My newborn girl is going to die, not sure what to do now.

I gave birth to our little girl yesterday at 1.15pm. They told almost straight away they thought she had Edward's Syndrome. Now they think her brain just didn't develop. Noone can tell us how long she will be with us, nobody knows.

My two dds are 6 and 4 and were so excited about their baby sister. They are coming to meet her later. How can I tell them she will die?

As she is breathing unaided and tube feeding, they are caring for her in SCBU, but I have said if they can't do anything, I want to bring her home to spend her last time. I wish we knew how long she had.

I think my heart is breaking.

Oh Cupofteaplease, I have just read this whole thread and like many others couldn't leave without saying something.

Beatrice is just so beautiful, and how fortunate she is to have been given to such a loving family who will cherish her every moment. My prayers too are with your family at this time. I hope you have a good weekend together.

MurunBuchstansangur · 29/09/2011 22:14

I am so sorry to read this, you have my heartfelt sympathy. This also happened to my mum, she gave birth to a little girl with Edwards Syndrome when I was 3 years old. I dont remember it but my mum said i was so excited about having a baby sister and she was unsure how to tell me she was going to die. My mum sought advice from her consultant. He advised her to bring me into the hospital to meet my baby sister, as otherwise I would be confused and blame myself for her not coming home etc. My parent took the advice and I met my baby sister. They told me she was poorly and that she was going to live with the angels. I told her what a little nappy she had on and that I loved her. And apparently I never asked about her again while i was very little, the consultant's advice seemed to work for me as i just seemed to accept what i was told. They then decided to turn off the life support machine, she lived till she was 2 days old.
I asked my mum how she got through it. She said already having me helped her to keep going, and she has learned to live with her loss as time has passed. Not much of consolation for you to hear that now as you are going through this in the present. I want to send you lots of love and my thoughts are with you all. If you want to speak to someone who has been through it, my mum is really lovely and i can get her to give you a call one day. Let me know if you would like this and ill arrange it for you.

xxxxxxxxxx

Thank you ledkr for sharing your story. Well done for being a fab mum to your son, and well done to that cleaner who helped you out.

When I was on the PN ward one morning the midwife walked in my room and found me practically howling with tears streaming everywhere. She just came over to me and without any words gave me a giant hug. She must have been busy, but she just held me for what felt like 5 minutes. That was all I needed to face another day.
