Evening ladies

Feeling a bit huffy as just got back from a really frustrating MW appointment. My faith in the NHS and the fact that having midwife care in one county and giving birth in another should not be an issue has been seriously shaken. First off it was not my allocated midwife (despite making an appointment at a different surgery to usual, just so I could see her). Then, they couldn't get my results from booking in up on the screen due to the different county thing, so the MW had to ring the hospital (after ringing a colleague to find out the number) and speak to three different departments to get the results. Except that they had no record of my blood group and antibodies tests. Then, I was supposed to be having bloods taken for the triple test today but this MW couldn't do that because they have a "different system" for taking blood at my hospital, which she hasn't been trained in (who knew, I thought a blood test was a blood test). Grrrrr. Anyway, after all that palaver I felt really rushed and only asked about half the questions I had on my list. Sigh...

OK rant over!

Cheekbyjowl and others who have commented on older hand-me-downs, my parents are trying to persuade us to have my old cot which they've kept in the loft all these years, bless them. It's a very sweet idea, and one I quite like in a way, but I think I will politely decline, especially after my dad commented that it may have gone a bit rusty! I think my main worry would be that the paint they used in the 70's may not be as child-proof as the ones they use now. But, to be fair, I am still here to tell the tale!

photographer I'm still taking antenatal vitamins as I was worried about my diet being so crap whilst suffering with MS. However, now it's got much better and I'm eating loads of fruit and veg again, I intend to save a few pennies and switch to just vitamin D when this pack runs out in about 2 weeks.

Beginningofthejourney · 28/01/2013 17:55

Just back from scan, all seems good, i'm just a little concerned the head circumference seems to be over the 95th centile hoping it doesn't keep growing at that rate, the consultant didn't have any concerns!

I've also had the 'was it planned comment' as I have not ring either! As this is an IVF baby I can safely say it was very much planned! Also had the would you prefer a boy or girl comments and if I use he or she people leap on it. I don't intend to find out although I near saw today as consultant was trying to check the cord between baby's legs but he/she kept them firmly shut!

I'm hoping to use a crib that my grandad made for when I was born, haven't got it out of mums loft yet to see what it's like though.

I still haven't put myself on the list, will remember one day when the computer is on.

shelley72 · 28/01/2013 18:10

i have also been getting the 'what are you hoping for' comments, which are driving me slightly mad. we have one of each, so i am not sure why i should have a preference though i know which one is easier. and my hairdresser asked if it was planned, even though i spent most of last year going on about how a third DC would be nice. Am 40 so you would think that people would realise that i dont have time on my side for these things!

i am still taking the preg vits photographerlady - i think at some point (entering third tri?) i usually take the ones with the omega 3 too. i also take spatone for iron as was v low on iron post birth last time around and on the lower side of normal this time at booking. and finally calcium and vit D as have been dairy free due to feeding DD so was advised to take quite a high dose by the hosp. just gone back to dairy recently so hopefully as soon as the pack is finished i should be ok. have been pregnant/ BF for what seems like FOREVER. one day i will be back to normal!

AmaDablam · 28/01/2013 18:12

I've had a few people asking "was it planned?" too and I'm married! I think it's just one of those questions some people feel the right/need to ask. I've also been surprised by the first words out of several people's mouths after "congratulations" have been "do you know/are you going to find out what you're having?" As it's our first people haven't really made assumptions about what we'd prefer, but I can imagine it's really frustrating when they do.

Feel a bit sheepish for my rant earlier. At the end of the day I'm (so far) having a very straightforward pregnancy and for that I am very grateful. I seem to have cured my mini-rage anyway by stuffing my face full of opal fruits (yes I know they are called starburst now but they're still opal fruits to me!)

shelley72 · 28/01/2013 18:17

ana no, you rant away. i had my booking bloods taken three times last time as they got 'lost' (same area and everything) so nothing surprises me any more!

and you do know, dont you, that once you have your first child, you will be questioned as to when you are having another! as soon as you are pg it seems you are public property! perfect your 'smile and nod' action now. it will come in handy come july Smile

and they will always be opal fruits!

SundaySunshine · 28/01/2013 18:18

Ama the MW situation sounds really frustrating. I've chosen to give birth in the county next door, but I also have my MW appointments at that hospital. They have said I can have local MW, but I felt I wanted to keep with the same MW team, I guess I was subconsciously wary of all the possible cock ups that could happen.

Photographer I'm taking pregnacare mainly because my diet has been so crappy, and also because I didn't manage to keep any supplements down during the raging MS, so trying to make up for it now.

beginning great news on your good scan. I did wince a little for you re head circumference Grin

AmaDablam · 28/01/2013 18:41

Thanks ladies.

