We haven't even started thinking about things like prams and car seats! Do we need to do it so early? I naively assumed we had plenty of time. (First time parents!!)

Loulou888 · 07/05/2014 10:15

You have got plenty of time oklahoma but there is so much choice and it may take you several weeks to shop about/try them out. I think we had to wait around 2 months for our first pushchair as it was out of stock but majority are next day delivery

mum2kiss · 07/05/2014 10:25

Dd had a bebe confort seat...it was huge and ridiculously heavy! It was suitable from birth and didnt have the 2hr time limit on journeys for a newborn because it was lie flat. I had to get the chassis though because I couldnt carry it anywhere...

this time we will get the cybex aton. It advertises itself as being lightweight although I'm not convinced about that! Its the only one that goes with the buggy I want though so not much choice in the matter....

Hello, just added myself to the list after lurking for ages - finally starting to look really quite pregnant, and feeling much more human than the early days! Expecting DC2 12th Oct.

I haven't been following the thread religiously, but see there has been some discussion of prams recently. Just wondered if anyone with a toddler has had thoughts about double buggies? DD1 will be 26 months when this one arrives, and though she's a great walker, her hand-holding needs some work! Also, as we live in a city centre and walk loads rather than drive, and it will be winter, I'm keen to have the option of having them both strapped into a buggy. Any thoughts on Mountain Buggy Duet or Baby Jogger City Select (gutted that the city mini won't fit through our front door)? I'm not keen on Phil & Teds, and want something I can fit a carrycot and car seat onto, and ideally where my toddler can see the world and not the back of a seat!

For those expecting DC1, I can highly recommend the iCandy cherry - I love ours (lightweight even with toddler, really cosy with the footmuff and very compact and easy to steer), and will probably hold onto it for when DD1 no longer needs pushed and we can go back to a single. We also bought a lightweight Mamas and Papas umbrella-style stroller when she was about 11 months, but to be honest, though it's great to have in the car / take on a plane as it takes up less space, it's nowhere near as good to push (especially in a city of cobbled streets!), or as comfy for her.

LondonJen · 07/05/2014 11:23

Really enjoy hearing similar experiences Kirsti and Goats. I felt quite a flurry of more obvious movement when I was eating my tea last night. Typical food lover, just like his/her Dad!

I am employing a dogsitter for the first time this weekend. The lady is actually a nanny during the week. Obviously need to see how things go but occurred to me this lady could be future baby sitter as well! That made it seem very real and grown up. Eek!

Loulou888 · 07/05/2014 11:26

Had my 16 week appointment reassuring to hear baby's heartbeat. My suspicions have been confirmed and have an anterior placenta again like dd as I haven't been feeling that much movement. Midwife is kindly seeing me again when 23 weeks. She said its not strict to wait until 28 weeks so pleased about that as will be able to go off on holiday knowing all is okay

mum2kiss · 07/05/2014 11:45

Thats great about the extra appointment lou :)

me23 im glad you mentioned booking an appointment with the gp around 22 weeks. I was really concerned when my.midwife said I wouldnt be seeing her for another 3 months! Seems like an awfully.long time! I have a consultant appointment at 22 weeks though so probably won't need the extra appointment but it's good to know I could still book one if I want to have a quick check

TroubleAndFyfe · 07/05/2014 11:49

Great news loulou!
mum2kiss DS's big car seat is a Cybex and is really light, I can easily carry it down the street under one arm so there's a good chance the baby one will be light! We have a Recarro and a Graco baby seat, both fitted until he was around a year.

I've been lurking too after originally joining the November thread but my dating scan says 19th October!

16 week appointment later today. Generally feeling shattered, achy and huge! Really lacking in stamina at the moment and struggling to get my MA assignment finished (it was due in yesterday Sad.

Anyone else feel

canweseethebunnies · 07/05/2014 12:49

Oops!

Anyone else feeling like this?

binkybunny · 07/05/2014 12:50

mum didn't even think about car seats having a 2 hour travel limit! As we live 5 hours from family that's something I guess we are going to have to look into as we already have two trips planned in the first 2 months (one being Christmas Grin

Will have a look at the one you mentioned.

mum2kiss · 07/05/2014 13:21

When we were car seat shopping for dc1 bink we were told in both john lewis and mothercare that carry car seats are not recommended to be used for more than 2 hrs at a time (including when pushing them around with it attached to the buggy)because they are not lie flat and baby is unable to support their own head. I really really like the jane matrix car seat/carrycot but the pushchair is not suitable for our lifestyle. It lies completely flat and can be strapped into the car in that position. It can also be adapted to be like a standard carry car seat with a.more seated position. Love the idea just wish the travel system was more suitable!

