After being put off the name Gabriel by my doctors' receptionist (who announced him as Gabrielle over the tannoy please put these names in order of preference:

Hugo,Elias,Lorcan,Noah,Dylan,

Ooh, Hugo. I'd never heard of a baby being called Hugo before, but I met one recently and it struck me as a very sweet name.

Gabriel will probably just end up being called Gay at school.

I love Dylan so Dylan Francis would be my choice
Are you sure you won't use Gabriel? If you love it, will you regret it if you don't use it? I can't imagine most people would mispronounce it
My order of preference

1. Dylan Francis
2. Noah Francis
3. Elias Francis
4. Gabriel Francis
5. Lorcan Francis
6. Hugo Francis - I really do not like Hugo!!

From your list I only like Hugo. I dislike the others, especially Lorcan.

I know a Gabriel who gets Gabs for the nickname.

Most people do know how to pronounce Gabriel properly. That receptionist must be a bit dim, or else forgot her reading glasses that day.

I would stick with Gabriel, much the nicest name of the choices.

Gabriel is my favourite name, I want it for next DS due in Oct but DH won't have it- says it is a girls name and he will be called gay

I think he's being v immature- there are much worse things to be called- and is just plain wrong. So if your OH is happy with it, stick with Gabriel. It is simply beautiful.

I liked Gabriel too but DH was worried about DS being called Gay Boy at school

I love Gabriel, but also love Hugo, have a friend and his nickname is Hugs which would be super cute for a little one!

I think people can get carried away with thinking what people will change names to/pronounce them as. I have a friend called Nathaniel which I think is a lovely name but he has always by his friends been called Fanny! and is 32 now and it's still stuck!

Only one I don't like is Lorcan as it makes me think of the Orc's in Lord of the Rings

I like Gabriel and Hugo but not really any of the others, particularly not Lorcan.

I don't think you should let one person put you off - if you love the name, go for it anyway. Imagine all those girls called Siobhan who have to deal with people who've never matched the written with the heard version before - how many times they get called Sio-barn (happens).

DP and I both loved the name Gabriel instantly and equally passionately -understanding the potential difficulties including that which MamaLazarou and Ineedsomesleep have pointed out(We trouble shot it to death!)we dismissed the "what ifs" and (bravely) decided to go with it as we are not easily influenced by such things.

EVERYBODY we know says they love the name Gabriel, yet there seems to be very few Gabriels around generally aspiegal CharlieBoo shimmerysilverglitter thumbwitch hairymelons it is such a beautiful name. Sadly maybe Gabriel is one of those names that you love but sh/would never call your child (I think there is a thread on MNet with that theme).

The receptionist though was the straw that broke the camels back and now DP is completely against it so it's out i'm afraid.

DP loves Elias too,I'm still undecided though think I'm erring towards Elias or Noah -although this morning I was all for Hugo (and thought Hugs as a nickname for a little person as suggested by Lavitabella was very cute).

I wanted to have made the decision by today however I have a feeling i'm going to be taking it to the wire...

I love Lorcan it was on our list but just didn't go with our surname. Gabriel was also on our list but DH was worried about DS getting called gabby and he hated that.

I like Gabriel. If you like the name why are you letting yourself be put off by some idiot who cannot read properly?

Noah is the only other one on the list I like.

I have a Gabriel and I think it is a lovely name BUT he is called Gabrielle ALL THE FRIGGING TIME even by people who know he is a boy and obviously think I am mental enough to have called him a girl's name.

Also people assume he is a girl....not helped by the fact he looks like a bloody girl.

Can you tell this irritates me?
