Thanks Lady and Mrsc. Only the occasional bout of mild nausea and retching at the moment - but it's early days (I think I'm about 4w+2 officially, 2w+2 going by when I think I ovulated...) so I'm dreading when it actually kicks in properly - it's going to make hiding it from work much harder...

Good luck for your booking in appointment Mrsc!

Oh, and can I ask a question related to appointments as this is all new to me? We don't live v far from a hospital which has a fairly good reputation for its maternity services, so I used their self-referral form to get in touch, and they sent me an auto reply saying they'd be in touch in 2 weeks.

However, I wasn't sure if I still had to see my GP, so I phoned the surgery and they want me to come in next week and said I had to book in through them. But it's fairly early days for them to do the proper booking in, right? I assume they'll either get me to test again to confirm or just lecture me on being healthy/foods to avoid/taking my folic acid (all of which I'm already doing - had to turn down blue cheese for the first time yesterday, sob!)?

What should I expect? Any questions I should ask at this stage? Thanks - I feel like I've taken in so much info since I found out and I'm a bit bewildered by it all Confused

Mrsc020987 · 07/11/2013 09:52

The way mine works is I see the midwife in my gps surgery, they are there only in on Fridays, as soon as I found out just call for booking in, have to let them no it's booking in as it's a double appointment, what I remember is it's just all checks weight blood pressure etc then all your background info, the give you all the nutritional stuff etc then they refer on for a scan etc but I have no option on hospital so not sure how that works, sorry!

elliejjtiny · 07/11/2013 10:23

Where I live you can book an appointment with the GP if you want. He/she will take your blood pressure and tell you to take vitamins. Or you can just go to the dr receptionist and ask for a booking in appointment with the midwife (usually done at 8-10 weeks).

The booking in appointment lasts ages. You get a booklet with all your details in that you take to every appointment. You also get a load of leaflets. The midwife will go through all your previous pregnancies, whether they were C-sections, if you had PND etc. Your family medical history, asking you if any of your grandparents had diabetes or some disease you've never heard of. They ask you if you know where you want to give birth but you don't have to decide yet. They will tell you what tests you can have, refer you for a dating scan if you want one, take bloods and a wee sample. They usually ask you if you've thought about breastfeeding. I think that's it.

mrsc I always photocopy my little book of notes before giving them back to the midwife so I can keep a copy. I pretend it's so I can copy all the details into the new book when I get pregnant again but really it's because I'm sentimental. I've still got the wire from ds4's apnoea monitor from when he was in nicu Blush.

Can't remember who said about nappies but I have 2 children in them. Not finding changing them too bad as only have mild nausea at the moment. DS4 is going into hospital when I'll be 8 weeks for 2 nights. Really not looking forward to that, I prefer to puke in the privacy of my own home.

ItsAlwaysBetterOnHoliday · 07/11/2013 10:40

Thanks all - that's really helpful! I can't quite work out how it works around here, I guess speaking to the GP next week will sort that out.

Ipsumlorem · 07/11/2013 11:29

Hi to blue and holiday! Grin

Feeling a bit pants today - fell asleep really early last night and could easily sleep right now despite being at work Sad

Was wondering when anyone plans to tell their work? I know its very early and I'm probably in a weird situation as I won't actually be allowed to carry out a lot of my work duties once they know - I'm debating whether it should happen next week as I will also have to give them time to find cover for some of my duties though it worries me its so soon Sad

dollydaydream27 · 07/11/2013 11:31

Hello please can I join?? I got my BFP last Saturday !!! EDD according to online calculator is15th JulySmile
I have had one day of really bad nausea that lasted 24 hours I was at work and am on my feet all day . Also have to deal with bodily fluids and managed not to puke ! I didn't expect to get these symptoms so early . I don't feel so sick today just starving all the time !
I have also been having aching type pains in my tummy and back for last week or so nice to know that's normal and just everything stretching down there.
Did another test this morning and the line came up in about 2 seconds very dark starting to feel very real now !
Not sure when to call gp really I am already taking folic acid . Would prefer just to see midwife in a few weeks?
Nice to meet you all !!!

dollydaydream27 · 07/11/2013 11:34

Ipsumloren , I'm a bit worried about telling work too . I know they will be fine with it it's just that I have to tell them fairly early which worries me .
There are certain things I can't do in my job and lots of risk factors I have to avoid . I have 2 weeks off in December so would love to wait til after then but I just have to be so careful.

