Hi Joymaker,

I couldn't believe it when I read your post -you were describing my own experience!

I had my DS in 2007: Gabriel James. Then after weeks of enduring people pronouncing his name as Gabrielle (especially at Drs!) we ended up calling him James from abouT the age of 3 months. Because of all the mispronunciations from birth I had never entirely settled on Gabriel. He is still officially Gabriel James, and I am just about to apply for his first passport and trying to decide whether to change his name officaiily by Deedpoll to James Gabriel, to make his life more straight forward.... (any

I say, stick to Gabriel!! I sometimes wish I had, although he is most definately a James now. It's a fab, strong and beautiful name - and I was a coward!

Although I like these names please don't let one person's mistake put you off. I do like the NN Gabe too. If you register your DS as Gabriel and find alot of people say Gabrielle instead I believe you can actually change your DS's name until he's 12 months old without a problem (ie not via Deed Poll). You may find it's a one off and it may never happen again. Check you drs has the correct spelling for your DS as you never know it may be spelt wrong rather than receptionist pronouncing it wrongly. Why should you have to rename your child because of one mistake. After all he may end up a 'Gabe' later and then there shouldn't be a problem.

Whatever you decide should be right for you and your DH and DS not rest of society!

Good luck with your decision xxx

Just randomly clicked on a 'favourite sites' thing in safari (which I usually don't use!) and found this old thread!

I now have an almost 9 month old Elias and I love the name more now than I did when he was a mere bump! Always get a good response from people too and lots of people NN him Eli too which I don't mind.

Anyway, how are you getting on with your not-so-little now Noah??

robincousins · 08/05/2011 16:11

I'm also a mum to a gabriel and ai love the name it suits him perfectly .he gets gabriel often enough when people don;t know him eg doctors , pharmacists etc , it irritated to begin with but now at 41/2 its's really not an issue . he is often called gabe never gay , gayboy etc and if it did happen at school i think it would be stamped down on pdq.
there is a little polish gabriel in his nursery whose name is pronounced gabrielle , i think it's the polish pronounciation which maybe why the receptionist pronounced it incorrectly. if not please do't let some one ignorant put you off a beautiful name. would it be possible to put gabriel known as gabe on his dr's registration to avoid any further confusion

of your other names i like noah but it's becoming increasingly popular
lorcan is ok
dylan is also nice
never heard of elias so really not sure but it feels pretty boring but like eli
dislike hugo

how about
raphael
ambrose

samuel

robincousins · 08/05/2011 16:14

lulupeg · 09/05/2011 11:23

Haha speakercorner, joymaker and I will be pleased!
