ps weejo can I be nosy and ask what your company does? Blush

Missvaughan85 · 05/01/2014 15:28

Weejo, I don't think it applies to me as I work for a company that I run, my business partner couldn't do it otherwise her smp would stop. So the accountant said. But thanks I'll have to check that out. X x

ClarissaG · 05/01/2014 15:30

HungryHorace - it all around funding companies, Dragons Den type stuff, but a bit more serious, and I'm not a Dragon or else I wouldn't be worrying about money!

It is of course a dangerous place to talk about entitlements / tax here, as everyone's circumstances are different, but this website looked very comprehensive, and can be trusted.

HungryHorace · 05/01/2014 15:34

Maybe it's different as a company owner as opposed to being simply self employed? Confusing.

Does anybody know what I mean when I say I have a pregnant taste in my mouth? It's not metallic, it's just a bit urgh. :-/

I need to be productive. Any clues how?!

HungryHorace · 05/01/2014 15:35

Sounds really fascinating. Do you have to work stupid hours?

And no, I'm sure the Dragons don't worry about SMP / MA!

ClarissaG · 05/01/2014 15:36

Sorry Hungry Horace, yes, there is a lot I can do from home which is a help, but under no illusions about trying to work and look after a baby at the same time. ("Excuse me Mr Smart Executives in NY, can I please just drop off this conference call about the future of your company because my baby is screaming"......hmmm!!)

What do you do? (sorry if I missed the thread earlier and you said)

Also glad to hear maternal feelings are not abound with everyone. Personally I prefer puppies and lambs (oops, probably not the thing to say on Mumsnet)

ImMarmite · 05/01/2014 15:39

Name I had that dreaded feeling on Boxing Day along with spotting...I spoke to our gp surgery 'baby doctor' she sent me to epu for a scan. Having that feeling is very unsettling.

I'll be having a glass of champaign possibly 2 when I'm 12 weeks (on my wedding day) after that I probably won't bother although midwife said 1-2 units a week is fine!!

HungryHorace · 05/01/2014 15:45

I'm a trainee solicitor, Clarissa. I hate it though. Or, actually what us more likely, I hate where I work. They aren't nice at all and will shaft you as soon as look at you.

And no, you can't be doing that with your baby. Difficult to think about child care if it's only required intermittently though. Must be tough.

Not long til you get married then, Marmite. :-)

ClarissaG · 05/01/2014 16:06

Yep Horace, people can make or break a job, regardless of what the job is.

Talking of work, better get back to it!

whatareyoueventalkingabout · 05/01/2014 16:23

Hungry Horace how are they treating you as a trainee fof mat leave? Have a friend in similar position who is struggling. how does it work or have you not told them yet?

WeeJo08 · 05/01/2014 16:35

Lucy I am a translator & interpreter & I run a translation business, so I do translation & interpreting in the languages I speak & then have other linguists for other language combinations. I had to go down the limited company & VAT registered route because the majority of my clients aren't UK based.

Clarissa TOTALLY agree on the childcare thing - it p*sses me off so much when people say "Oh you work from home? That's great! You don't need childcare!" I usually reply, "Tell you what, I'll bring your baby into your office & see how you get on!!"

HungryHorace · 05/01/2014 16:41

Whatare, I'm already on mat leave with DD, so I'll actually only be going back for 6 weeks before finishing again!

Basically, they mucked me about a lot with the TC, so now I don't feel like I've got any loyalty to them. You can have 4 months off without having to account for it, then anything you have above that has to be added on.

They can't really do / say much however pissed off they are as it's discrimination. Is your friend pregnant or TTC?

Ooh, Jo, how many / what languages do you speak?

lucyfluff · 05/01/2014 16:58

Wow weejo you sound like a very clever lady Smile

WeeJo08 · 05/01/2014 17:14

Haha, Lucy that's only because you haven't met me that I seem like that!! Grin

Hungry I speak Spanish, Portuguese, French, German & Dutch.

HungryHorace · 05/01/2014 17:18

I'm impressed, Jo!

I speak English and have a few 'holiday only' languages, like German, Spanish and French, which I can read but not speak so well!

wejammin · 05/01/2014 17:30

Fascinating hearing about everyone's jobs, I love it Smile . I'm a child protection solicitor and I worked up to 38 weeks with ds but don't know how I'll manage this time - I feel so much more tired already! Going to try and cherish my mat leave this time, with ds I couldn't wait to get back and swapped my leave with DH so I went back at 7 months. It was the right thing to do at the time but I think I might feel differently this time.

travispickles · 05/01/2014 17:34

I am sooooo tired today. Not too nauseous but still having the runs every morning. How am I going to manage at school. Am a good 3 minute walk to the nearest toilet and frankly.... Well, not ideal!

ImMarmite · 05/01/2014 17:38

Looking for healthyish snack as I'm a hungry monkey!! Roast parsnips better than crisps??

wejammin · 05/01/2014 17:42

have you tried kale chips? Healthy and properly tasty.

WeeJo08 · 05/01/2014 17:47

I absolutely love languages so I think that's half the battle when it comes to speaking them! I worked in engineering for a number of years & just translated freelance but when I fell pregnant with DD I decided to make a change. I wanted to show her that you can do what you love! Sounds a bit woo when I write it down!! Smile

HalfPintPickle · 05/01/2014 17:47

Ooh... I love a roast parsnip! Yum. We've just had Spanish chicken and cous cous for dinner - it was quite yummy but didn't quite 'ht the spot' my tast buds are all over the place ATM!

Weejo, how lovely being able to speak all those Languages. That's one thing I wished I learnt more of when I was younger. Maybe after the little one is here I can do a course of something!

Hungry, I hope your colleagues are nice to you when you go back for your 6 weeks, is it about April time?

WeeJo08 · 05/01/2014 17:48

Wejammin Homemade or can you buy them - they sound yum!!

crazylady2013 · 05/01/2014 17:58

Wow, some of you ladies are doing some interesting jobs. I'm currently a final year PhD student. Not sure how I'm going to get it all done in time (wasn't thinking ttc would work so wellWink ). Have no idea on my maternity leave/pay will be. Not looking forward to going back tomorrow as I put my name down for exam invigilation for this week, which means I will only be getting home at 8:30pm. Oh well, will need to manage it as it will be extra money for the baby fundWink .

HungryHorace · 05/01/2014 18:05

Half pint, it's 6th March. Boo! At least it's not for long.

I then have to take all my annual leave before starting mat leave again on 28th May.

My direct colleagues will be fine. It's my superiors I'm worried about!

Feelingfatty · 05/01/2014 18:12

Hey ladies, some exciting sounding jobs!!

Good luck to all the ladies returning to work on Monday. Hopefully life returning to normal will make the 12 week wait of a but quicker...

I have not been feeling great this weekend. Struggling with the nausea. Did my tesco shop earlier and found it a BIG hardship!! Usually do it on a Monday though and roped dh in today so glad it's over and done with!!!

Had to go for a nap this afternoon, could have slept until bedtime I think! Got up to do dd tea though! Knew dh may not remember Confused yes seriously!! Anyway probably wouldn't have slept tonight if I stayed in bed any longer!!

Less than a week now until my private scan, this week can't go quick enough! (It's on Saturday!!)
