Sirius ~ cruel or cool?

I think I'm having some kind of reaction to old gentleman names ~ and my short list is getting more and more eclectic/potentially just plain odd.
One of the names I'm mulling around is Sirius. But is it completely cruel to use it ~ can it stand up on its own or are people only ever going to think of Harry Potter/Gary Oldman etc?

It's also the brightest star in the sky. Before Harry Potter, that's what I'd have thought.

I love it. Can't see what other children could possibly find teaseworthy about it.

But then we live in London and are used to a large diversity of names, where children (and adults ) seem very accepting of different names.

I think you should go for it as long as you can get DH to agree. I loved the old names and wanted Aubrey or Algenon but my DH wouldn't entertain either. Luckily for our marriage we had a DD on whose name we both agreed.

Pretty much the only frame of reference people will have for this name is Harry Potter and, for that reason, I'd say no.

'Sirius' it's gr8 really but the big prob with names I reckon is that we bestow them before we know the character/looks etc of the recipient! Also we cannot know what other parents are choosing hence teachers always have clusters of the same name cropping up. So avoid a name linked to a star/celeb/sportsperson if you want to minimise this. Many of us opt for the classics because they endure, have some positive connotations and often have lots of variants which can be chosen. Of course a middle name can always be used instead - when starting High School for example. Children seem to appreciate family names as this gives them a link to their identity. My daughter is Elizabeth (classic and my mother's middle name but she is known by one of the diminuitives) and Julia her great grandmother's name whose birthday she shares!

It makes me smile which can't be bad.

I do like it but I hear "serious". I think you'd be better off with a similar "-us" name like Silas, Remus, Albus, Atlas or Cassius.

I like Sirius I have to say but also love Saul as a compromise (sort of?) I think fortunatehamster is right, will people think of Harry P when your Sirius is older?

It does depend on the type of area you are in there are lots of commetns about being teased. My children school has a wide range of names from the traditional "Anna, Emily! to the "way out there" name and no-one gets teased!

Also I have actually spoken to real people who havent read Harry Potter, of course I think they are crazy but each to his own!

PerArduaAdNaueum....I know someone called Atlas....as it happens.....he seems to have come through ok. Bearing in mind that I actually work with people called Atlas, Prince and Harry Potter (yes really) I am still horrified by Sirius...

He was a cool character - but still. Think of the Reception playground Mums????!!!!! You'll feel a bit of a prat then!

Love it. Nothing wrong with literature inspired names I think... unless its Ophelia (no offence to those with DD's with that name...but didn't she kill herself? )

Mind you, Sirius has an unhappy (but valiant) end in HP...

Sounds to much like 'serious' to me lots of teasing maybe. But nice name though. I'd say when in doubt don't do it.

I like quite unusual names...but think this would be better as a middle name.

i love hp and i also love the name...you should just go for it. loads of people have suggested silas as an alternative but that makes me think of the da vinci code. whatever name you choose there will be people who do and dont like it and will remind someone of something. choose a name you love and who cares about anyone else!
