Hi everyone, I'm so silly I thought the thread had been super quiet for a few days and just realised it's full!! Finally found you again :)
My induction is booked in for tomorrow, I'll be 12 days over. Im feeling strange today, really excited but also super nervous. All getting real now!

EekThreek · 09/01/2018 17:16

Ooh @MummyM33 that's exciting, good luck!

Allmychildrenhavepaws · 09/01/2018 20:24

mummym33 good luck!
mummy87 sorry to hear about previous birth, i had emergency section last time too, got to 10cm, pushed for 2+ hrs, failed forceps then section. Fingers crossed for a successful vbac this time for both of us!

Alot of strong period crampy contractions here, but im sure its just prodromal/pre-labor.. They're quite painful too...just have to wait for them to become consistent and stronger, and I'll toddle off to the hospital haha Confused

Mummyme87 · 09/01/2018 20:33

allmychildrenhavepaws fingers crossed this is labour starting for you!!

Mortigua · 10/01/2018 09:10

Allmychildren how are you getting on? I've had odd periody cramps and some that are like a pulled muscle today but after a promising start of every ten mins they are now random so must be a false labour/BH thing. Sad

cheshiremama89 · 10/01/2018 09:26

Would appreciate thoughts on the below and what you ladies have planned regarding injections after labour ...

Vitamin K for baby, very recommended by midwife at birth class but discredited in hypnobirthing book.

Same with the injection to encourage a quick delivery of the placenta after birth...

Also with the above injection, can anyone recall it being bigger than usual? Watched a recommended positive birth story yesterday and the injection was a whopper!

Kind of feel pressured to have both, but would love to know what everyone else did/thinks xx

StylishDuck · 10/01/2018 09:43

@cheshiremama89 I went for both injections after my first and I'll be doing the same again this time. I had had an epidural the first time so I didn't even notice how big the injection was to deliver the placenta. I have to admit I hadn't heard about the vitamin K injection being discredited. In what way?

Mummyme87 · 10/01/2018 10:03

I’ll be having vitamin k injection for baby. Absolutely recommended for all babies. Have you ever tasted vitamin K? It’s putrid 🤢

And I will be having injection for placenta as had a previous PPh. If you are high risk of bleeding then it is recommended.

Check out NCT, NHS, AIMS websites on these topics

Mummyme87 · 10/01/2018 10:04

Also oxytocin injection for placenta is an intramuscular injection to a fair size

How do you dictate a gentle birth for a baby? We cannot see what happens whilst the baby is coming through the pelvis. I have been a midwife for 12yrs and can not define a ‘gentle birth’ for a baby.. gentle enough that a baby is not at risk of haemolytic disease of the newborn

StylishDuck · 10/01/2018 10:49

Thanks @cheshiremama89 and @Mummyme87 . There's nothing in there to convince me not go for the injection for baby though.

Mummyme87 · 10/01/2018 10:53

Me either. One of the risks for HDN is prolonged jaundice... you don’t know which babies will get prolonged jaundice 🤷🏼‍♀️ Then by the time they have it, it’s too late

cheshiremama89 · 10/01/2018 10:54

Thanks all, really helps to speak to others as this is my first time and really trying to give hypnobirthing my best shot xx

ndo4000 · 10/01/2018 12:08

Still here having lots of irregular tightenings. Getting tired and bored now!

Mucus plug came away this morning so hoping that's a good sign.

Just waiting for my reflexologist to arrive with the clary sage now! Fingers crossed she does the trick.....

star1980 · 10/01/2018 12:13

I will be having both vit k and the managed 3rd stage. The placenta injection is because I have large fibroids and am at high risk of heavy bleeding post birth. I didn’t realise it was offered as standard.

ElleMcElle · 10/01/2018 12:22

@cheshiremama89 - I have been reading that book too and am also hoping to practice hypnobirthing. Katharine Graves is good on the mental prep for birth, but she is not a medical professional and the science-based research suggests that her advice here is a bit warped! She underplays the importance of the Vitamin K injection - it's potentially life saving. She's also wrong about Vitamin K in breast milk - that can only provide a tiny, tiny bit.

This article is good on the science behind it - www.forbes.com/sites/tarahaelle/2016/08/19/heres-the-truth-about-vitamin-k-for-newborns/#628efa181474

Mummyme87 · 10/01/2018 12:26

No I wouldn’t be taking medical advice from a hypnobirth instructor. I have not listened to my hypnotherapy music enough, cramming it in today and tomorrow

Allmychildrenhavepaws · 10/01/2018 13:31

cheshire sounds like you've bern given lots of good advice from these ladies...i wouldn't have a clue!
mortigua I've heard that with 2nd babies the pre-labor contractions can seem stronger/more intense than the first time round...as can your bh's....sorry, i cant remember if this is your 1st/2nd without going back over the thread! My head is like a seive atm Blush

mummyme87 thankyou, i would love for things to be progressing too, but have a feeling im just more aware of things/feelings 2nd time around...this could go on for weeks! I hope not, they will induce at 41wks if not here by then as im not allowed to go too far over because of previous section. Gosh, you've been a midwife for 12yrs! Wow! What are your views about sweeps for vbac'ers? My instincts are telling me to leave well alone, dont want to risk a cascade of interventions etc, had 6 sweeps last time which never worked. But if i get closer to that 41wk mark, and they start talking induction, i might consider a sweep then as a last attempt/resort?

Allmychildrenhavepaws · 10/01/2018 13:36

ndo4000 wishing you luck with the reflexology and clary sage...whenever I massage my bump with it (woth the almond oil, not neat) i 'do' get some strong genuine contractions! But they tail off after about an hour...i think I'll be considering reflexology/acupuncture by next week..

Which is supposed to be more effective at jump starting labor??? Acupuncture or reflexology???

EekThreek · 10/01/2018 13:54

I'm definitely having both injections again. Vit K as standard, because I don't see any good reason to refuse it.

Oxytocin - I had two of these first time because my placenta didn't detach straightaway. I ended up losing over a litre of blood, but this was only realised when they reviewed my notes during second pg. At the time they thought I had lost 600ml and I had iron tablets. In hindsight they suspect it was probably double that.

It didn't happen the second time, but that was a much better delivery all round.

to the poster who mentioned it... my contractions were much more efficient the second time - I went from a 12 hour active labour to 4 hours! Dread to think how much quicker it will be this time! 😱

OP posts:
Mummyme87 · 10/01/2018 14:16

allmychildrenhavepaws I’m a no sweep advocate. I think they are ineffective at the best of times anyhow, and on a previous CS I wouldn’t be fiddling too near a scar. That and the risk of causing bleeding and infection. A consultant I work very closely with strongly believes and has anecdotal evidence from his work that sweeps make infections sitting in the body worse for the baby, including GBS and E. coli. I had three last time. This time I have declined

Mortigua · 10/01/2018 17:23

Allmychildrenhavepaws yes I think that's true. This is my third but the gap means it's hard to remember. Also considering acupuncture or ...anything! Have had pains all of today on and off and some quite strong but they are too close together and in clusters if you see what I mean. Ugh. Pregnancy massage for me tomorrow.
Cheshiremama I will have had both those things with my other kids but don't remember the actual thing so must have been ok from a needle perspective for me or I would have been so distracted!

Allmychildrenhavepaws · 10/01/2018 17:27

Thankyou mummyme87 much appreciated advice...im definitely avoiding them this time round!
