Ama when I was pregnant with ds (due in june) I was really worried about how to dress him and him over/under heating. They say dress babies in one more layer then yourself, but I just thought but I am always cold and wearing one more layer than everyone else so one more layer than me, or dh? But it wasnt that complicated when ds was born, feel babies chest with your finger to see if they are warm or cold. I also swaddled at night, so he either had short sleeved body suit or sleepsuit under.

I listened to friends and bought loads of muslins, didnt really see the need for that many atferwards. I mean they are washable..

BadMissM · 20/02/2013 21:25

VinegarDrinker Didn't have any muslins for DD...she was born in France and they are not common there...

Amadablam Pram/Carrycot sheets are generally a standard size.

I had a 'grobag' for DD when she was little, it was brilliant, and above all, safe.

Cheese and Marmitemad My mother pushed her luck trying for 'Auntie' when DD was born.... I didn't let her get away with it. I used to call my grandma 'Ouma'. My Dad is known by DD as Fafa, I used to call my grandfathers 'Fafa' and 'Oupa'

Dinky Also guess was a temperature thing between here and Paris. Didn't swaddle DD a lot as it was too damn hot!

VinegarDrinker · 20/02/2013 21:33

Re grandparent names - my Mum is Nana (her choice, fond memories of her own Nana), MiL is Grandma but DS calls her "Marmar", FiL is Grandpa but again DS has his own version "Papa" which I love and was my own Grandpa's name for the same reason! My Dad is Grandy - because his name is Andy :)

dinkystinky · 20/02/2013 21:36

How funny BadmissM re the muslins. Did you use bibs? I never used bibs on the boys - probably because I had a handy cloth to hand for all eventualities.

Loving the gp names. Vinegar - your Ds is too cute!

DS was born in warm June. I remember we all slept in our living room one night as it was coolest room in the house! Couldn't bring myself to just dress him in a nappy so think he was always in a vest but sometimes with just a muslin over him. I did swaddle on slightly less warm nights.

I think most of his newborn stuff was white. Felt appropriate in summer anyway.

Haven't bought anything for this one yet. I'll need some newborn stuff though as I borrowed quite a lot of stuff last time & bought from charity shops, which I then returned. I think a new blanket would be nice too. And maternity pads, nipple cream (used lansinoh last time, then gave away rest of tube as I only needed it for a week or so)... Can't really think of anything else!

CitizenOscar · 20/02/2013 21:47

PS 20+1 today but still 10 days to go til scan - trying not to be impatient!

TotallyEggFlipped · 20/02/2013 22:04

I'm always cold, so I always kept DD in one more layer than DH was wearing! It seemed to work well. She's just like him - always saying she's hot and taking her coat off. I'm sure she'd have overheated if he wore as many layers as me.

orangebubbles · 20/02/2013 23:31

Hello all Smile

Hope everyone is well.

Sorry if this conversation has been done and I missed it!
Sleeping: with DD we had her in a crib by the side of the bed, however, I had to get out of bed to pick her up (wont be so easy this time due to CS recovery) and didn't like not seeing her and she probably didn't like not seeing me! This led to a very informal co-sleeping practice which was less than great. So, this time round I'm looking at Babybay or bed nest (but will need a second mortgage for either of those options!). What are your thoughts/plans?

Have skim read to catch up, lots of good scan news.

About clothing, I'm cold so I dressed DD in one more layer than DH. She was born in a heatwave though so for the first two weeks of her life slept in a nappy with a muslin over her! To this day she loves running around with nothing more than a nappy on!!

Calmisthemantra · 21/02/2013 07:25

orange I have bought this from amazon.

Baby bed multifunctional 3 in 1 co sleeping cot by Infantastic

Took a bit of searching to find it but i got it for £75 incl mattress!!! Really happy with it as I wanted a co sleeper with dd1 but no way I could afford it. For dd1 I ended up getting the John Lewis Eric cot (£70), took off the drop side and butted it up against the bed and wall then filled the gaps between the mattresses with tightly rolled towels and it worked really well for us.

Let me know if you can't find it on amazon and I'll link from my computer

VinegarDrinker · 21/02/2013 07:56

We did the same as calm but with a cheap Ikea cot (£40). We used it as a co-sleeper til 1 then he moved with the cot to his own room and is in it still at just 2. I think we'll turf him out in to a toddler bed before the summer and do the same with the cot.

mysterymeg · 21/02/2013 08:15

TMI but top tip I discovered by accident yesterday - if anyone is suffering from (ahem) pregnancy constipation Blush I highly recommend eating a whole bunch of grapes in one sitting. Sorted it out in no time lol

bigbelly4 · 21/02/2013 08:52

20+1

dinkystinky · 21/02/2013 09:48

We'll be reusing the stokke mini cot we used for Ds1 and Ds2 - I co sleep for the first month and then pop them in that. It should just about fit into our bedroom (or rather into the shoe and handbag storage area just off from our bedroom once I've had a shoe and handbag cull).

Just popping on to say hi, I have posted on one of the old July threads before but then forgot about it. Smile Trying to remember this time as currently need people to talk to & keep me sane through work (bored, nothing to do & only me in the office) & keep me away from Internet shopping.

Oh & I'm due 20th July with my first. Grin

iclaudius · 21/02/2013 11:37

Paolo sorry for my mispelling name lazy me hooting another poster!
I haven't even got a scan date yet nor an exemption thing and I've only done one appointment which was booking ...
Not moaning but wondering slightly ....

iclaudius · 21/02/2013 11:38

Hooting ?? Copying !! I swear this new skinny iPhone makes my spelling 400 times worse -NOT feeling the love!

iclaudius · 21/02/2013 11:38

My baby is one today - scary !

Guavasforbreakfast · 21/02/2013 11:39

Just catching up. Lovely to hear scan news and thanks for all the advice on what baby wears in summer, had been wondering!
I'm only 19 weeks and spotted a STRETCHMARK this morning. It's the same colour as my skin so hardly visible, but HOW is that fair when my bump is hardly noticeable to the outside world?!?
Has anyone had them at this stage before, and were they much worse by the end? Am worried that if it's started now i'll be a zebra in 20 weeks time. I've been using bio oil and some extortionate clarins stuff i got from DP at Xmas, fat lot of good that did!!!
Sorry for rant. *sniff

19+2

dinkystinky · 21/02/2013 12:07

iclaudius - happy birthday to your baby. Doesnt sound right re no exemption certificate - definitely worth following up on.

Phie - if you havent already, add your date in to the waddlers and riders list (link to that thread second post down on this thread)

Guavas - use the oils and the stretchmarks will be less visible to you.

OP posts:
TotallyEggFlipped · 21/02/2013 12:29

iclaudius I had to go back to the GP surgery to ask for a form for the exemption certificate and leave it for a doctor/midwife to fill in & send off. The midwife didn't mention it at all and I only thought of it because I have to see the dentist soon. Only took about 10-14 days to get the card through.
Also surprised you don't have a scan date yet. Round here you ring up to make an appointment about 4 days after your 12 week scan, which is great, but they're really strict that you have to be within 3 days of 20 weeks. I wasn't allowed to book a scan for 20+4 when DH would be off work.
Happy birthday to mini-Claudius too!