Mbo33 · 07/05/2014 13:26

Hello.
First post ever here, have been watching for a wee while, due with our 1st on October 14th. Started to show in the past couple of weeks which is making it all excitingly real.
Just bought a cybex atom 2 from kiddiecare was only £140 with base. Rather pleased, but also puzzling where to store it just now. Have a rather large refurb to do on the house before October Hmm

TroubleAndFyfe · 07/05/2014 13:58

Welcome to all the newbies, there still appears to be a steady influx of October mums to be!
binky I believe you just need to take them out of the seat for a break after two hours which to be honest you'd probably need to do anyway for feeding and nappy change. Double check that though as I never had to use a car seat for more than two hours when DS was a baby.

porcito · 07/05/2014 14:22

The pushchair world is so complex! Here, my town is made entirely of cobbled roads, not quite sure what we'll do for a pushchair. Can't imagine it being very comfortable for a poor baby. People here seem to just carry them in homemade slings, but being the most accident prone human on the planet, I can see myself not fastening it properly and dropping the baby...

Still haven't felt anything at 19 weeks. I don't think I've even felt the bubbles yet. Have the anomaly scan tomorrow so getting nervous. I'm on exam supervision today as well - not sure how I'll make it without having to escape for the bathroom...

Stargirl7 · 07/05/2014 14:49

Good luck tomorrow Porcito! Sure it will be fine Smile My MW said you often don't feel bubbles/flutters until 22 weeks. I take it you're a teacher from the exam supervision...me too!!! Exam boosters all week and feel crap!

Seem to have dropped off, hope you don't mind me adding again!

ExcitedCJ · 07/05/2014 15:04

My 16 wk appt is in 14 minutes & my DH still has not arrived home to look after DD so I can go in peace! I'm going to have to wake her up & take her with me if he isn't here in 2 mins. Talk about adding to the stress. Hope I hear some galloping horses or chugging trains or whatever it is meant to be. X

ohthegoats · 07/05/2014 15:10

Crikey, I'm just starting to look for a doula for my due date of 28th September, and it seems that I'm going to have some problems finding one. Out of 7 contacted, no one has availability around my date. Really? Why do people organise doulas that far in advance? I thought I was quite early in getting on with it!

gunwalloe · 07/05/2014 16:34

One more day of pain until the dentist tomorrow. I can't believe the havoc this pregnancy is playing on my teeth none of my others had this effect

FlipFantasia · 07/05/2014 16:38

Ohthegoats am not surprised to hear that about doulas! I found they booked up crazy fast when I started looking (admittedly I was nearly 30 weeks as it was a last min thing!) and was stressed but then found the perfect doula, so all worked out. Hope the same happens for you! Having said that, I seem to be unable to get started on looking for a doula myself so I should get around to that!

Binky agree with trouble that you just need to have a little break before two hours. You'll be doing that anyway no doubt!

Interestingly, the car seat two hours thing is not a thing over here (in the US) at all - everyone keeps their newborns in car seats all day long (they all use things called snap & go's, very basic wheels that you fasten the car seat onto. They look naff but people love then!). The whole lying flat thing is not a thing here. People look at me like I'm mad when I mention it! Also not an issue here: forward facing pushchairs. But people are v good at keeping their babies rear facing until age 2 (we turned dd at 22 months and it was 'early'). It's interesting to see what's different from the UK!

We're not thinking about car seats for ages. We have to get a bigger car first! Plus gave a tonne of house and garden stuff still to do...

FlipFantasia · 07/05/2014 16:40

Porcito slings are great! I love my ergo (plus new born insert) but have friends who love Mai tais too. You don't have to grapple with acres of fabric if you don't want to!

Gunwalloe hope the dentist relieves the agony soon!

ExcitedCJ · 07/05/2014 17:22

Rats... I ended up in the EOU getting an anti-D injection! At least I got to see the LO again. Head is measuring 17+4, so I may be a little ahead of EDD. All is OK.

mum2kiss · 07/05/2014 17:28

Another thing to remember with car seats is that not all seats fit correctly in all cars so.you need to check that the seat you pick is compatible!

gunwalloe · 07/05/2014 17:51

Thanks flip