Haha yes, Shelley I know all of this, mostly because I have been guilty of asking the exact same question of various friends. I try not to do it now, especially after I realised how annoying it was when, as soon as I got back from honeymoon 18 months ago, people started asking if we were TTC yet! Oh, and I got asked the other day "so do you want a big family then?" Firstly, err, one thing at a time. Secondly at getting on for 36 I'm just grateful to have conceived DC1 with relative ease. I make no assumptions that further DCs will follow whether wished for or not, so why would others do so? Confused

photographerlady · 28/01/2013 18:59

Thanks ladies, I'm vegetarian but been lacking any adventurous eating... Ok I've been living on toast, raw fruit and veg. Oh snacking on crisps.. So going to make more of an effort and take my vitamins again.

beginning firstly congrats on your pregnancy. I do I hear you on the stupied question front. I took off two months for IVF/egg share and my boss still asked if it was planned. He's a bit simple and after treatment didn't work I went quiet for months, I took clomid as a last resort thankfully only took one cycle and here I am :)

dinkystinky · 28/01/2013 19:14

Ama - with Ds1 my records were lost several times - all in the same hospital! V v annoying so no wonder you are feeling the rage.

Glad your scan went well Beginning - plenty of time for the baby's head to go down a percentile or 5 before D-day!

Huffpot · 28/01/2013 19:49

Hi sticks head around corner

Can I join?

I'm due on the 27th July with DC3! Eeeek!

flyingsprocket · 28/01/2013 19:56

Hi huffpot welcome Brew

TomDaleysTrunks · 28/01/2013 20:31

hello my old pal! We even have the same due date! (it's facecrack/cheese btw)

CitizenOscar · 28/01/2013 20:47

Badmissm - have you looked at city jogger mini (or baby city jogger, something like that can't remember exact name)? Apparently super easy to fold & look a bit more comfy than Maclarens (I think you can steer it one handed which you can't with maclaren, useful if you want to push and drink or text or hold an umbrella).

princessllama · 28/01/2013 21:02

hello all, v brief as knackered (dh set his alarm for every hour last night by mistake...). went to look at uppababy cruz and vista today-what i gleaned in the10 mins b4 had to get dd from school is that cruz is the newer version and is slimmer so easier for bus, vista won't go in front doors of a bus-no brainer in london. also, sadly the cruz isn't recommended by uppababy for night sleeping as not ventilated from below unlike the vista-hmm would it be fine anyway or would i spend nights worrying? amazing shop btw-called Huggle, in north london.
right sleep

dinkystinky · 28/01/2013 21:15

Welcome Huffpot - hope all well with you.

Princess llama - Juggle is lovely isn't it! Check out the classes with your baby if you live near there - I used to take DS1 to Neil's music class before I went back to work and loved it (he kept going till he was 3).

dinkystinky · 28/01/2013 21:15

Frigging autocorrect - meant Huggle!

lizincornwall · 28/01/2013 21:17

Hi girls, glad I found you!
Rant away - things can get so frustrating, especially with appointments that you psyche yourself up for, that you need to let off steam somewhere Wink

Has anyone trried hypobirthing? I saw questions about it earlier, but who's tried it? We've booked it this time around as i feel i panicked & forgot everything had a difficult labour the first time, so am aiming for a calmer approach this time. Dillusional?

lizincornwall · 28/01/2013 21:18

Oh, just changing my due date to 2 weeks later (seems so far!!!)

Cutandstick · 28/01/2013 21:24

Hi all, any recommendations for maternity pillow. I'm a back sleeper trying to convert to a side - any side would do! Something that's useful and reasonably priced would be good!
After much dilemmaing about whether I'm 'fussing', saw GP today about my stupidly painful ribs that have been keeping me up at night (Grrrr!). Apparently some cartilage is inflamed, after a very thorough check its not a clot... Nothing to do with baby. Get home and DP says 'you're going to have to get used to being uncomfortable' Angry ahhhhhhhh! If he only realised how much else IS uncomfortable and I know is 'normal', that after the MW said the ribs weren't normal I out off the docs for 2 more weeks for fear of fussing, and the lack of sleep from rib pain has turned me into this ranting bitch crazed halfwit.
Paracetamol by my side and the osteopath booked for Friday I am planning to SLEEP!
Maybe I should be on the is this unreasonable thread! Lol! Night x

Cheeseandbread · 28/01/2013 21:37

I can't remember who was asking about boobs (am on my phone) but I too have had erect nipples from the beginning. I also have tingling daily.

I thought I may have felt a flutter just now probably just indigestion
Also I've been told I have an anterior placenta so probably won't feel anything for a bit.

lizincornwall · 28/01/2013 21:43

Hey cutsndstick, i'm trying the John Lewis v-shaped pillow this time. Only just getting used to it - it's VERY plump.
Borrowed a dream genie from a friend last time, & i have to say it was really comfy (but i couldn't justify buying one!)

CitizenOscar · 28/01/2013 21:44

Lizincornwall - I did hypnobirthing last time. Did help me keep calm during long (2 day) early stage but transferring to hospital at 6-7cm basically destroyed my mental calm. An thinking about how to retrain myself for this time. Might try a natal hypnotherapy CD or something.

dinkystinky · 28/01/2013 22:00

Liz - did hypnobirthing for ds2's birth and was money well spent IME.

Cut - I have a dream genii from before - comfy but you could get lots of pillows to wedge you in place for less money...

dinkystinky · 28/01/2013 22:03

PS you will use pillows lots in the early days of bring so can put them to use again...

paolocee · 28/01/2013 22:09

dinkystinky Yes, she's slathering herself with Bio-oil every night. She's actually totally fascinated with how her body's changing. It's really nice.