Ipsumlorem · 07/11/2013 11:56

Hi Dolly!Smile

its a minefield isn't it? I've confided in 2 of my friends but they don't really understand because they don't have potentially hazardous jobs. I've technically been performing duties I shouldn't have been before I found out and 1 day since (nothing with major risk or I wouldve refused) but I felt sooo guilty Sad I know I should probably get it over with as id feel guilty if anything happened but its such a tough position to be in!

Ruggle · 07/11/2013 12:32

Hi girls

Sadly, I have to hop off this bus. Started cramping and bleeding last night, so this is my 2nd mc in the space of 3 months (11+4 and 5+2). I don't have any children of my own yet and I'm almost 39. Luckily I do have an adorable 5 year old step daughter to keep me busy....but I do desperately want one of my own. So I shall persevere and hope for third time lucky!

Wishing you all sticky beans and happy bumps!

x

ItsAlwaysBetterOnHoliday · 07/11/2013 12:46

Hi Ipsum and Dolly!

Work is a bit of a minefield for me because I'm a self-employed contractor - I'm starting a new contract soon and hoping to keep it under my hat for as long as possible, in the hope they offer me more work after this one is due to end. Seems a bit far in the future to be thinking but I'd like to work up until June (if possible with the pregnancy). Bit scared to be going into this without maternity pay, will just have to be very careful with money and time-off in the next few months! Lucky that it's a mostly desk based job though.

If you do work in a potentially hazardous environment, though, I understand that you'd need to let them know sooner. It does feel too soon to tell anyone really, so I understand where you're coming from! The only people who know so far are me, DH, a manager at a indoor rock climbing centre where I had to cancel a course this week (impeccable timing) and the nosy bookshop assistant when they saw I was buying the Rough Guide to Pregnancy Blush.

Good luck when and if you do tell them.

ItsAlwaysBetterOnHoliday · 07/11/2013 12:47

Sorry cross post. Really sorry to hear that Ruggle. Take care of yourself. Fingers crossed for third time lucky. x

elliejjtiny · 07/11/2013 12:51

So sorry Ruggle. I've had 3 miscarriages myself as well as my 4 dc. Hope it's 3rd time lucky for you.

LadyGoneGaga · 07/11/2013 12:58

Really sorry to hear that, Ruggle. You be kind to yourself. You've been through a lot lately.

Holiday you should be entitled to Maternity Allowance for 9 months but you claim from the govt rather than your employer. Just depends how many hours you worked leading up as to whether you qualify. It's equivalent to SMP only without the first six weeks at 90% part. Although you don't pay tax on it which is a bonus.

I've told HR and my immediate line manager as have been having some time off due to awful headaches which i think are linked to the pregnancy. So helpes to get them off my back. Plus if anything did go wrong i'd need time off for that anyway. They will be discreet though.

Hello ladies, I am very happy to be joining you if that's ok? I got an unexpected bfp on Tuesday. I think I am due on the 12th. This will be baby number 4! We already have DS 15 and DS 13 then a very long gap until DD 2. We always said we would like 4 but DD was such a long time coming, we really didn't believe it would work out that way. So excited but worried too as I had cancer in my last pregnancy and had to have major surgery. DD is such a miracle, I am worried we are pushing our luck! Anyway, hopefully I will be with you for the long haul and everything will go much more smoothly this time. Congratulations to everyone!

Umanayana · 07/11/2013 14:46

Could someone please add me? Having problems on my phone. Thanks!

Newlywed2013 · 07/11/2013 17:57

I'm out!
Had my drs appointment and he said that because of the bleeding and since I have have had a negative test I am not pregnant anymore!

jaykay987 · 07/11/2013 18:43

so sorry newlywed. I've also started bleeding today. So may not be far behind you Sad.

LadyGoneGaga · 07/11/2013 18:56

Oh Newlywed, that is sad. Take care of yourself. Hope to see you back again with a sticky bean soon.

Hope you are ok, Jaykay. Is it much? Spotting or more? As I think I've mentioned before I did bleed with my son and it was fine. Hoping for you. Is your scan tomorrow anyway?

jaykay987 · 07/11/2013 19:00

thanks Lady.

I'm trying not to panic...but so far it's only when I wipe - no "drops" and it's brown. Started about 11am.

So had I didn't move my scan - it is still tomorrow. I'm really stressing.
When it started, I was surprised as I've had no pain at all. But ever since I've mentally logged every twinge. I'm sure I've been having these the whole time. but it's difficult to tell!

Haven't told DH yet. not sure if I should worry him.

Umanayana · 07/11/2013 19:21

Thanks for adding me Lady! So sorry to those who have had to leave. I hope you all get a sticky bfp very soon.

Umanayana · 07/11/2013 19:24

Fingers crossed for good news at your scan tomorrow jaykay x
