Sirius ~ cruel or cool?

I think I'm having some kind of reaction to old gentleman names ~ and my short list is getting more and more eclectic/potentially just plain odd.
One of the names I'm mulling around is Sirius. But is it completely cruel to use it ~ can it stand up on its own or are people only ever going to think of Harry Potter/Gary Oldman etc?

There was a woman on another board I used to go on who called her baby girl Bellatrix about the time the final book came out, Sirius was her boy choice. Whilst its not as bad as Bellatrix (v sorry Bellatrix's mum if you are reading this! ) its still a bit too 'fan boyish' I think sorry

chenge · 17/06/2010 21:57

i think its horrible, because he will be made fun off each time he introduces himself,,think of him when he starts school,,

SiriusStar · 17/06/2010 22:02

Love it (Obviously)- but maybe as a middle name.

brimfull · 17/06/2010 22:03

sounds sinister to me and I haven't read Harry Potter

rebeccaw · 17/06/2010 22:06

We have a dog who came with the name sirius & we tried, but couldn't make it work so now he is Monty - too many pitfalls & that was just a dog!

  • are you sirius?
  • you cannot be sirius ... etc etc

If you like it maybe use it as a middle name, then it can be a name at home & he can adopt it if he wants too.

Numberfour · 17/06/2010 22:18

Not a Good Idea.

Tryharder · 17/06/2010 22:28

Go for it. I wanted to call DS2 Sirius (am an unashamed massive HP fan) but DH wouldn't let me.

FellatioNelson · 17/06/2010 22:47

Um, is it actually a real name or did JK make it up? It will always remind people of HP but if it's a real name then never mind. If it's not then I'd steer clear TBH.

Tobermory · 17/06/2010 22:48

Cruel.
Very!

tootootired · 17/06/2010 22:56

Wikipedia:

Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky. With a visual apparent magnitude of −1.46, it is almost twice as bright as Canopus, the next brightest star. The name "Sirius" is derived from the Ancient Greek Seirios ("scorcher").

Great name.

CakeandRoses · 17/06/2010 23:12

It's a lovely name but too Harry Potterish. As far as I know it wasn't an actual name pre-HP, twas 'just' a star.

Best as a middle name.

bananalover · 17/06/2010 23:17

so what if it reminds people of hpotter?
every name reminds someone of something else.
think its a great name...when i saw the thread i thought 'where have i heard that name before?
got it mixed up with sirus from heroes. still, great name!

duck94 · 17/06/2010 23:31

It's beautiful. Dont listen to the naysayers - their children are probably called Henry or Harry.

Every time I read threads like this I remember the re-naming ceremony that we held for my poor sad step nephew so that he could shed the "beautiful unique" name that "he would make his own" that had made his primary school years miserable. He went on to Secondary school with a name he chose himself - which was a traditional "one in the school but not unless you're unlucky one in the class" name.

Remember, you are making a serious decision on behalf of someone else - someone who can't give informed consent. Don't be self indulgent - be a responsible adult.

happyland · 18/06/2010 07:01

I like it. And will it really make people think of HP in 6yrs time?

PenguinNZ · 18/06/2010 07:53

I like it, but I do think it could be asking for trouble, even if people forget HP (unlikely) isn't Sirius also know as the Dog Star?

Agree that Silas is a great alternative.

Curious to know your other 'eclectic/potentially just plain odd' names, I like unusual names.

OrigamiYoda · 18/06/2010 07:56

People will still think of Harry Potter in six years time its a Classic. Plus everyone will follow him around dinging this song

We have a Cyrus at our school and it happens to him as well.

OrigamiYoda · 18/06/2010 07:56

singing - must find glasses

misswisteria · 18/06/2010 08:24

Blimey ~ there's such a mixed reaction here. Obviously I don't want to submit my ds to bullying and relentless misery (!)~ that's why I posted the question, to get some feedback. I think it's a lovely, interesting name, which evokes lots of wonderful associations quite separate from Potter (I also read Starlight Barking a million times when I was little) ~ but might put it in as a middle name so he can use it if he likes it....

I love it. I think it would take quite a lot of confidence in the child to pull the name off though..

People will have forgotten the Harry Potter hype in a few years. We have a daughter whose name was used as the baddie in a kid's film and no one has ever mentioned this connection to us..

hattyyellow · 18/06/2010 08:57

Of course, had forgotten the star derivation..

I loved Starlight Barking..

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 18/06/2010 09:34

It's either a bright star or a company that makes irritating robots.

Songbiirdheartsfootball · 18/06/2010 09:42

Reminds me of sirus the virus from Con Air. And you can't deny that was a classic.

I actually do like it though.

slushy06 · 18/06/2010 10:34

I love it and for the record I put my dd name on here and was told she would get picked on by half the people, Ds choose it from hp as it happens.

10 months on it is a beautiful name and people always comment on it and ask where it came from what it means. I have had one maybe two people who change the subject when I say it but there children are called things like bill, jack so just different tastes. On the whole most people love it.

On here I was also told people would misspell it but dd unusual name gets no misspelling and ds common name is constantly misspelled. Ds common name is never commented on and if I had a third I would use a unusual name again. BTW I gave a very common second name for her to fall back on if she does not like the first.
