2009 18:11

Hello All, I hope you had a lovely Christmas. I went out for a meal with my family on Christmas day, it was utterly vile, such a disappointment

Anyway, so relieved to be feeling so much better now. Can and am eating whatever I want! And I can feel the baby moving so much, is kicking away as I type .

whenwillisleepagain · 29/12/2009 18:54

thanks GG - after much to-ing and fro-ing on phone to GP, who was amazing, I ended up with Relenza. It's probably not SF because the numbers where we live were miniscule last week, but agreed with GP to act as if it were (IYSWIM). Anyway, the minute I'm well enough I will have the SF vaccine, as this has been a worrying day with my temperature going up and down. I have been unable to lift my head off the pillow till about an hour ago. I guess the thing is that you'll probably never know what your DD and DH have got, but exactly as you say, SF sounds to be most dangerous late in pregnancy.

readysetgo · 29/12/2009 19:29

Hi everyone! Not posted for ages, been busy growing a little bump! I had my scan finally on Christmas Eve! One very stubborn, but healthy and wriggly baby in there. My first pair of jeans no longer fit, quite excited by it though! I had a lovely Christmas, really chilled with all the family. Hope you all did too!

imkeepingmum · 30/12/2009 11:43

Hello everyone, hope you all had a good Christmas. We had quite a bit of snow which made it all rather slippy and I fell on the ice which was a bit hair raising but no harm done. Anyway made up for it by getting engaged on Christmas Day

MrsAlwaysRight · 30/12/2009 12:32

Congratulations imkeepingmum!

One of my friends who I met through my post natal group text me to say she is expecting as well so thats 3 of the original 5 with another on the way. Will be nice that we are all due within 2 months of each other!
