Hi, I have a little boy of 2.5 and we have just today had our first speech and language referral appointment as he is not saying many words yet. I thought maybe other parents might be in the same position and would like to share experiences for support?

It took a few weeks for the appointment, which we were referred to by the health visitor. The therapist told us he has a moderate language delay and has given us ideas of some signs to use with him, she has advised us to keep language clear and simple and we will get a place at a toddler group run by speech and language therapists who will observe and support us. Not sure how long that will take as they only have 6 children in a group but there is an option we can go to the next town if necessary. He also had his hearing tested by the hospital audiologist last week and they said his hearing was fine.

Hi ladies

Just wanted to pop in and say hello. We had our first meeting with salt today - ds as predicted ignored them the whole time and just played with dh! She just took notes, gave us some recommendations to try 6 makaton signs to help communicate and introduce choice picture boards, she's going to send us a report with some understanding activities on also.

I left feeling really sad. I'm so torn about my ds, his speech has regressed and he's making no progress but he loves playing with other kids (albeit on the periphery as he can't communicate with them) he drags you to play with him and make interact, he physically directs you to everything and shows a range of emotions (copying your expressions) he loves to dance to music and loves watching you speak words and pronounce them he just can't get them himself! he understands simple instructions, but there is every chance there is an underlying issue there that i don't want to accept. He too loves cause and effect toys too!

I've asked for a hearing check to be done as he's constantly pulling at his ears and drs always say they are red inside. I know he can hear but I don't know if he can hear himself iykwim. Anyway I'll let you know how we get on!

Lalmel - it is slow! Everyone keeps telling me he could just start speaking tomorrow or next week but it's been 4 months since we 'noticed' and nothing happening yet. I've been really lapse with my it takes two to talk work so going to pick that up again.
I'm looking at him now smiling and laughing at shrek, and just willing him to day a word. It is heartbreaking! Hope the salt referral doesn't take too long for you xx

Willow I completely agree, I'm having to battle to get ds help without a diagnosis and it's physically draining! Every bit of help needs forms, assessments and meetings! I'm so frustrated!

My identical twins girls are 4 (were 8 weeks early) and have a second assessment with salt tomo, a year after the first. We were poo pooed and told it "would come" the at the first appointment( nursery raised eyebrows at this), fobbed off again when i phoned in june at the end of their first year in nursery, and now have this appointment because i complained ti HV who has put a bomb under them.

They do speak, extensively to each other, but not undersatandably to anyone else when they they do this.

They can talk to us, form sentences etc, chat away really, but much of it is mis pronounced and hard to follow unless you knw them well.

They play normally, very sociable, very quick on the uptake about everything, just very poor language skills and very late in starting. They are improving but at current rate of improvemtn they will not be approaching the level of their peers by a country mile by the time they start school.

The nursery had an educational psychologist observe them, reported normal play etc, just the limited speech. She had attempted this week to pressure the SALT people prior to the this appointment, but they simply dont answer the phone.

Today the nursery gave me their little written assessment to take to the appointment. Its made me a bit sad. It said that the younger children play with them, but that the older ones they started with have moved on, simply becasue they cant speak as well as the others. It just made me sad.

They do seem to speak less at nursery than at home, but the staff have reported improvements this year. I also realise that they are being helpful by being a bit negative on the report in order to pressure SALT to intervene. Its just all a bit sad.

They are so on track with everything else that 4 year olds should be doing and so happy and content. its "just" the speech. As i said they they speak in sentences and everything and have wide vocabulary, and no gap in understanding. But they just cant be understood. How can they ever cope with school?

Hi mommies ,
My son is 27 months old . I am worried about him as he is not talking . Use very few words like dada ,mamma , milk etc....
He obeys our commands but when he is not able to express his needs there he will do head banging . When we take him outside he will roam around and like exploring around . He appears normal and joined play school where he interacts with other children . We took him to doctor and he diagnosed as autism . But when we took 2nd opinion from other pediatrician and child psychologist they told he is fine . I am really worried .... dont know what to do and decide ..... anyone gone thru similar situations plz help me....

Im so glad i found this. My 21 month old doesn't say one recognisable word. Maybe sometimes we hear dadda yeah but very rarely. He vavvkes a lot but just says nothing. We repeat words for him but he doesn't say anything. Nursery say they are not worried as he babbles and points but they start to do something if he is 2 and above .
