Congrats Bearus!!!

Wow - a son - that makes 5 boys on the thread versus 6 girls I think. Looking a bit more balanced now

Did you have a preference by the way?

If littleoldme finds out she is having a DS as she suspects then it will be 6 all.

Actually ladies, I have something to get off my chest.

Yesterday I was at my mum's and so was my sis with her 3 kids - aged 5,3 and 1. The 5 year old is a sweetheart and the 1 year old is obviously a delicious little baby. But my 3.5 year old nephew is a little horror.

I love him dearly but I'm ashamed to admit I don't like him!

I feel so guilty admitting how I feel. He displays a lot of aggresion towards my 2 year old DS. He is violent towards him and tries to intimidate him. He clearly is very jealous that he is not the centre of attention anymore.

Yesterday I saw him grab DS by the nose and shake his head! I flew off the handle, shouted at him telling him he was being very unkind and snatched DS away.

I can't believe I lost control but it was the last straw after watching him bully DS all afternoon.

Now I feel like an evil murdering wretch of an auntie. My sis was cool about it admittedly - backed me up and told nephew off as well. It's just that she puts it all down to 'boys will be boys'. Whereas I think a 3.5 year old is old enough to be punished for hitting and absolutely not allowed to hit other children without being reprimanded.

Am I being precious about my DS?

I don't think I would be precious about my sis telling my DS off if he was violent towards her 1 year old.

Thoughts?

Bearus · 12/07/2007 15:36

Thanks Choudru - I had no particular preference either way but a little boy means I can experience both sides of the coin - even if it does mean getting wee in your face when changing nappies!

I must admit, i would have behaved in much the same way as you with your nephew. It's only natural to want to protect your son. You're right - 3.5 years is old enough to know that violence is wrong and should be reprimanded, although sadly, I know plenty of children that age whose actions just seem to run away from them sometimes. Well done for standing your ground. I prob would feel bad about if after like you, but I think he has now learned a lesson. Please don't beat yourself up too much about it. It makes it seem much worse because it's your sister's child, eh?

littleoldme · 12/07/2007 16:17

Glad all went well for you Bearus and well done for finding out.

Everything was fine with the scan. As I suspected we are having a boy he did a fantastic legs open flashing shot which the sonographer pictured for us to - ' get out on his 18th birthday." Dh and I exchanged wry looks but mamged to stay quiet.

Choudru - between scanning, oversleeping and going out for lunch - I won't be making to Yoga. I've still got too many effing papers to mark.
I don't thng you being unreasonable about your nephew. He's obviously seeing how far he can push the limits and needs them setting.

Sparkly - hope your day has improved.

nykate · 12/07/2007 16:41

Choudrou- 3.5yr is absolutely old enough to understand no hitting! It is so tough to jump in and reprimand someone else's child for being agressive (esp. a relative), but sometimes it must be done. Good for you.

I'm having a bit of an aggression issue with my 3.5yr DD1 around her 1.5yr DD2. Not hitting, but just manhandling to get her to go/do what she wants. Sometimes it's even showing affection- knocking her over with hugs, etc. So frustrating when it's your own DC, so can imagine when it's someone else's. Anyone else have DC go through a phase like this?

Congrats Bearus!

nykate · 12/07/2007 16:42

Congrats littleoldme! Glad all went well.

choudru · 12/07/2007 17:31

Congrats littleoldme - so you were right after all! How do you feel about having a son then?

Sorry you won't be at yoga - I can't make it next week or the week after so I guess I'll see you next month.

Thanks for the non-judgemental comments on nephew - he did used to be a cutie before he got to the age of 2. I think he had all the attention and then we moved closer so all of a sudden he had to share the spotlight with my DS. Sis then had another DS so he's probably fighting for attention now - good or bad!

I had a chat with my mum who told me that I shouldn't feel guilty because he needs to know that he can't 'get away' with hitting.

I don't know how I will handle it if DS is behaving that way at 3.5. He can be violent now at the age of 2 but from what I read, they can go through stages of hitting, biting, pinching etc at this stage.

How do you teach them to stop? Do they grow out of it or do you have to intervene?

littleoldme · 12/07/2007 17:43

Choudru - funnily enough I'm quite relaxed about having a boy. I did really want a girl but as I've felt him wriggle about and seen him on the screen I'm delighted.

I'm annoyed I can't get to yoga. My papers are supposed to all done by mon and I'm only half way though. I've got a weeks extension but I really have to get on with it. I was going to start to early but over slept then spoke to a friend who lets just say needed me to deliver chocolate and tlc.The the scan. End result - busy night.

What's your moving date?
TMI - I've had thrush almost constantly since being pg I've tried canesten and tea-tree. I know I should talk to MW but anyone got any miracle cures? (hmm

ara · 12/07/2007 18:00

Ooh congrats littleoldme and bearus!!!

Glad it all went well and you got some lovely news too!

I ws trying to have a sneaky peek at our scan but couldn't see anything at all!! I think the sonographer even showed us the view from underneath but i wasn't quick enough to have a good look!

Choudru, I don't think you should feel bad or worry - - my mum had a nine yr old visiting her and my dad with his parents a few weeks ago, who was hitting, punching and biting the adults. No behavioural issues as such, just spoilt and not well behaved or mannered! Your sis obviously doesn't think you were in the wrong and it's doing him a good turn in the long run.

Littleoldme, i just had a terrible attack and got canesten from the docs. I got it after getting cystitis and being put on antibiotics. I'm wondering if it's been totally cleared tho as i was a bit sting-y t'other night during some ...erm ...evening stuff with DP!!

I don't know of any miracle cures apart from yoghurt really, but it's a bit messy!

littleoldme · 12/07/2007 18:52

Thanks for the advice ara. I think it's off to the docs.

Just put a steak pie in the oven mmmmmmm.

Hi All,
Am new to preganacy and to mumsnet. Boy due 2nd Nov 2007. All seems to be going well so far, biggest challenges are controlling my huge appetite, trying to find a comfy positon to sleep in and trying to agree on a name with hubby. I've found reading your posts really helpful and feeling a lot less isolated than I was.
Thanks girls !

LizzieO · 30/07/2007 16:37

Hi all
blimey this thread is so busy its hard to keep up, have been told that i need to go for a GTT scan this week, as a blood test showed up high glucose levels 7.9 (if that means anything) i had just had a bottle of lucozade, which incidentally i have been having most days ? Anyone here had Gestational Diabetes ?
I know it generally goes away after preganancy, but it can cause large babies and could mean the rest of my pregnancy having to watch my diet

Any firsthand experience would be gratefully rec'd x

revelyell · 30/07/2007 19:55

hi lizzieO
goes fast doesnt it! i cant keep up either. join everyone over on 'still blooming and getting bigger' thread, its the recent extension of this one. my sugar levels came up on my routine bloods as 7.2 and i had to go in again to have a speciifc glucose tolerance test- is that what you've had? the second test just meant having blood taken, drinking one whole bottle of lucozade straight down (scientific isnt it) then having blood taken 2 hours later. it was totally fine and the MW said that it was often down to having had lucozade or chocolate the morning of the first test which gave skewed results. so probably you are fine?
anyway- go to the other thread as we are all there!
