I'd vote Elias then Dylan. Both great names. Hugo, Lorcan and Noah are really not to my taste at all, on the other hand. Quite like Gabriel- shame people are so silly and have put you off.

joymaker · 06/06/2010 23:35

IngridFletcher It is nice to hear from someone who has a Gabriel. I truely feel your pain I really cannot understand what is so hard about getting it right- it's not as if it is spelt any differently to it's pronunciation.

gingerkirsty · 06/06/2010 23:38

Honestly I think the vast majority of people would have no problem recognising and pronouncing Gabriel. If you both love the name I vote for sticking with it. FWIW I reckon it's lovely.

I like

  1. Hugo
  2. Noah
  3. Dylan
  4. Lorcan
(Gabriel would have come in here! Although met a Gabriel a long time ago and he was gorgeous!)
  1. Elias
mathanxiety · 07/06/2010 02:06

Gabriel first, but if you're too put off, then Lorcan and Hugo, follower a long way back by

Elias, Dylan and

Noah.

Please stick with Gabriel if you love it. There are not that many people ignorant enough to mispronounce it, and actually there are receptionists who go out of their way to liven up their days with a bit of mischievous alteration of names.

frakkit · 07/06/2010 05:42

With Francis:

Dylan
Hugo
Noah
Lorcan
Elias

Elias is nice but not with Francis IMO.

IngridFletcher · 07/06/2010 13:48

People get really defensive if you point out they can't read I find. I am now so used to him being called Gabrielle and 'she' that I just go along with it and let them think I dress my girl as a boy.

lulupeg · 07/06/2010 15:50

I'm totally biased as I absolutely love Elias and that is what we are calling our blue bundle (due in 7 weeks!). Totally adore the NN Eli too, gorgeous!

We haven't told anyone (non-cyber!) as we don't want to be put off - I think family and friends will love it when they hear it though. Out of your other names, I like Hugo, Noah, Lorcan, Gabriel in that order. They are all very nice to be honest but I think Elias is the best hehe!

Good luck picking, and good luck with the middle name too

diddl · 07/06/2010 16:32

Gabriel.
Dylan.

DastardlyandSmugly · 07/06/2010 16:54
  1. Gabriel
  2. Elias
  3. Dylan
  4. Hugo
  5. Noah
  6. Lorcan
joymaker · 07/06/2010 18:21

helenwombat just had a peak at your pic, your DS is so cute and looks just like a Gabriel/Elias/Noah as does mine

lulupeg How decisive are you!. All the best with the birth and everything.

IngridFletcher you haven't given your order of preference.

Dylan is out. DP says it is too popular even though lovely and I think he is right. I'm not sure how poular Noah is.

OP posts:
Psammead · 07/06/2010 18:26
  1. Noah
  2. Dylan
  3. Elias
  4. Hugo
  5. Lorcan
lulupeg · 07/06/2010 19:46

Haha, yes I know my own mind I guess! I decided at about 16 weeks. It took DH a few days to 'decide' too but he was then firmly on board! Our shortlist included Seth, Caleb, Ezra, Sebastian and Oscar (which doesn't go with our surname at all but was on there cos DH loved it).

Thanks for the good birth wishes... getting close but still feels far away right now especially as am the size of a barge already.

I think your DP is right re: Dylan - it's got very popular in the last few years. I think Noah is getting popular too and I fear that Elias may start is own trend in the next few years (although that's based on nothing more than my own preference and thinking it's an ace name).

Let us know what you decide!

MagalyZz · 07/06/2010 19:53
  1. Hugo - love this!
  2. Lorcan - lovely, good strong Irish name which is easy in the UK.
  1. Dylan - I quite like it, don't love it. It's perfectly OK but I wouldn't choose it myself. I know a lovely one though!
  1. Noah - just don't like it. Very bland
  2. Elias - not crazy about it. Not awful but just a bit .... meh
Phoenix · 07/06/2010 20:33

I only know one other Noah apart from my ds2. The other one goes to my ds1's pre school (I live in Yorkshire)

I love Noah and reading this thread has made me like Elias too

I think Noah Francis sounds great, mine is Noah Rhys

EleanorD · 08/06/2010 12:37

Hugo and Elias are my two faves. Of the remaining 3 my order is Noah, Lorcan then Dylan.

hobbgoblin · 08/06/2010 12:41

When doctors receptionists announce my dD's name they say "can miss.......................................... can miss [surname] come to Dr X's room please. And then the doctor says 'how do you say her name?' except for one lovely and intellectual, non judgemental and worldly wise doctor who always gets it spot on.

I wouldn't worry.

imahappycamper · 08/06/2010 13:04

Why be put off by one ignorant receptionist. If you like Gabriel stick with it. Should be OK round Christmas anyway.
I have a friend with a daughter Charis whose name sometimes gets mispronounced as Charis with a Ch but she has lived to tell the tale and at 23 it doesn't seem to have affected her personality.

joymaker · 09/06/2010 15:10

After more agonising Lorcan and Hugo are now out...lulupeg I shall let you all know what we decide.

Call me crazy, asking this question at the eleventh hour but if anyone has any other names they think we might like and that go with Francis as a second name(in light of the ones that were on our list) please feel free to suggest them.

OP posts:
lulupeg · 10/06/2010 16:41

Hi just saw this, and will try and think of a few other names for you, hope it's not too late now!

As well as the names I said from my shortlist above (all of which I think work with Francis) here are some other ideas: I love Isaac but am honouring my sister who wants that for her as-yet-unconceived son! (Her other favourite is Felix but don't think that goes well with Francis at all!). Also like Laurie, Levi, Lucas and really love Inigo but we know boys with these names hence we didn't have them on our list. Likewise, I like the name Jude but DH is a teacher and has bad memories of a naughty pupil with that name! I also really liked the name Rafferty but it was vetoed by DH!

So, with Francis, they would be:

Isaac Francis
Laurie Francis
Levi Francis
Lucas Francis
Inigo Francis
Jude Francis
Rafferty Francis

I really recommend having a browse on Nameberry site - they have some very interesting ideas on there - some quite far out but some very good combinations and unusual names nameberry.com/

Hope this helps and good luck with the final decision-making - look forward to hearing the final reveal!

hobbgoblin · 10/06/2010 17:56

I like Gervais but probs doesn't go with Fancis or to most people's taste. Also Egon, Igor, and Digby.

lidofabiro · 10/06/2010 18:24

Milo Francis
Elliot Francis
Daniel Francis
Evan Francis
Samuel Francis
Emil Francis
Luke Francis
Reuben Francis
John Francis
Henry Francis
Aidan Francis
Leo Francis

joymaker · 10/06/2010 23:01

lulupeg, hobbgoblin, lidofabiro thanks for all your further suggestions. I cannot resist I'm going to look on nameberry.com... and D-day is tomorrow
